"Introduction to North Indian Vocal Music"

3 credits, 5:00 - 6:30 P.M., Tue & Thu (09/02/08 - 12/10/08), Ferguson

Brief description:

This course in elementary Hindustani (North Indian) vocal music exposes
the student to the foundational concepts of raga and tala in historical
and cultural context, through hands on vocal lessons and exercises,
audio/video material, concert experience, classroom discussions and
writing assignments. My effort will be geared towards teaching the
rudiments of Indian classical music using voice as the principal
instrument. Through this course I will attempt to convey the essence of
one of the most ancient and complex musical systems of the world. This
course aims at turning the learners' eyes and ears to the source of true
enjoyment and understanding of the fantastic heritage of North Indian

Class Time: 30% lecture, 20% discussion, 50% singing

Work Load: ~10 pages of reading per week, 15-20 pages of writing per
semester, 2 paper(s), 3 written quizzes and one vocal quiz

The University of Minnesota's School of Music will once again be
offering a course in North Indian Music in Fall 2008. Many thanks to
Late Prof. Mirjana Lausevic, Prof. Kelly Harness, Prof. Anna Schultz and
Prof. Noel Zahler (Ex-Director) at the School of Music, for making this
possible.

The course will be taught by Dr. Pooja Goswami, master vocalist visiting
from Delhi (see instructor bio below).

"Introduction to North Indian Vocal Music" is a one-semester course in
Hindustani vocal music for beginners, that also includes elements of
history, culture and theory as appropriate. The course is now listed on

Registration is limited to 20 seats for Fall 2008. Course number is

No prerequisites are necessary for the course except the ability to
carry a tune and keep a steady rhythm.

This is a detailed description of the course:

Learn the cornerstones of North Indian Classical Music from a master
artist. Along with lectures and readings in the history and theory of
Hindustani music, students will also learn rudimentary exercises in
singing and spoken rhythms.

This course examines the classical music of Northern India in
relationship to Indian culture and history.

Students will learn the tenets of voice culture and foundational
concepts of rhythmic practice in Hindustani music through intensive
listening and hands-on practical exercises. These musical fundamentals
will be contextualized through a study of their relationship to
aesthetic and philosophical concepts, cultural practices and historical
developments in the region. Through this combination of practical
training and academic study in India's unique brand of
musicology/ethnomusicology, students should gain new perspectives on
music, its meaning and place, and a greater understanding of the
diversity and possibilities of human expression.

Prerequisites:

This course has no specific prerequisites. However, prospective students
will be expected to exhibit an appropriate level of musical aptitude.
The ability to carry a tune and keep steady rhythm is necessary.

Grading Option: A-F
3 credits (= 3 hrs per week)

Expected enrollment: 20 (~ 40% undergraduate, 60% graduate)
The course is intended for both majors and non-majors.

Graduate students enrolled in this class will be expected to produce a
15 page final research paper in addition to the coursework expected from
the rest of the students.

Course Outline:

I. VOICE CULTURE IN HINDUSTANI MUSIC

1. Musical voice and its cultivation
2. Vowel equalization
3. Foundation notes
4. Exercises for flexibility of voice (Sargam and Alankar)
5. Exercises of yoga and morning practice

II. RAGA: THE MELODIC FRAMEWORK

1. The musical alphabet: notes, their combinations, Shrutis (microtones)
2. Introduction to the Khayal: the principal vocal genre in Hindustani
music
3. Study of Khayal compositions in basic Ragas: Yaman, Bhairav,
Bhairavi, Bhoop, Kafi
4. Treatment of the Raga in various genres:classical, semi-classical,
folk and light-music

III. TALA: THE RHYTHMIC FRAMEWORK

1. The foundations of the Hindustani rhythm system
2. Study of basic Talas: Teentaal, Ektaal, Jhaptaal, Dadra, Keharwa etc.
3. Treatment of the Tala in classical, semi-classical, folk and
light-music
4. Introduction to compositions of rhythm: Kayda, Tihaai, Tukda in
Teentaal

All of the above will involve a significant amount of listening to music
- live in class, on audio/video recordings and via the Internet.

IV. LISTENING TO INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC

1. Typical concert format of vocal music (Khayal)
2. Typical concert format of instrumental music (Sitar/Tabla)
3. Listening assignments
4. Concert attendance assignments
5. Live demonstrations in class when possible

Text Book:

Sharma, Swatantra, Fundamentals of Indian Music, Pratibha Prakashan,
29/5 Shakti Nagar, Delhi, India, 1996. The instructor will provide
copies
of this textbook for a nominal fee.

Evaluation of student achievement:
There will be periodic quizzes on the lecture material and readings.
Students will also be given exercises in singing and spoken rhythms,
which they will be expected to practice daily. They will perform these
assignments in every class. The final will consist of a written portion,
based on the lectures and readings, and a performed portion, drawn from
the daily exercises.

About the instructor:

Pooja Goswami, Ph.D. (Music)

Dr. Pooja Goswami was born in a musical family and received her early
training in Hindustani (North Indian) classical music (vocal) from her
father Sri. Surendra Goswami.

She received her M.Phil from the University of Delhi and completed a
Ph.D. in Music in 2005, also from the University of Delhi. The subject
of her Ph.D. thesis was the life and music of Pandit Amarnath, the
foremost disciple of Ustad Amir Khan - an icon in Hindustani vocal
music.

Dr. Goswami is also trained in semi-classical music from the eminent
vocalist Smt. Shanti Hiranand, the reigning queen of Thumri and Ghazal
(semi-classical vocal genres) and the universally acclaimed successor of
the legendary vocalist, the Late Begum Akhtar. The versatility in Dr.
Goswami's repertoire is evident in her ability to sing Thumri,
Dadra, Ghazal, Bhajan and various folk genres (e.g. Chaiti, Kajri)
besides Khayals.

Dr. Goswami has received the prestigious National Scholarship awarded by
the Ministry of Human Resources. The many prestigious venues she has
performed at include the India Habitat Center (New Delhi), the Sopan
festival (New Delhi), Vietnam International Tourism Festival (Hanoi) and
the Sankalp music society (Jaipur). Dr. Goswami recently co-composed the
score for Pangea World Theater's "The Partition Project"
staged in June 2006 in Minneapolis. She has performed widely within the
USA, including performances at the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis
(MN), Indian Music Society of Minnesota (IMSOM) - Minneapolis (MN),
Amherst College - Amherst (MA), East Indian Music Academy - Queens (NY)
etc.

Presently Dr. Goswami is a visiting faculty at the School of Music,
University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, teaching courses in Indian music
and culture.

Global Music is an innovative summer workshop for young people (ages
13-18) designed to expand musical talents, broaden horizons and
explore cultural diversity  through music. Under the direction of a
master  Arabic violinist, vocalist,and composer Sami Abu Shumays and
other artists including Anne Elise Thomas Ph.D. (ethnomusicologist and
Qanun player) a unique youth ensemble will take shape.  While learning
to perform the music of various cultures and traditions, they also
become immersed in the rich cultures and language of the Near East.
An ensemble is created with string instruments and percussion along
with singing, poetry  recitation and folk tales.

Global Youth Village (GYV), an internationally renowned summer
training program for young people ages 13-18 located in Bedford,
Virginia has openings in its Global Music Workshop this summer.
Every summer since 1979, young people from more than 15 countries

Cassandra Shore has shared her love of Middle Eastern dance and music with
Minnesotans for many years; her commitment to bridging the geographic and
cultural divide never wavers. Shore's Jawaahir Company presents authentic work
and, in so doing, the performers constantly reveal new aspects of a sometimes
mysterious society—its beauty, sense of drama, and deep history—while
skillfully combining key aspects of tradition and innovation. This new show is
centered around a female-only house-party in which women can be themselves, away
from their sometimes restrictive daily lives. They dance and sing and revel in
the freedom of a safe and creative environment. The cast of 18 dancers will be
joined by the all-female al Hareem Orchestra, and Shore plans to incorporate a
female DJ and clips from Arabic music videos that are gaining popularity in the
Middle East. Jawaahir performances are always a feast for the senses; hypnotic
music, colorful costumes, and, of course, dazzling movement including belly

The group consists of three brothers: Samir Joubran on oud and voice,
Wissam Joubran on oud, and the youngest,
Adnan Joubran, also on oud. The trio has been in existence only a few
years, and has already established an international
reputation for their incredible live performances. The day before
their concert at Sundin Hall, they will attend a screening
at Oak St. Cinema of a documentary made in 2005 about them. After the
film, the brothers will take part in a panel
discussion/question-and-answer session with the audience about their
art and the many questions the film explores.

The Joubrans
Samir (b. 1973), Wissam (b. 1983), and Adnan (b. 1985) Joubran were
born in the biblical city of Nazareth in Galilee,
into a family with a strong musical tradition. Their mother sang in a
Muashahat ensemble and their father, Hatem, is a master oud maker
known throughout the Arab world. As soon as he could, Hatem started
teaching Samir to play this ancient pre-cursor of the lute. At the
tender age of 9 Samir began his formal musical education at Nazareth
Institute of Music. He completed his studies at the Muhammad Abdul
Wahhab Conservatory in Cairo, having in the interim performed at some
of the most important venues in the Middle East. His talent as a
composer quickly gained him the opportunity to work with leading Arab
artists and intellectuals (Mahmoud Darwish the poet, Rashid Masharawi
the film director). He has also been invited to work with the French
film director Francois Dupeyron and the choreographers Héla Fattoumi
and Eric Lamoureux. Wissam was apprenticed to his father, from whom he
inherited the skill of oud making. In 2002 he went on to the
prestigious Antonio Stradivarius Institute of Cremona in Italy to
begin a 4-year course to perfect his instrument making talent. Samir
and Wissam began touring outside the Middle East in August 2002 and
since then their reputation has grown through performances in Europe,
Canada, and Brazil. Their first album, Tamaas, released in 2003 by
`daqui' is a masterpiece, displaying their intimate knowledge of the
music and history of their instrument and their wonderful
improvisational talent. The youngest brother, Adnan, made his debut on
the international stage in October 2004. He is considered to be a
prodigy by his older brothers. Le Trio Joubran is a logical step for
three brothers joined by music, by fraternity, and by humanity. Their
album Randana (Randana-Fairplay/Harmonia Mundi) was released in March

This course explores some of the rich musical traditions of South Asia
that lie outside of the "classical" canon. Genres and styles discussed

bulk of the course will be spent listening to and reading about musics
from India, we will also address musics from Pakistan, Nepal, and
Afghanistan. Each musical style will be discussed in its unique
socio-cultural milieu, as well as within wider political, economic,
stylistic, and cultural continuities.

Amirhossein Kiani

A native of Iran, Amirhossein was born in the city of Esfahan in 1988.
He discovered strong ties to Persian classical music at the very early
age. He started playing Tar (a Persian classical string instrument)
when he was thirteen years old. He has also studied the Vocal Persian
Repertoire (Radif) under the supervision of Masters Manuchehr Ruhani
and Shahriar Baluchestani. He is mostly a self-taught in Tar
performance.Amirhossein moved to Minneapolis in 2005 and is currently
pursuing a degree in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota.

Iman Aganj

Born in Mashhad, Iran, in 1983, Iman started playing the piano at the
age of 17. He is self-taught and learned how to read music by studying
a few books.Iman moved to Minneapolis in 2005. He is a graduate
student of Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota.

Aida Shahghasemi

Born in Tehran, in 1986, Aida began playing the Daf at the age of
thirteen. She was instructed by Master Amir Samadi a student of Mirza
Agha Ghowsi. She is self-taught on the vocals and has performed with
the Dordaneh Ensemble in Iran on summer trips for the past four years.
Aida moved to Minneapolis in 2000. She is completing her
Psychology/Anthropology Bachelor's degrees at the University of Minnesota.

Learn advanced concepts and techniques of North Indian Classical
Music
from a master artist and scholar. Continuing from "Introduction to
North Indian Vocal Music" (offered in Fall 2007), learn advanced
vocal training in North Indian music. Gain a panoramic view of Indian
music, its meaning and place and a greater understanding of the
diversity and possibilities of human expression. Learn advanced voice
culture and compositions in Hindustani music through hands on vocal
lessons and exercises, audio/video material, concert experience,
classroom discussions, guest lectures and writing assignments. This
is a
fascinating course and a unique opportunity for anyone interested in
music, aesthetics or Indian culture.

In this course, you will also explore some of the many varieties of
music in today's India and discuss the cultural, social and
historical processes that contribute(d) to this musical diversity. In
this process we will direct our attention to dialogues of music and
meaning within and beyond India. The course will begin with an
overview
of the main elements of Indian Music, then discuss how these elements
are used in North Indian Classical Music, Popular Music and Folk
Music,
ending with a discussion of music's role in Indian culture and
society, with emphasis on social organization, gender and religion.

Leili Tajadod Pritschet, a Minneapolis dancer/choreographer who was
born in Iran, will present her story, Hidden Yearning, on the
Intermedia Arts stage as a cross-cultural tapestry of Persian
classical dance, multi-cultural music, video and Sufi poetry. The show
combines the energies of many artists—Middle Eastern and American,
Muslim, Christian and Jewish—to probe issues of immigration,
assimilation and faith.

Hidden Yearning is inspired by the 13th century-Persian poet Rumi,
whose passion is rooted in Sufism, "the alchemy of the heart," the
mystical aspect of Islam. The exquisite beauty of the dance, poetry
and music reveals a different face of the Islamic world than the
austere Islamic fundamentalism held in the minds of most Americans.

Pritschet says, "This artistic expression has grown out of my own
life, my heritage as a native of Iran (Persia), and as a woman in the
Islamic culture. I was deeply immersed in my country's culture of
dance — researching, studying, performing, choreographing, teaching,
and producing with some of the world's finest artists."

That all changed in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Islamic
fundamentalists forbade performing arts and rigidly restricted the
rights of women. Because of her visibility as a woman with a voice in
the arts and in the media, Ms. Pritschet was imprisoned, tortured and
disabled.  The power of her feminine strengths and vulnerabilities
were essential to her survival. She escaped Iran to seek political
asylum and safety here in the U.S.  9/11 motivated her to create a
production based on fear of the unknown and her belief that fear and
intolerance cannot be eliminated, but they can be transformed.

Directed by Amber Lee Olivier, the cast include dancers Canae Weiss,
Catherine Liska, Hoa Elm, Jennifer Amaya, Ken Yoder, Lisa Bah, Louise
Indritz, Patty Lefaive, Stefania Strowder, Steve Elm, Saed Kakish,
Summer Kendall, Susan McKenna, and Ted Ulrich; musicians David Harris,
and Aida Shahghasemi; set is by Hend Al-Mansour.

Hidden Yearning is funded in part by a Cultural Community Partnership
grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, and is a collaboration with
VSA arts of Minnesota. English captioning will be provided for the
Farsi, English and American Sign Language used; Saturday's show will
be audio described for patrons with vision loss.

Sina Goudarzi
A native of Iran, Sina has been involved with the art of Persian
calligraphy for the past 30 years. He has been trained by different
Grand masters of "Iranian School of Calligraphy" such as, Mr.
Amirkhani and Mr.Arabshahi, where he also received his calligraphy
diploma, and later became an official instructor, teaching in Tehran,
Iran . He also studied with Grand Master M. Ehasie for a number of
years and learnt different schools of calligraphy. He has been greatly
influenced by this Grand master. He has been active in different
calligraphy exhibitions in Houston, Minneapolis, Washington DC, and
Tehran for the past 19 years. He also lectured in the subject of
Persian calligraphy in Houston TX, Minneapolis MN, Washington DC, and
Tehran. He has also lectured for the "International Conference of
Calligraphy in the World of Islam" with the subject of
"Visual Foundation of Nastaliq in Architecture" October 2002, Tehran.
Most recently, he had an illustrated lecture in the subject of
"History of Persian Calligraphy" at the Fisher gallery, Washington DC.
He has collected works in private collections in Tehran, Amsterdam,
Houston, New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angles, and
Minneapolis. Sina is an Alumni member of Minneapolis College
of Art+Design (MCAD), class of 1998, and the founder of Geesu
Art+Design, 2002. He currently works as an Art Director in Twin Cities.
