Summer Institute will present a focused approach to the
study and interpretation of Middle Eastern music.

The four-day/three night workshop will include a wide
variety of activities for participants. Drawn from the expertise
of the University of Chicago's Department of Music, CMES,
and several other guest professional musicians, workshop
participants will explore both lecture and practical material
to enrich the classroom experience, including :
· Maqamat (Modal Structures)
· Iqa'at (Rhythmic and Modal Structures)
· Form and Genre (Levantine, Iranian, North African and Balkan
contexts
· Middle Eastern Music Teaching Resources (online and elsewhere)
· Music in the Middle East (media, social, and religious life)
· Practical repertoire workshops
We have also prepared many cultural events to further
acclimatize and acculturate our institute members.
Included is dinner at a local Middle Eastern restaurant,
and an evening of Middle Eastern cinema (with subtitles).
The Institute will conclude with a public concert involving
Institute participants and visiting musicians.
