Um Kalthoum had the musicality of Ella Fitzgerald, the public presence of
Eleanor Roosevelt, and the audience of Elvis Presley. She rose from humble
beginnings to become the most popular singer in the history of the Middle
East--and she did it all while living under the strictures of a traditional
Islamic
state. She became a symbol for Egypt as the country shook off colonialism and
confronted modernity, but was also able to transcend national boundaries
through her art. Four million people attended her funeral in Cairo in 1975, and
to this day her cassettes outsell every other Arabic female vocalist.
Voice of Egypt: Um Kalthoum explores the amazing life and turbulent times of
this extraordinary woman and features choreography by Cassandra Shore,
writing and direction by Pamela Nice, dance by the members of Jawaahir Dance
Company, visual elements by Hend al-Mansour, and music by the Georges
Lammam Ensemble.
