Eleventh Annual Arabic Music Retreat
August 11-18, 2007
Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA
The Arab American Arts Institute is pleased to announce the Eleventh Annual
Arabic Music Retreat, to be held from August 11-18, 2007 at the beautiful
rural campus of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
Led by Artistic and Executive Director Simon Shaheen
and Associate Director Dr. A.J. Racy, the faculty includes:
Simon Shaheen - Violin and `Ud Performance
Dr. A.J. Racy - Nay and Buzuq Performance
Sakher Hattar - 'Ud Performance
Bassam Saba - 'Ud and Nay Performance
Rima Khcheich - Vocal Performance
Michel Merhej - Percussion Performance
Najib Shaheen - Chamber Music
William Shaheen - 'Ud Performance
Jamal Sinno - Qanun Performance
Dr. Iman Roushdy - Arabic Vocal Diction
Karim Nagi - Percussion Performance
The Retreat's week-long intensive program exposes participants to maqam
theory, principles of improvisation, ethnomusicology topics, as well as new
repertoire and performance skills. All participants receive private instruction
in
a primary instrument, are assigned to play in a small coached ensemble, and
play in the large Retreat Ensemble. A final concert by participants and
faculty on August 17th caps the week's activities.
