... The quickest way I've found to do this is to use the event editor, delete the second whole note and change the length of the first one to be 8 counts....

I usually use a key command to merge the two notes. To make it exactly 8 beats, I would stretch it out to 9 beats or whatever, then set the cycle locators to 8...
