I just got my copy of "Wild Hope" today. The track listing differs
from the listing given earlier. No bonus tracks on mine.
Extraordinary
Although not the most "extraordinary" song on the album, good vocals
and interesting lyrics keep it from fading into the background.
Mandy sings "Now I'm ready to be extraordinary", but she already is.
6/10
All Good Things
This was described as a "pop hit in waiting" by Billboard, and I
would have to agree. This is my favourite of Mandy's collaborations
with the Weepies. Clocking in at less than three minutes, this
little ditty boasts a catchy chorus and lots of hooks, that make it
well suited for mainstream radio. Good things sometimes come in tiny
packages.
9.5/10
Slummin' In Paradise
With interesting lyrics and a catchy chorus, guitar-driven "Slummin"
is one of the more upbeat songs on the album. It's a nice fun song
and there isn't anything wrong with that.
7.5/10
Most Of Me
Tacking complex matter, the depth of Mandy's song writing skills
shows in "Most Of Me", making it one of the most mature songs on the
album.
6/10
Few Days Down
"Few Days Down" is a potential single. I just love Mandy's
intonation on this song; the way she sings some words just make it
all that more enjoyable.
8.5/10
Can't You Just Adore Her?
This is my favourite of the Lori McKenna collaborations. Mandy's
describes herself in the third person and seeks adoration in spite
of her faults. We all adore you Mandy.
8/10
Looking Forward To Looking Back
Differing from most end-of-relationship songs, "Looking Forward" has
a positive rather than negative perspective. It is one of my
favourites, and good enough to be a single.
8.5/10
Wild Hope
Led by an acoustic guitar the arrangement is rounded out by strings.
Keeping it simple works for this sweet song.
8/10
Nothing That You
With an arrangement that relies heavily on drums and bass, "Nothing
That You Are" boasts the catchiest melody on the album. This song is
my absolute favourite. It should definitely be a single.
10/10
Latest Mistake
"Latest Mistake" is no mistake at all. You can tell the Lori McKenna
collaborations without looking at the CD for song writing credits.
They are different which I gladly welcome, just as long as Mandy
doesn't start singing about cows and wanting to marry her cousin.
7.5/10
Ladies Choice
Written with one of my favourite artists, Rachael Yamagata, "Ladies
Choice" is a nice departure from the typical pop song. Eschewing a
more common arrangement gives the song a different feel.
7.5/10
Gardenia
Backed only by piano, the sheer honesty of "Gardenia" might be
mildly shocking to some. This is the most risqué song on the album,
with Mandy declaring "I'm the one who likes to make love on the
floor." You can feel the intensity of the emotion and hear the power
in Mandy's voice. The result is a breathtaking vocal showcase.
10/10
Overall I give "Wild Hope" an 8/10.
