The Heartland Seminars on Arab Music & Dance (www.heartlandseminar.com) offer a
week-long residential program focusing on classical Arab music and dance. The
music portion of the seminar (March 19-23) is designed both for people who wish
to
begin their study as well as those who seek to improve their skills; the weekend
dance segment preceding the music seminar (March 17-19) is intended for
experienced dancers and will present a variety of cultural dance forms of the
region.
The Heartland Seminars feature internationally-recognized academics and
performers
who will offer individualized instruction, ensembles, lectures, and workshops.
The
music instructors are: Hanna Khoury (violin), Kareem Roustom (?ud), Dr. Scott
Marcus
(ney), Naser Musa (vocals), Hicham Chami (qanun), and Karim Nagi Mohammed
(percussion). Karim will be joined by Nourhan Sharif, Amel Tafsout, and Kay
Hardy
Campbell for the dance seminar. All instructors have extensive background in
education in addition to being recording artists and performers.
The Heartland Seminars are sponsored by Xauen Music (www.xauen-music.com), a
Chicago-based organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of classical
Arabic,
Turkish, Armenian, and Sephardic music. Xauen Music promotes concerts,
publishes
a magazine, conducts educational workshops, and produces recordings.
The location is Lake Lawn in Delavan, Wisconsin--90 minutes from Chicago and an
hour from Milwaukee and Madison (eight miles west of Lake Geneva). The cost for
instruction plus meals/lodging (double occupancy) is $549 for the music seminar
and
$439 for the dance seminar, or $950 for the entire week. Single rooms are
available
at an additional cost.
