ABOUT THE ARADHANA:
The Twin-Cities Aradhana has been a fixture of the community's arts calendar
since 1995. Modeled after the tradition of Thyagaraja Aradhana, performed
annually in Thiruvayyar, India, Aradhana 2005's main purpose is to celebrate the
works of, and pay tribute to, Purandaradasa (considered the father of Carnatic
music), the trinity of Carnatic music (Saint Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar,
and Shyama Shastri), and other great composers, by rendering their select
compositions.
This is a rare opportunity to see and hear Carnatic music as a chorus
presentation. (Carnatic music is almost always performed solo). The performers
in this community concert (made up of both professionals and amateurs) will be
led by Twin-Cities professional vocalists. The program will be organized as a
community event in a festive atmosphere with attendance and participation from
adults and children alike.
ABOUT THE GUEST ARTISTS:
Maharajapuram Srinivasan (Vocal) is a disciple of both his grandfather,
Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri Viswanatha Iyer, and his father, Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri
Maharajapuram Santhanam, and has imbibed their rich musical heritage. He has
had solo performances throughout India in leading sabhas since 1986. He is also
a regular performer on Doordarshan and AIR as an ‘A’ grade artiste. Srinivasan
has accompanied his father in concerts both in India and abroad. Endowed with a
fine feeling for melody, Sri Srinivasan deftly combines the lakshana and lakshya
styles handed down to him by his ancestors. He is the recipient of many awards
including the Asthana Vidwan of Vysaraya Mutt, Tumkur (Bangalore) and Asthana
Vidwan of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. He was awarded Simha Dwani Samrat by
Pujya Sri Swamiji of the Vysaraya Mutth, best vocalist in the sub-senior
category from the Music Academy in 2000 and has received rave reviews from
senior music critics. Sri Maharajapuram Srinivasan is the
trustee of the Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer Trust and the Maharajapuram
Santhanam Foundation, two institutions dedicated to promoting classical music.
His son, M. S. Ganesh Viswanathan, a child prodigy who has already won many
accolades, will provide back-up vocals during this concert.
Kallidaikurichi S. Sivakumar (Mridangam) hails from a musical family. His
parents and grandparents, devotees of Lord Muruga, have specialized in rendering
the Tiruppugazh of Arunagirinathar Swamigal, which occupies a prominent place in
the chapter of Tamil devotional compositions. Siva Kumar developed an interest
in laya (rhythm) at an early age. When he was seven he began learning the art of
playing the mridangam from Vaitheerswaran Koil Sri.S.Vaidyanathan and, at the
age of sixteen, began accompanying his guru during concerts. Later he also
perfected his art under the tutelage of mridangam maestro, the veteran Padmasri
Palghat R. Raghu. Sivakumar has played in reputed organizations all over India.
He has also toured Singapore, USA, Canada and Europe, accompanying senior
artists like Chitravina N. Ravikiran and Smt. Charumathi Ramachandran, Sikil
Sisters, Malladi Brothers, and Vijay Siva.
R. Sathish Kumar (Violin) is a disciple of Violin Maestro Sangeetha Kalanidhi
Sri.M.S. Gopalakrishnan. He stepped onto the concert platform at the age of
eight and has performed over 500 concerts throughout India, accompanying leading
vocalists like Mandolin Srinivas, T.V. Gopalakrishnan, Nithyashree Mahadevan and
Sudha Raghunathan. Intense training from Vidwan Sri Palghat T.R.Rajaram has
familiarized Sathish Kumar with the subtle nuances in vocal music and helped him
as an accompanist at vocal concerts. He is also a grade “A” artiste of AIR and
Doordarshan. He was the winner of a National competition held by AIR – Chennai
in 1998 and was awarded a direct graduation by the Music Audition Board.
Sathish Kumar has received a number of awards, including those from
Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer trust, Navras Recording Company-London, Sri
Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, and Mylapore Fine Arts Club
for the December Music Festivals.
