Description:

Learn advanced concepts and techniques of North Indian Classical
Music
from a master artist and scholar. Continuing from "Introduction to
North Indian Vocal Music" (offered in Fall 2007), learn advanced
vocal training in North Indian music. Gain a panoramic view of Indian
music, its meaning and place and a greater understanding of the
diversity and possibilities of human expression. Learn advanced voice
culture and compositions in Hindustani music through hands on vocal
lessons and exercises, audio/video material, concert experience,
classroom discussions, guest lectures and writing assignments. This
is a
fascinating course and a unique opportunity for anyone interested in
music, aesthetics or Indian culture.

In this course, you will also explore some of the many varieties of
music in today's India and discuss the cultural, social and
historical processes that contribute(d) to this musical diversity. In
this process we will direct our attention to dialogues of music and
meaning within and beyond India. The course will begin with an
overview
of the main elements of Indian Music, then discuss how these elements
are used in North Indian Classical Music, Popular Music and Folk
Music,
ending with a discussion of music's role in Indian culture and
society, with emphasis on social organization, gender and religion.

Prerequisite: MUS 5950 Offered Fall 2007 or by prior permission from
the
instructor.

Course Content:

Musical Building Blocks: Raga, Tala, Instruments

Advanced Vocal Training: Khyal, Tarana, Chaturang, Dadra, Geet

Classical Traditions in India: Current and obsolete forms of
Hindustani
Music and Carnatic Music

Musical Dialogues: Classical, Folk and Film Music. Popular and Fusion
Music. Music, society and culture. Social Organization in Hindustani
Music. Music and Women. Music and Religion.

Class Time: 50% singing, 15% guest speakers (lecture-demonstrations),
20% lecture, 15% discussion

Work Load: 10 pages reading per week, 15 pages writing per term, 1
exam,
2 papers, 3 quizzes.

Grade: 30% final exam, 25% reports/papers, 15% quizzes, 15% class
participation, 15% attendance

Final exam will involve vocal performance. Grade options:
A-F, S/N, Audit.

Exam Format: Multiple choice and short answers (2-3 sentences).
