installment of her culinary journey across the vast and diverse Indian
subcontinent.
For the past five years, Ragamala’s “Al’s Dinners” have provided an
informal atmosphere in which our audiences and friends can dine on fabulous
Indian food, chat with Ragamala dancers and, for only $12, offer vital support
that goes a long way toward making Ragamala’s exciting and innovative work

Ragamala presents its most popular touring production for its home audience!
From Temple to Theater takes audiences on a journey through time, illustrating
the journey of the South Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam from the
ancient temples of South India to the theaters of today.
From Temple to Theater highlights excerpts from Ragamala’s classical and
contemporary repertoire, and features several premieres, including
collaborations with Carnatic (South Indian classical) vocalist Nirmala
Rajasekar, vocalist Charmin Michelle, and Japanese taiko drumming ensemble Mu
Daiko.

Following solo performances in India, Aparna Ramaswamy will present an
evening-length classical program featuring the choreography of her teacher, the
internationally renowned Ms. Alarmel Valli of Chennai, India. Aparna will be
joined by Ranee Ramaswamy, members of the Ragamala company, and dancers from the
Ragamala School.

An encore performance of Artistic Director/Choreographer Ranee Ramaswamy's
critically acclaimed collaboration with Deaf actor Nicole Zapko. The Transposed
Heads brings together abhinaya—the ancient language of gesture and expression
in South Indian classical dance—and American Sign Language (ASL) to tell the
ancient Indian tale that inspired Thomas Mann’s novella of the same name,
adapted for the stage by playwright/Director Zaraawar Mistry. Narrated in
English and accompanied by an evocative, original score, The Transposed Heads is
geared toward both Deaf and hearing audiences.

An encore production of Ragamala's overwhelmingly acclaimed global collaborative
work,
Ragamala Artistic Director Ranee Ramaswamy joins forces with Bali-based master
artist I Dewa Putu Berata to bring together Bharatanatyam and Kecak, the
powerful vocal tradition of Bali, in a stunning presentation of the Indian epic
Ramayana. The premiere of Sethu in September of 2004, commissioned and
co-presented by Walker Art Center, drew an audience of over 5,500 to the
Minneapolis Sculpture Garden!
