Trust me I tried it... Then I gota Yamaha QY100 for playing the styles. There is also PC based softsynths that will work, and I have used them too. It gets involved and expensive if you want very high quality sounds. The Yamaha softsynth Xg is one I have used and it is fair quality.
I'm not an XG expert, but I know there is lots more sounds in XG than GM(only 128) so you would have to pick a sound that you want to use in GM to use instead of XG that is in the style. remember in a style there is MANY tracks ivolved, it is not the right hand voices we are talking about here, it is the drum tracks, and all other accomanyment tracks. (MIDI channels 9-16)
The problem is that the Yamaha styles use the XG bank/program change messages all through different sections of a style. There are programs that you can use to edit the styles.....but this is a lot of work i my opinion.
You really need a software or hardware synth that is XG to make all this right, unless you want to spend all your time programming instead of playing!
I do use touch screen, a second lower MIDI keyboard for chords, styles and an additional voices (2) for right hand and a 13 note pedal boarb for contol of LS functions (MANY!, like fill A,B,C,D, next section, previous sectionreaks etc.) I also use the buttons on the MIDI keyboard for lots of LS control functions like selecting right hand voices (solo presets), tempo, and song select.
