Cassandra & Jawaahir welcome guest artist Amel Tafsout for an exciting
exploration of the Berber roots of North African music and dance. The
term al-Andalus refers to a period in history when three religious
groups (Moslem, Christian, & Jewish) interacted positively with each
other.Roots of al-Andalus will present a timeline of mystical ancient
Berber movements that connect to the contemporary work of both Ms.
Tafsout and Ms. Shore. Moroccan and North African musicians will
supply the unique syncopated rhythms for the earthy tribal dances of
the Algerian Ouled Nail, Tunisian women's water pot balancing
dance, and `Alloui "Horse dance", as well as sophisticated
classical Andalusian court melodies on the `oud (Arabic lute) and nay
(Arabic reed flute), and kemenje (Arabic violin). We'll rock the house
with Rai music and dance, and spectacular performances from Ms.
Tafsout and Cassandra.
