As the rest of the Philippine islands have found out, the sound of Cebu is more than Urbandub and Sheila and the Insects, independent artists who have taken Manila by storm in the past couple of years. Theres Smooth Friction, The Ambassadors, Happy Days, Cattski, and the list goes on. One must definitely wonder what these guys have for breakfast as they are able to churn out excellent music that challenges the trend, initially concocted for their personal consumption while (accidentally?) finding its way into the consciousness of the extremely fickle listening public. Just when you thought these bands have it made, out comes Love Satellites, another testament to the musical diversity the queen island of the south has to offer.
Formerly known as Salad Days, this post new-wave shoegaze outfit composed of Eimer(drums), Dwight(vocals), Joy(bass), and Roger(guitars) have proven their mettle playing for different respected new wave bands in the circuit for years. With the onset of practical realities and the rise of rapmetal in the late 90s, the pioneering new wave acts have either gone or faded in obscurity, including Salad Days, who are left with Eimer and Dwight as the original members. They hooked up with Roger, who was playing with DRockers, one of the perpetuators of the new wave scene in Cebu, and Joy, who was with another new wave outfit, Babygram. Rounding up the new group was their original vocalist, Mark [Taladua].
They then decided to change their name. Different names were thrown, and the name Love Tunnels and Satellites stuck. Dwight explains that there was this rumor about an underground tunnel deep in the Vatican where priests would meet with the members of the opposite s*x from the clergy. It was called the love tunnels, and it sounded interesting. We just added satellites for kicks. Eventually, the bands name was shortened to Love Satellites, and it stayed with them since.
They recorded their first single, Ode to Us.
