The Indian Music Society of Minnesota (IMSOM) is proud to announce the next
concert in our 2005 Fall Concert Series: a stunning Hindustani instrumental
recital by Rajeev Taranath, one of the world's leading exponents of the Sarod
and a distinguished disciple of maestro Ali Akbar Khan. Accompanying him will
be the dynamic young artist, Abhiman Kaushal, on the Tabla. Pandit Taranath's
brilliant artistry and soulful improvisations are sure to leave even the most

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Rajeev Taranath is one of the world's leading exponents of the sarod. A
distinguished disciple of Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, his performances masterfully
combine the depth and rigor of the tradition of Hindustani classical music with
an inspired imagination and emotional intensity. Hailed a prodigy in Hindustani
vocal music, he received his early training from his father and other eminent
musicians and was a concert and radio artist by the age of twenty. Rajeev has
also received guidance from Pandit Ravi Shankar and Shrimati Annapurna Devi.
Rajeev Taranath's distinctive musicianship demonstrates striking imaginative
power, technical excellence and emotional range. Rajeev has toured extensively
as a performer in India, Australia, Europe,Yemen and throughout the U.S. He has
also composed music for several nationally and internationally honored Indian
films. He is the recipient of the Indian Government's highest award in the
arts, the Sangeet Natak Academy Award for 1999-2000, given in recognition of
outstanding achievement in the field of Hindustani Instrumental music. He
received the prestigious national, 'Chowdiah Award' for excellence in the field
of instrumental music In 1998, Sangeet Nritya Akademi Award in 1993 and the
Karnataka Rajya Prashasti in 1996 from the Government of Karnataka in India.
Rajeev was a Ford Foundation scholar (1989 to 1992) and researched on the
Teaching Techniques of the Maihar-Allauddin Gharana during this period. He is
currently a faculty member in the Indian Music department at the
California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, California and divides his time
between teaching and performing.
Abhiman Kaushal is an outstanding tabla artist, well known for his rich tone and
clarity in performance. He belongs to the Farukkabad, Lucknow and Ajrara
schools of tabla. Kaushal was initiated in this art at a young age by his
father, Sri R. B. Kaushal, a disciple of the legendary Ustad Amir Hussain Khan.
He also trained under Ustad Sheikh Dawood and Pandit B. Nandkumar in Hyderabad.
Kaushal has performed at major international venues in England, Germany, Italy,
Norway, Belgium, France, Israel, Japan, Mexico, United States, and India, with
leading musicians such as Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pt. Hari Prasad
Chaurasia, Pt. Jasraj, Ustad Shujaat Hussain, and Smt. Lakshmi Shankar. He has
numerous recordings including Ravi Shankar in Venice, Farewell My Friend (with
Ravi Shankar), and Passages (with Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass). National
Geographic has recorded his tabla for the soundtrack to their documentary "Man
Eaters of North India." Kaushal has also recorded for
various world music compilations.
