These special performances are in conjunction with a weeklong intensive workshop
for dance students from across the US and Canada.
On Friday March 18, guest artists Monique and Kristin will join Cassandra and
Jawaahir in an evening of Middle Eastern dance solos and special pieces from The
Company's diverse repertoire. Jawaahir's traditional dances bring to life the
indigenous rhythms, distinctive costumes, and expressive dance traditions
of Egypt,Lebanon,Tunisia, and the Saudi Gulf. Their contemporary pieces are an
exciting fusion of East meets West and Cassandra's theatrical flair! Sometimes
serious
and sometimes campy, Jawaahir's contemporary pieces expand traditional
perceptions of Middle Eastern dance.
On Saturday March 19, Cassandra, Aliyah, Zulaika, andTarawill perform classical
Danse Orientale with the Twin Cities' powerhouse Arabic dance band, Layalli
Sharque.

Noted choreographer and dancer Cassandra Shore founded Jawaahir (Ja-WAA-heer)
Dance Company in 1989. Jawaahir is dedicated to bringing the rich artistic
heritage of
the Middle East to the theater stage, presenting a visual feast of contemporary,
traditional, theatrical and the diverse styles of folkloric dance.
