Vernacular Music of South Asia , A-F only , 3 credits,

This course explores some of the rich musical traditions of South Asia
that lie outside of the "classical" canon. Genres and styles discussed
include bhajan, Bollywood film song, bhangra, kirtan, Baul song, music
of indigenous peoples, folk music from Rajasthan, and more. While the
bulk of the course will be spent listening to and reading about musics
from India, we will also address musics from Pakistan, Nepal, and
Afghanistan. Each musical style will be discussed in its unique
socio-cultural milieu, as well as within wider political, economic,
stylistic, and cultural continuities.
