Of course, "You Can't Fail Me Now" is the one that is mostly a Joe Henry song,
right?

RAITT'S SLIPSTREAM
Bonnie Raitt's "Slipstream" is due April 10. "Slipstream" is the 62-year-old
slide guitarist's first album since 2005's "Souls Alike" and will be the first
release on her own record label, Redwing Records. The 12-track album will
feature four songs recorded with producer Joe Henry and his musicians, which she
describes as experimental. The remainder of the album is self-produced with her
touring band. She says she's thrilled with the resulting eclectic mix of blues,
rock and soul that even includes a dash of reggae and Celtic sounds. She covers
Bob Dylan's "Million Miles" and "Standing in the Doorway," and Loudon Wainwright
III's "You Can't Fail Me Now" as well.

Heard this one recently and it is a keeper. Full band with just an
incredible lead guitar line but I don't know who the guitar player is
on the track. It sort of sounds like Dean Parks or maybe even James
Burton or Steve Crooper. The flowing guitar lead is start to finish on
the song.

It is an autobiographical song that starts with his parents ends up
right up to date in "The Here & The Now."

I'll be on Cayamo with LWIII and will try to find out who is in the
band on the disc. We scored front row tickets for the Loud & Rich show
on the last evening of the cruise. Last year Loud & Rich did a little
more than an hour together which for me was way better than the tour
where they played solo sets and then a few songs together at the end.

Richard Thompson is going to be playing with Buddy Miller Band that
will include Sara Watkins from Nickel Creek and Jim Lauderdale as
guests. Can't wait to hear that!

Sure wish I was on this Cayamo cruise, so many of my favorites there - LW,
Richard Thompson, Buddy Miller, Lyle Lovett

From No Depression today:

"It's great being on a ship where you can meet all of your idols walking down a
staircase and they can't get away from you," Lovett said. "You can meet Richard
Thompson on an elevator and get way closer to Loudon Wainwright than he wants
you to." He then goes on to tell a story where he met Chuck Berry on a
staircase, and is careful to point out that it wasn't on this particular ship.

Strangely enough I was just listening to a Robbie Williams CD "The Ego Has
Landed", which I bought well over 10 years ago and had never listened to. More
oddly I was looking through the CD booklet and noticed a song titled "Jesus In A
Camper Van" where the songwriting credits read "R. Williams/G. Chambers/L.
Wainwright III.

Checking out the included lyrics reveals the chorus to the song contains the
lines:

"Jesus in a camper van he said sorry to leave you
But I've done all I can
I suppose even the son of God gets it hard someday
Especially when he goes 'round
Saying I am the way"

A little googling revealed more. Apparently this album is derived from two
previous Williams' albums. "I've Been Expecting You" is the one that had
"Jesus In A Camper Van" on it and wikipedia has the following in the entry for
this album:

'In 1998, Williams was sued by Ludlow Publishing over the song "Jesus in a
Camper Van", because it lifted lyrics from the Loudon Wainwright III song "I Am
The Way", from his album Attempted Mustache. The lyric to "I Am the Way" is as
follows: "Every son of God has a little hard luck sometime, especially when he
goes around saying he's the way." The lyric to "Jesus in a Camper Van" in
question is: "Even the son of God gets it hard sometimes, especially when he
goes around saying, I am the way." Williams claimed that he had heard a young
man say the line whilst in rehab, and only found that it was a line from
Wainwright's song after he had already recorded it. Williams' agents called
Wainwright to notify him about this, but Wainwright had little say in the
matter; "I Am the Way" was a parody of the Woody Guthrie song "New York Town";
Ludlow Publishing owned the line's copyright. In 2002, Ludlow Publishing won the
lawsuit, receiving 25% of the income that "Jesus in a Camper Van" garnered, and
subsequently, the album was re-issued replacing "Jesus in a Camper Van" with
"It's Only Us".'

So it's not clear if Loudon benefited financially from any of this depending on
whether he still had any ownership; if so I'd guess he made more from this than
he does from any of his own albums as Williams' album sold several million
copies.

I understand that Loudon made nothing from the Robbie Williams
recording. The benefit went to the Guthrie estate.

Better than Robbie Williams getting it; he should have plenty. It is interesting
though. Attempted Mustache credits the song thusly: "I Am The Way (New York
Town)" - new title &lyrics by Loudon Wainwright III, based on "New York Town" -
music by Woody Guthrie. The Robbie Williams song uses the lyrics, not the
melody. And there is no credit to Guthrie on the Williams album, only to Loudon.
So why would the Guthrie estate get the royalies, I wonder? ----- Original

Loudon delivered again, on this year's Cayamo tour! Here's one of the
funnier plot-lines:

First concert - Loudon had recurring tuning trouble. (unusual, right?)
But noticeably, his guitar sported one of those newfangled clip-on tuners
for the first time. Didn't help.

Second concert - More tuning trouble, throughout. First incident: he
acknowledged the new tuner, scowling at it. Second incident: he said "get
outa here, you worthless piece of crap" and hurled it over his shoulder.
Third incident: he ran back and retrieved the tuner, caressing it lovingly
and saying "I'm sorry . come back."

Third concert (Loud and Rich) - More tuning trouble. This time, RT lent
Loudon his own (also clip-on, but fancier-looking) tuner. That one worked
like a charm, prompting Loudon to say, "Wow! Thanks for the gift, Rich!"

Special guests at both of Loudon's own solo concerts were: sister Sloan
Wainwright, who sang beautifully and won many new fans; and session musician
extraordinaire Greg Leisz, armed with dobro and accompanying on several of
the songs from recent Loudon albums on which he's appeared. [Greg was
actually all over the boat during the week, playing with everyone. Nice to
see such a humble and talented guy so prominently featured.]

I think there were a few other lwiii listers onboard, tho we never met up
- perhaps they too will weigh in re their own experiences . ? The Cayamo
cruise is a total joy/love-fest/walk down memory lane. An impressive number

To see the slideshow in full screen just hit the little flag icon
next to the back space button (was only allowed to use my little
point and shot camera for concerts):

http://photo.net/photodb/slideshow?folder_id=1026517

Buddy & Jim Lauderdale were recording a lot for their new
radio program on the Cayamo cruise. Lauderdale's Tai Chi
class was fantastic! He ended up doing it every morning
he was on the ship.

Each year I think it can't get any better than this and
then the next year it is better. Got to talk to Buddy,
Lucinda, Greg Leisz and Shannon McNally several times.
Artists were everywhere on the ship this time and everyone
was very respectful.

One night the passenger jam session was expanded to include
Sean Watkins, Willie Watson and Greg Leisz. An hour later
the circle was expanded again to include Buddy Miller and
Jim Lauderdale playing whatever they felt like doing at
3:00 am.

LWIII was so "on" each time he played it was incredible. The
Loud & Rich set was amazing! Too bad their tour together was
two solo sets and then a few songs together since they really
shine together for an hour or so.

2. 20/20 Vision and Walking Around Blind (Jimmy Martin song)
3. You Ain't Goin' Nowhere (Bob Dylan song)
4. A Heart Needs A Home
5. Animal Song (___ goes ___ ...)
6. Flypaper
7. Call The Boys (Springfields song)
8. At The End Of A Long Lonely Day (Marty Robbins song)
9. I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight
10. Smokey Joe's Cafe (Leiber/Stoller song)
11. Satisfied Mind

12. Don't Let Your Deal Go Down Blues (Charlie Poole song)

Some songs from last year's Loud & Rich on Cayamo are here:

P.S. Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale are starting a radio show on
XM radio and were recording on Cayamo 2012 so maybe some LWIII
will show up there.

What it doesn't specify is whether you get the chance at the extra track if

I agree - it's not a great way to treat dedicated fans, all of whom
(presumably) would love access to the "bonus" track. Really can't see
why all pre-orders couldn't be offered it, not just a "random"50
lucky ones.... Can't cost all that much to make available for
download, surely, and all subscribers are forced to create an account
with the vendor, which is a great sales advantage, I would have thought.

We saw Hot Lunch Apostles Thursday night.

Loudon was great - and seemed to have a great time performing.

Yes, the play was very "avant garde". Loudon was a primary character and we
enjoyed the experience.

Sloan Wainwright also was in the audience and we were able to speak briefly
with her before the show started.

I wondered why Loudon chose to participate in the project. After seeing
Loudon perform as a character well outside his comfort zone, his
participation made more sense.

Even if you are just thinking on the fence about going on Cayamo 2013
I'd do the pre-sale sign-up. It is going to sell out really fast.
They are doing one artist at a time to announce who is going to be on the ship
on Facebook.

Buddy Miller has been announced and Richard Thompson said he has
been asked and thinks he will say yes (from a No Depression

he'll be along.

Subject: Older Than My Old Man Now - A Premature Review
cakrmm
Send Email Send Email

I received this disc yesterday and here's a review after one listen.

CD comes in a cardboard sleeve, much like an old LP jacket albeit for a double
LP. Cardboard jacket is rather pain and simple, almost elegant. It's in black
and white with a nice contemplative cover photo. There's a 20 page booklet with
a sepia cover photo of LWII & LWIII from 1948. The booklet includes
track-by-track lyrics, personnel, and notes by Loudon.

(1) The Here & The Now. As Loudon explains this is a 3 /1/2 minute
autobiography complete with bvox by all 4 kids and 2 of the 3 moms. In truth a
very weak song and surely a weak way to open the album.

(2) In C. Loudon's been playing this one live for several years and if it's not
the classic I thought it was when I first heard it it's still quite good. This
version has Loudon on the piano accompanied only by cellos.

(3) Older Than My Old Man Now. Loudon gives a spoken intro to this song that
was written my LWII about LWI and LWIII's song is basically his version of his
father's words. Another song that won't rank among Loudon's best for me.

(4) Double Lifetime. A duet with Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Loudon's "foremost
musical father figure" as he puts it in the notes. Another lesser song.

(5) Date Line. Another minor song about the international date line somewhat
redeemed by nice accompaniment (banjo, accordion, sax, tuba).

(6) All In The Family. Unlike In C, I didn't like this one from the first time
I heard it and I still don't. It's as if Loudon knew he had to write a song for
the birth of his first grandchild - after all, that's what he does, write songs
about family members and family events, doesn't he? - but he couldn't think of
something really good so he ended up with this.

(7) My Meds. LW on vocals accompanied only by piano played by Paul Asaro so
it's a much more accomplished piano than In C. Loudon's notes mention that he
asked Tom Lehrer to join him on the song (although he declined) and it's very
much a Lehrer like song - clever and bouncy but ultimately a one trick pony.
The melody and some lyrics are retreads from other Loudon songs.

(8) Interlude. An instrumental (violin) interlude based on the last track on
the disc. Very pretty.

(9) Over The Hill. Loudon's only song co-written with Kate McGarrigle in 1975.
I can see why it took 37 years to record…

(10) Ghost Blues. Loudon looks back on life after he dies, not his life but the
life of the people he left now that he's not in the picture.

(11) I Remember Sex. A duet with Dame Edna Everage (Barry Humphries). A song
that needs to be set in a Broadway musical.

(12) Somebody Else. A duet with Chris Smither. Another one-track pony song
with 5 repetitive verses.

(13) The Days That We Die. A duet with Rufus that also features a Loudon spoken
intro of an LWII essay. One of the albums stronger songs.

(14) 10. A wistful song about wanting to be 10 years old again.

(15) Something's Out To Get Me. A re-write of The Back Nine, good but weaker
without the golf metaphor.

In summary, a mediocre album for the ol' Loudo. The songs are pretty weak, too
many insubstantial songs, too little insight. I confess to liking the more
serious Loudon especially on records. The humor is great and some insubstantial
songs are fine when performed in concert. But this album lacks any song I'd put
on a best of compilation to win over a new fan. Too much that he's said before
in far better songs.

Won't stop me from going to see him next month though!

Thanks for the review Al, I respect everything you say about Loudo, major
disappointment by the sounds of things.

I received this disc yesterday and here's a review after one listen.

CD comes in a cardboard sleeve, much like an old LP jacket albeit for a
double LP. Cardboard jacket is rather pain and simple, almost elegant.
It's in black and white with a nice contemplative cover photo. There's a 20
page booklet with a sepia cover photo of LWII & LWIII from 1948. The
booklet includes track-by-track lyrics, personnel, and notes by Loudon.

(1) The Here & The Now. As Loudon explains this is a 3 /1/2 minute
autobiography complete with bvox by all 4 kids and 2 of the 3 moms. In
truth a very weak song and surely a weak way to open the album.

(2) In C. Loudon's been playing this one live for several years and if it's
not the classic I thought it was when I first heard it it's still quite
good. This version has Loudon on the piano accompanied only by cellos.

(3) Older Than My Old Man Now. Loudon gives a spoken intro to this song
that was written my LWII about LWI and LWIII's song is basically his version
of his father's words. Another song that won't rank among Loudon's best for
me.

(4) Double Lifetime. A duet with Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Loudon's "foremost
musical father figure" as he puts it in the notes. Another lesser song.
