ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
V.K. Raman, one of the leading flutists in Carnatic music, began learning the
flute at the age of nine and started giving full-fledged concerts at the age of
fifteen. In addition to giving solo performances in many prestigious
organizations in India and abroad, Raman has had the privilege of performing
flute duets along with his guru, the great flute maestro, Dr. N. Ramani, on
several occasions. Raman has also been quite successful as a composer. He has
scored music for many audio and video albums and has released 35 CDs through
various labels worldwide. He has captivated audiences in a number of India's
major music festivals and toured widely in USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Belgium,
France, Germany, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, and Japan.
Nandkishor Muley was born in the Western Indian town of Baroda. He comes from a
long lineage of musicians. He studied for years under Pundit Shivkumar Sharma,
who innovated the Santoor by altering the number of strings one plays; Pandit
Muley has also modified his instrument. His handmade Santoor has a tonal range
extending over three octaves; the 100 strings play 34 notes. Today, Nandkishor
continues to be one of the top ambassadors of the santoor.
Ravi Shankar started his concert career at the age of ten. He is a disciple of
mridangam maestro Karaikudi R Mani. An 'A' grade artist of the All India Radio,
Ravi Shankar has had several concert tours and has accompanied great musicians
like M.S. Goplalakrishnan, T.N. Krishnan, Dr. N. Ramani, and others. Ravi
Shankar has released several CDs and also runs a percussion ensemble "Nada Laya
Lahari." He has received many awards and scholarships from the Government of
India and topped the Vidwath examination conducted by the Karnataka Government.
Aditya Kalyanpur is noted for his bold and clear execution of syllables,
pinpoint precision in rhythm and cross rhythm and, finally, a colossal
repertoire of compositions and improvisational techniques. These qualities make
Aditya Kalyanpur's concerts a joy for both the layman and the connoisseur. Under
the keen tutelage of late Ustad Allarakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain, Aditya has
developed a style that is distinguished for fine sense of rhythm, versatility,
and eloquence.
