Dan Rein will perform traditional Persian music on the Setar, a four string
long neck lute from Iran. The setar is considered Iran most intimate and
mystical instrument. The music performed will be improvisations drawn from
the Persian radif, which is a body approximately three hundred melodies,
divided into twelve modes called Dastgahs. These melodies have been handed
down from master to student.
Dan Rein has studied Iranian music with masters in the United States,
Canada, and Iran. He has performed an taught at numerous venues throughout
the Twin Cities. In 1994 he received the Jerome Foundation Travel Grant to
study with master musicians in Iran. He is also the host of "Century Song"
on KFAI Radio, that features music, interviews, and concerts of traditional
forms of music from around the world.
