Expedient way of intro is my standard bio (long, but read what you want to):
Shelby Keith Dixon is the retired Chairman of the Department of Fine Arts and
Director of Orchestras at Homestead High School, Mequon, Wisconsin, USA, a
position which he held for 26 years, 1975-2001. Prior to assuming that position
Mr.Dixon served as Choir Director at Deerfield High School, Deerfield, Illinois.
He subsequently was Assistant Professor of Music History and Literature and
Music Director of Theatre Alverno at Alverno College, Milwaukee, posts he held
from 1969 to 1975.
Mr. Dixon has extensive background in brasses, keyboard and strings. He has
served as Music Director of the Milwaukee Players at the Pabst Theatre,
orchestra conductor with Milwaukee's Sullivan Chamber Ensemble, Milwaukee's
"Music Under the Stars", and as Assistant Conductor of the Northwestern
University Chapel Choir. Mr. Dixon holds the Bachelor of Music Education and
Master of Music History and Literature degrees in from Northwestern University
School of Music, Evanston, Illinois. He is twenty-four year veteran conductor
with the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestras (MYSO), the last twenty as
Associate Conductor of MYSO's Senior Symphony, based at the Milwaukee Youth Arts
Center. On their successful tours he has conducted in Italy, Scotland, Spain,
Carnegie Hall, Montreal, Sarasota, toured China in preparation for MYSO’s 2007
“Beijing and Beyond” Tour, and will conduct them at the Music Educators’
National Conference Convention in April.
Mr Dixon was Interim Music Director of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestras,
Elgin, Illinois. A past Orchestra Coordinator and Brass Coach of the Wisconsin
State High School Honors Orchestra, Mr. Dixon is also a festival adjudicator for
the Wisconsin School Music Association, has served Concordia
University-Wisconsin on its music education faculty, and is a free-lance
conductor, clinician, consultant and studio teacher. Mr. Dixon has served on
the Milwaukee Civic Music Association's Board of Directors, and as administrator
for MYSO's "Progressions" string orchestra program for Milwaukee resident
minority children..
He has three children, all violinists and soccer players. His two sons hold
Masters degrees in violin performance from Northwestern University. The older
has been a full-time 1st violinist in the Colorado Symphony in Denver and is a
free-lance orchestral/country musician and contractor in Nashville (violin,
viola, mandolin, cello). The younger son is President of “Dixonstrings.com”,
based in Chicago. His daughter is a graduate of UW-Madison in Political Science
and Italian Language and Literature, and currently a Master’s student in Special
Education. His wife, Janet, is director of middle school orchestras in the
Mequon-Thiensville Schools. Mr Dixon enjoys golf and announcing all the
basketball and soccer games for Homestead High School, Mequon (Milwaukee),
Wisconsin, USA.
