Article on Mandy's Clothing Line - Friday, May 21, 2004
Posted by Alie
Fashion Wire Daily Interview
When you are twenty years old, and a successful actress, singer, and
avowed "shopaholic," what should you do?
Start a clothing line, naturally.
That's what Mandy Moore is doing, in between making movies (her next
is "Saved!") and recording CDs, because, well, why not?
"I just love fashion and I'm such a jeans and T-shirt sort of girl
that I kind of decided that it'd be fun to kind of make something,"
Moore explains happily. "I'm constantly searching for which is the
perfect T-shirt, so I figured I'd just create my own."
Being a responsible young woman, Moore isn't just in it for the
cash, either. She's got an altruistic motive as well.
"I'm involved with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and so I wanted to
make the T-shirts and have some of the proceeds to go the Leukemia
Lymphoma Society," she says earnestly. "They're cool T-shirts with
lines from my favorite songs and stuff going back to older music
with covers and stuff like `Hard To Get By On A Smile' by Cat
Stevens. Stuff from Elton John. The line is coming out in the next
couple of months. They'll be at specialty stores and boutiques and
stores like that in the next couple of month. As things get
finalized, it'll be out there a bit more."
Having a new apparel line to work on is a perfect distraction for
the pretty actress, whose high-profile romance with tennis star Andy
Roddick recently ended.
"I've learned that I am just not going to talk about my personal
life anymore. You have to learn that lesson sometime," she says with
a shrug. "I'd like a little more excitement in my life sometimes.
I'm such a homebody. I'm fine with that too. I just sort of have my
life and I'm happy with it." Especially with having a whole new
career as a clothing maven to keep her busy.
Mandy Moore may be the next pop singer turned Broadway performer.
She was asked about the Broadway show 'Wicked' the other day on her
official website and responded, "'Wicked' is beyond amazing! I've
actually seen it twice and was offered the chance to replace Kristin
Chenoweth once she leaves the show. What an honor... But how could
anyone step into those shoes? She's pretty unbelievable and
irreplaceable and totally owns that role. Although I have to say
that I'm obsessed with Idina Menzel. To me, she is the ultimate
singer/performer and her voice blows you out of the water." Moore
also recommended 'Assassins'
Don't look for any cola endorsement contracts headed Mandy Moore's
way anytime soon. When the actress/singer was asked if she preferred
Pepsi or Coke on her official website on Thursday (June 24), Moore
responded, "Soda is disgusting. Vitamin water all the way!"
As Hilary Faye in the wickedly funny new film "Saved!" Mandy Moore
turns in her pom-pom roles for something a bit more devilish. In
this exclusive event recording artist and actress Mandy Moore chats
with fans about movies, religion, music and working with producer
Michael Stipe (R.E.M.).
Digital Dish Diva says:
Welcome to MSN Live! This afternoon we are very pleased to welcome
Mandy Moore back to MSN Live to talk about her new film "Saved!"
Digital Dish Diva says:
Please help me welcome back Mandy Moore.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Mandy, welcome back. It's great to see you again! How've you been?
Mandy Moore says:
Oh my gosh. I've been great, happy. Life is good!
Digital Dish Diva says:
Well, I have to tell you and I think you know that I LOVED "Saved!"
Mandy Moore says:
Thank you so much!
Digital Dish Diva says:
What kind of reaction are you getting from fans for "Saved!"?
Mandy Moore says:
I'm really proud of the movie so it's just exciting to have that
buzz out there and to have people come up to you and say they love
the movie since it's not out there yet. It's going wide on Friday.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Tell us a little about Hilary Faye.
Digital Dish Diva says:
I know you've never heard that question before. :
Mandy Moore says:
Mac and I are doing a tour this week and we get that question a lot.
She's sweet and overzealous and steadfast in her religious beliefs
and using her faith as an excuse for her actions and manipulation of
her friends. It was fun to play the bad girl.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Let's talk a bit about working with Macaulay Culkin. What is he
really like?
Mandy Moore says:
Mac, having had all the success he's had in his life could be any
number of things, but he couldn't be more down to earth and he has
the most wicked sense of humor. He was cracking us up on the set all
the time.
Digital Dish Diva says:
When I spoke with you and the cast last month you told me about
throwing things off the balcony. Can you tell the fans about this?
Mandy Moore says:
(laughs) It started with Patrick teaching me how to spit and slowly
evolved into throwing marshmallows and dumplings. It was fun and
silly and we were acting like 4th graders and it was fun to see if
we could hit the targets we wanted to.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Let's see what the audience is asking.
gailkitty in Onstage_1 asks:
What do you mean by "it's going wide on Friday"?
Mandy Moore says:
"Saved" is only in about 20 theaters right now and on Friday it will
be in about 600, so it will be released to a wider audience.
banglebabe1 in Onstage_1 asks:
Mandy, I love your new website design at www.mandymoore.com and the
official infopop message board on it. It's all really cool. My
question is, how scary or exciting is it to be signed to a new
record label?
Mandy Moore says:
I am super excited to be at a place where people are excited to have
me and to feel a part of a team. I'm curious and excited to see how
the last record will influence the music I'll be recording in the
future.
Mandy Moore says:
I'm on Sire Warner Brothers.
banglebabe1 in Onstage_1 asks:
Mandy, what musical direction are you planning on going in for your
next CD?
Mandy Moore says:
I think it's going to continue in the same vein as the last record.
I've been writing music with friends and I'm excited to sing my own
words. I feel I have something to write about and say.
mmooreNET in Onstage_1 asks:
Will "Saved!" be released in Canada?
Mandy Moore says:
I'm sure it will be if it's not already. I think we've done
interviews with Canadian cities which leads me to believe it's going
to be released there. Depending on how the movie does, will
determine how many theaters it will be released in.
RisingOnline in Onstage_1 asks:
Hey, I'm Raul. I'm from Barcelona (Spain). Mandy, if you had to
choose a character of your movies (Lana, Jamie, Haily, Anna, Hilary)
that was looked more like your personality, what would you choose?
Perhaps to none of them in fact.
""Bare"Naked"Girl"" in Onstage_1 asks:
I think you're an amazing singer and actress, and I just wanted to
say I love you you're my idol. You're such an inspiration for young
girls!
Mandy Moore says:
I would like to think that I have a bit of Jamie, Halley and Anna, a
little of all three.
ThenaThenaBoBena in Onstage_1 asks:
Hey Mandy! When will the "Saved!" soundtrack be out?
Mandy Moore says:
If the movie continues to go well they have batted around the idea
of a soundtrack which is great because the music is stellar.
Digital Dish Diva says:
I hope there will be. The music is awesome.
Angelis4Christ in Onstage_1 asks:
How do you feel about being considered a role model or having people
look up to you? We are actually the same age and I look up to you.
Is does that weird you out?
Mandy Moore says:
It doesn't weird me out at all. I'm so flattered and taken aback
that people look up to me and what I've accomplished. I take every
day, day by day and not take it for granted.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Is there pressure being a role model? Do you always have to watch
what you are doing?
Mandy Moore says:
I think, obviously, a certain amount of responsibility comes with it
and you keep that in the back of your mind, but I don't let it
dictate my life and what you see is what you get. I guess I'm just
lucky in that sense.
MrsShaneWest04 in Onstage_1 asks:
Hi Mandy, I'm Serena and I'm your number 1 fan in Italy! I was
wondering if you are planning a European trip anytime soon and if
you think your next album will be released over here too? Thank you!
Mandy Moore says:
There's no trip to Europe planned right now. The next record will
definitely be released in Europe and I'll tour as well.
tracyjeffultraspy in Onstage_1 asks:
Mandy, were you a dork in middle school?
Mandy Moore says:
YES! And I'm still a dork, I'm a proud geek.
Digital Dish Diva says:
That is so hard to believe. (laughs)
Digital Dish Diva says:
Every time I meet you you are so well put together.
Mandy Moore says:
ME?! Oh gosh. Visit me on a regular day, like today. I'm sitting in
sweat pants. (laughs)
dammitzthien in Onstage_1 asks:
Mandy! You rock my socks! Do you find comfort in watching movies by
yourself? I personally enjoy it, as tacky as it may seem. It's good
to have time ALONE after taking a final exam or working an 8 hour
shift!
Mandy Moore says:
I love spending time by myself. I used to be really fearful of it
but I have this new chapter of my life unfold over the last few
months and I feel more confident and more like a woman. It's a
really good time and I think it comes from spending time with myself
and getting to know myself better, as cheesy as it sounds. (laughs)
mynameisnotfunn in Onstage_1 asks:
What should we expect from "Romance and Cigarettes"? Do you play a
villain? Is it a musical flick?
Mandy Moore says:
It's a musical. I play the daughter of Susan Sarandon and James
Gandolfini. It's not a huge part, I get engaged and the movie isn't
really about me but what a great experience to work with John
Turturro and the rest of the cast and take a little away with me.
CLUTCHXR in Onstage_1 asks:
Mandy how are your puppy dogs doing?
Mandy Moore says:
My doggies are good!! They are in L.A. right now and I miss them.
They are good. They are good boys.
MegaMan22_2004 in Onstage_1 asks:
Hi Mandy, I'm Travis from Florida. When I grow up, I wanna become
just like you. What is it like to become a singer?
Mandy Moore says:
Thank you very much. It's amazing to have all the opportunities I've
been lucky enough to have with music and film. You just roll with
the punches. It's not all been icing on the cake but everything
happens for a reason.
iamcurse10 in Onstage_1 asks:
Hey, Mandy...I hear Michael Stipe is kinda grouchy. Is this true? I
certainly hope not.
Mandy Moore says:
He's not grouchy at all! He's a great man and he has great taste in
films. It was fun to have him around on set. I've only seen his
passionate and wonderful side. He's so intelligent and hip and
always knows what's happening.
Litrocken1 in Onstage_1 asks:
Mandy, which movie character did you enjoy playing most of all?
Mandy Moore says:
I would have to say I had a lot of fun playing Hilary Faye and Jamie
in "A Walk To Remember."
tracyjeffultraspy in Onstage_1 asks:
Sounds to me like the movie is pointing a finger at artificial
Christianity. Is it true?
Mandy Moore says:
It is pointing a finger at hypocrisy. I think the film is sweet and
has a good Christian message. I think people need to realize there's
a good message and no finger pointing.
ForêvêrFålling in Onstage_1 asks:
Mandy, are all the songs you write, from personal experiences?
Mandy Moore says:
Yes. 100%
Zekkus1 in Onstage_1 asks:
I was wondering how often you travel and what were some of your
favorite places in the world to go?
Mandy Moore says:
I travel a little for work. I love Australia and I love London as
well.
Digital Dish Diva says:
If you had one day to do anything you'd like what would be your
ideal day?
Mandy Moore says:
That can change on a daily basis but today it would consist of being
near water, the beach or lake, being in warm weather and people I
love. And being spontaneous--hiking, sky diving, or crafts outside
(laughs).
Mandy Moore says:
It's really warm today but beautiful.
italianhendrix in Onstage_1 asks:
Mandy, how do you deal with not having any privacy?
Mandy Moore says:
I feel like I have a lot of privacy. It's not something I think
about too often. I feel like I'm lucky to be left alone in a sense
and I'm not in the tabloids.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Is there a place where they leave you alone the most?
Mandy Moore says:
Anywhere really outside of L.A. isn't bad. There are bits of New
York you expect it but in L.A. they will follow you everywhere. I
saw a picture of my house on the internet the other day. It was the
one thing I didn't want to happen.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Is it surreal when you see yourself on a tabloid?
Mandy Moore says:
It's surreal because most of what they write is untrue. When it has
to do with your personal life and it's untrue and you want to speak
out, it gives them satisfaction and it's something I've had to deal
with the last few months and I'm doing ok. You live and learn.
ICEIBLUE in Onstage_1 asks:
What was it like to work with such a great cast?
Digital Dish Diva says:
Eva was incredible.
Mandy Moore says:
Oh my gosh. Everybody in the movie is just unbelievable from Jena,
to Eva, to Patrick, to Mac. One of the reasons I wanted to do this
was for the amazing cast and what I could learn from them.
BabyLove80JR in Onstage_1 asks:
Hey Mandy, can you tell us a little bit about your new clothing
line, MBlem?
Mandy Moore says:
Thanks. It's something small and quiet that I didn't expect to come
out because it's not like a J. Lo line. I'm a jeans and t-shirt girl
and have been searching for the perfect t-shirt so they will be
plain with small things on them like my favorite lyrics and they'll
be making their way to the stores in the next few weeks.
Digital Dish Diva says:
What are some of your favorite lines?
Mandy Moore says:
"Hard to get by on a smile." and "Gonna getcha getcha getcha." It's
fun to do and I did it selfishly because I wanted them for myself
and some of the profits will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Mandy, what are some of your favorite songs?
Mandy Moore says:
It's constantly changing. "Last Goodbye" by Jeff Buckley
and "Nobody's Crying". . . (I'm checking my iPod) "Another White
Dash" and "Free Man in Paris" by Joni Mitchell and "It's Too Late."
Mandy Moore says:
That's what I've been listening to the last little bit.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Well, Mandy, that is all the time we have for today. From all of us
here at MSN Live, thanks for chatting with fans about "Saved!" Go
see "Saved!" this weekend.
Mandy Moore says:
Thank you so much for you continuing support. I hope you'll go
see "Saved!" because I think it's an important film to go see. Visit
me on my only official message board on my website.

Early Oscar buzz
By Craig Outhier, Tribune
Woe is he who goes foraging for potential Oscar nominees before
September. Seasonally speaking, Oscar is a late fall, early winter
sort of spud — as far as the main categories go, you won't
find many
winners in recent years that originated in any month other than
those that end with "ber."
Sometimes, there are exceptions. Julia Roberts won for "Erin
Brockovich" a few years back. That was a February release. Another
big winner, "Gladiator," leapt onto the scene in May 2000. Last
year . . . well, that was the exception to the exception. Nothing
remotely Oscarly came out in the first half of last year.
The midyear Oscar primer for 2004 is somewhat more promising, led by
a $400 million-grossing Passion play and a little romance about
losing your head.
BEST ACTOR
No performance, be it by man or woman, child or adult, ogre or
donkey, quite defied my expectations as did Jim Carrey's work
in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." As a fidgety,
heartbroken loner who pays to have Kate Winslet zapped from his
memories, Carrey completely retuned his motor, delivering the most
nuanced, inward performance of his career.
For suffering hours of simulated beatings and other apocryphal
tortures, Jim Caviezel may get a push for his title role in Mel
Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ." Mario Van Peebles strutted
and
bullied his way to rave reviews in "Baadasssss!" while Ewan McGregor
discovered a new core of haunted nihilism in "Young Adam."
Potential Oscar contenders: Carrey and Caviezel both have an outside
chance.
BEST ACTRESS
As the spunky, moody misfit who Jim Carrey chases through his own
gray matter in "Eternal Sunshine," Kate Winslet gave her brightest,
most lively performance since "Titanic." It's a safe bet that the
zombie masskilling spectacular "Dawn of the Dead" will go Oscar-
less, but Sarah Polley gave the brainsplattering proceedings a
dramatic urgency with her firstrate performance as a widowed nurse.
Gena Rowlands, directed by son Nick Cassavetes in "The Notebook,"
gave a moving performance as a mentally diminished woman charmed by
the story of her own youth.
Potential Oscar contenders: Somewhat likely Winslet, less likely
Rowlands.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
In a film that inspired so much derision, admiration and
controversy, it was Romanian actress Maia Morgenstern who cut
through the static, playing a grieving mother forced to witness her
son's cruel demise in ``The Passion of the Christ.''
Morgenstern's
boiling, mostly wordless performance humanized what could have been
a purely pornographic spectacle of violence and gore.
Pop moonbeam Mandy Moore flashed unexpected comedic chops as a
Biblethumping holy terror in "Saved!" French stunner Virginie
Ledoyen was tres formidable as a headstrong freedom fighter in the
quasi-farcical wartime thriller "Bon Voyage."
Potential Oscar candidates: Morgenstern, if there is a God.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
With the formidable marketing muscle of Miramax behind him, David
Carradine could knock the competition dead with his performance as
the smooth, sad-eyed villain in "Kill Bill: Vol. 2" — and
don't
think Oscar voters wouldn't love giving it to him.
As conflicted frontiersman Davy Crockett, Billy Bob Thornton shined
in the otherwise lusterless "The Alamo." Eric Bana was a tanned
tower of virtue in Wolfgang Petersen's epic "Troy."
Potential Oscar contenders: Realistically, probably just Carradine.
BEST PICTURE
Lacking a powerful distributor, Mel Gibson pocketed the lion's
share
of the fantastic grosses earned by "The Passion of the Christ" —
and
if he wants the picture to enjoy a strong Oscar publicity push, he
might have to dip into his earnings. Besides which, it's unclear
whether Gibson can shake charges of anti-Semitism and marshal
widespread Oscar support in Hollywood.
Maybe Oscar will take a cue from the Cannes Film Festival and give a
documentary a shot at the main prize. When the smoke has finally
cleared, Morgan Spurlock's "Super Size Me" and Michael
Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" will rank among the most successful
documentaries in history, and Kevin MacDonald's mountainclimbing
drama hybrid "Touching the Void" is certainly in the same caliber.
Michel Gondry's scrumptiously warped "Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind" earned rave reviews, but is probably too outre for
the Academy's staid taste, and Petersen's "Troy" —
through possessed
of Oscar-caliber scope — tripped while storming the box-office
beachhead.
Potential Oscar contenders: "The Passion of the Christ" should win
some converts.
And in the second half of the film year . . .
A few late-year offerings that could make an Oscar splash:
"Alexander": Beating a rival Leonardo DiCaprio-Baz Luhrman project
to the finish line, Oliver Stone ("Platoon") directs Colin Farrell
as the continent-conquering Macedonian. (opens Nov. 5)
"The Aviator": Leonardo DiCaprio plays Howard Hughes in his most
productive, pre-germaphobic years, when he built an aviation empire
and romanced the likes of Katharine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett), Ava
Gardner (Kate Beckinsale) and Jean Harlow (Gwen Stefani). Martin
Scorsese directs. (November TBA)
"Ladder 49": Trapped in a fire, waiting for his mates to rescue him,
a firefighter (Joaquin Phoenix) reflects on his life and career, a
la "For Love of the Game." (Oct. 8)
"I Heart Huckabees": From his usual comic vantage, director David O.
Russell ("Three Kings") tells the story of a husband-wife team (Jude
Law and Naomi Watts) who help clients solve existential issues.
(October TBA)
"Unchain My Heart: The Ray Charles Story": Like Angela Bassett
playing Tina Turner in 1993's "What's Love Got to Do With It?"
Jamie
Foxx could warrant Oscar consideration portraying the late, great
blues pianist. (Oct. 29)
"An Unfinished Life": Reclaiming his usual Christmas cleanup spot in
the Miramax batting order, director Lasse Hallstrom
("Chocolat," "The Cider House Rules") helms this drama about an
abused wife and mother (Jennifer Lopez) who escapes to Wyoming to
live with her estranged father-in-law (Robert Redford). (Dec. 24)
tell her that: 1. m,andy is not really big lately..
she's big as in the height.
2. she is out of her mind! kidnapping a celebrity is
soo like not right!

A Bogus Age
Quibble over temporal minutiae? Or waste one scrumptious
butterscotch nanosecond in useless quantification of any sort?
Never.
So when she, by whom I of course mean Mandy Moore, was seen getting
her colloquial groove on at various drinky local venues last weekish
in the company of other also notably probably not really 23-year-old
film stars, and then promptly turns around and says silly things
like, "I'm the most boring 20-year-old you'll ever meet," on various
national late-night talk shows (and I'll SAY David Letterman when I
see a fucking CHECK from David Letterman)... well.
And if sources official-ish confirm the date of Mandy's nativity to
be a very 20-ish April 10, 1984, and that information conflicts
somehow with that of bar managers who, when asked, swore boozily
that Mandy's ID--legitimate or otherwise--put her in the ballpark of
a hale and elderly 23, then it becomes ever clearer that the only
way we'll ever get to the bottom of things, naturally, is to cut her
in half and count the goddamn rings.
Oh. And, "It is sort of a bogus age," Mandy just reportedly said
about something else entirely, which in no way lessens the
statement's ironic impact when considered in this particular
context.
Saved! took in $185,834 on Thursday (its 28th day of release), a
drop of 5% from Wednesday.
This was a theather average of $314.
Its total gross now stands at $7,367,087.
http://romanticmovies.about.com/od/racingstripes/a/racingtr062404.htm
Movie Synopsis: Racing Stripes is the tale of a baby zebra named
Stripes (voiced by FRANKIE MUNIZ), who is accidentally abandoned by
a traveling circus during a rainstorm. The helpless zebra foal is
discovered by horse trainer Nolan Walsh (BRUCE GREENWOOD), who
rescues Stripes and takes him home to live with him and his young
daughter Channing (HAYDEN PANETTIERE) on their modest Kentucky farm.
Stripes soon becomes a happy member of the farm's barnyard animal
family, led by a cranky Shetland Pony named Tucker (voiced by DUSTIN
HOFFMAN) and Franny (voiced by WHOOPI GOLDBERG), a wise goat who
looks after Stripes. The group also features bird-brained rooster
Reggie (voiced by JEFF FOXWORTHY) and Goose, (voiced by JOE
PANTOLIANO) a deranged big-city pelican on the lam who's hiding
out
in the sticks until the heat dies down in Jersey.
Stripes and Channing grow up together as best friends who,
unbeknownst to Channing, share a similar ambition – both dream of
racing in the prestigious Kentucky Open. Channing longs to train as
a jockey, but her protective father refuses to let her compete in
the potentially dangerous sport. Stripes just knows that if he could
get onto the track, he could leave all the other horses in the dust.
What he doesn't know is…he's not exactly a horse.
The neighboring Estate is run by the ruthless queen of the Kentucky
racing circuit, Clara Dalrymple (WENDIE MALICK). Stripes battles the
ridicule of the Estate's thoroughbreds-in-training, Sir
Trenton's
Pride (voiced by JOSHUA JACKSON) and Ruffshod (voiced by MICHAEL
ROSENBAUM), who taunt him relentlessly about his lack of breeding
and unusual appearance. But the Estate is home to some kinder
residents, such as Sandy (voiced by MANDY MOORE), a beautiful mare
whose admiration and affection for Stripes further enrages his
rivals.
With the help of his barnyard friends, Stripes must overcome
prejudice and self-doubt to pursue his lifelong dream of running
with the big horses and landing in the winner's circle.
Some champions are born, not bred.

Celebrity Interview
Devil or Angel?
Mandy Moore skewers her image with 'Saved!'
By Angela Dawson
Entertainment News Wire
HOLLYWOOD -- Despite her squeaky clean image, actress/singer Mandy
Moore has a naughty side, in a harmless sort of way.
To break the ice at the launch party for her new comedy, "Saved!,"
she instigated a food fight. Well, it wasn't exactly a food fight.
It was more a food-throwing incident. Twenty stories up in a
Vancouver hotel.
"I got these dumplings and they were horrible," recalls Patrick
Fugit, Moore's babyfaced co-star.
"She said, 'They're bad? We should just throw them off the balcony.'
And we did."
Soon other members of the young cast joined in, hurling dumplings,
egg rolls, marshmallows -- you name it -- at various individuals and
objects below.
The story seems like something generated by the studio's publicity
department to hype the movie. That is, until Moore and her cohorts
are spotted on a 15th floor balcony of a Beverly Hills hotel pulling
the same shenanigans during a press junket. Confronted later, Moore
admits that nostalgia combined with restlessness prompted the young
Hollywood hipsters to behave like 13-year-olds on a field trip.
Aside from these occasional outbursts, Moore, 20, is growing up to
be a mature, down-to-earth young lady. In "Saved!," the Orlando,
Fla., native pokes fun at her wholesome image, playing an
overzealous born-again Christian named Hilary Faye. It's her second
movie with a religious theme, but the two couldn't be more different.
In "A Walk to Remember," she played a minister's daughter who always
seemed to know the right thing to do. In the irreverent "Saved!,"
she plays the queen bee at a Christian school who makes life
difficult for those that don't share her narrow interpretation of
the Bible. They include her disabled brother, Roland (Macauley
Culkin), and best friend Mary (Jena Malone).
Moore talked to Entertainment News Wire about "Saved!," her music,
her recent breakup with tennis star Andy Roddick and her hopes for
the future.
Entertainment News Wire: Hilary Faye is kind of a mean girl, don't
you think?
Mandy Moore: No. She's just a little misguided.
ENW: Did you have cliques at your high school?
Moore: Oh, absolutely. There are cliques in Hollywood. There are
cliques in every aspect of life.
ENW: Did you draw from personal experience for this character?
Moore: Not really. A lot of it comes down to the writing. I felt
like with Hilary Faye, I had to walk a fine line where she wasn't
just a complete bitch, that she did have a heart. There had to be
something that grounded her, because she could've easily been over
the top and just a complete caricature. But then how would she have
been the most popular girl in school? So there had to be something
about her that was really likable to people and that people were
able to sort of write off that she's a little crazy sometimes.
ENW: She has a lot of inner rage?
Moore: Yeah.
ENW: How do you deal with anger?
Moore: Through acting. Why not? It's using a little bit of that. I'm
not a very angry person. I do tend to lose my temper about stupid
things, like traffic here in L.A. It makes me crazy. Crazy. I guess
that acting is a great outlet for expressing myself in a way --
being sad about something or being angry. The other day we were
filming a scene where someone had died and we just found out the
news and I was so scared about the scene for the whole shoot. I was
like, "How am I going to be able to burst out into tears?" Then, on
the day I had to shoot the scene, I don't know where I went and what
I thought about, I just started sobbing uncontrollably. It happened
with "Saved!" too. You're just like, "Where did that come from?"
ENW: You wear a fat suit in a flashback. Was that fun?
Moore: Yeah. I had ice cream and cotton candy smeared all over my
face. My hair was all ratted and I had pimples. It was great. I
mean, I loved the idea of really just being able to transform myself
like that for a role.
ENW: Where do you see yourself going?
Moore: I don't know. I think that I'm still trying to figure that
out. I'm trying to take it day by day and project by project. I've
just been so lucky with "Saved!" and the film that I just finished,
John Turturro's "Romance & Cigarettes." It's just about doing stuff
that feels right.
ENW: Was "Saved!" a conscious choice to break out of the good girl
image?
Moore: I don't think by doing this film I'm going to alienate the
Christian fan base that liked me from "A Walk To Remember." You
can't really base your decisions on people's preconceived notions of
who you are. I'm just trying to continue to do stuff that satisfies
me and challenges me. It's not about making those decisions for
other people. In "Romance & Cigarettes," I have this sort of crazy
make-out scene with this actor. And we were laughing because we're
just really going at it. I said to John (Turturro), "maybe people
will finally see that I'm not this sort of wholesome goody-goody."
ENW: It was scary how well you tackled the role of Hilary Faye.
Moore: Maybe there's a lot of Hilary Faye in me and I just don't
know it. Maybe I got that sort of aggression and anger out playing
her.
ENW: Were there personal things you could relate to?
Moore: I went to Catholic high school for, like, half a year. And
religion was almost, like, not necessarily taboo to talk about, but
it wasn't the cool thing to talk about. We had theology class and we
went to Mass every Friday, but it wasn't the sort of thing that you
talk about with your friends. When we were in Canada making this, we
went to this Christian youth rock concert and they had someone kind
of doing a sermon there and this rock group performed. I was looking
around at people my age and going, "This is their life. This is what
grounds them and is important to them." I didn't realize that there
is this sort of underground youth Christian movement. It's pretty
incredible.
ENW: Did you do anything special for your 20th birthday?
Moore: No. I was in New York filming. A bunch of my friends came up.
A bunch? Like two or three of my friends came to New York, and my
parents were there, and they sort of had a bit of a surprise party
for me. I thought that I was just going to go to dinner with four or
five people and it ended up being like 15, and it was really fun.
ENW: Do you feel grown up now?
Moore: Kind of. But I've kind of felt this way for a while. I guess
my age is just kind of catching up with me. I've felt like an adult
for quite some time. I guess that it's just the responsibility that
comes along with everything. It's weird, because most of my friends
are quite a bit older than me. I'll hang out with some of my
girlfriends who are in college and I feel like I don't understand
completely everything that they're going through because I'm not in
college. I just sort of have led a different life than they have.
It's weird because lately I've found myself going, "I can't really
relate in that sense." I wish that I could, but I just don't
understand. I don't go to school and stay up late working on
research papers and waking up to go to class and being tired.
ENW: Would you like to attend college at some point?
Moore: It's not necessarily on my radar right now. That's not to say
that I don't want to get some extended studies in some sort of
curriculum just to keep my mind occupied. I feel like sometimes even
with all of the reading that I do and all the interesting people I
meet, my brain can start to go to mush. I just need my mind to be a
little bit sharper sometimes.
ENW: How would you have time with your busy acting and music career?
Moore: If you want to do something you can always find time for it.
I want to take cooking classes. I want to take flying lessons. I
can't keep procrastinating. I need to be a little more proactive
about stuff.
ENW: Are you getting over your breakup with Andy?
Moore: Yeah. Life is good.
ENW: Your relationship was well-publicized. What did you learn from
that experience?
Moore: I learned that I'm not going to talk about my personal life
anymore.
ENW: You've admitted you're a bit of a shopaholic. What do you buy?
Moore: Clothes, but not just for me. I love shopping for friends and
family and stuff. I'd much rather buy stuff for other people than
for myself. It's so much more fun to see people get stuff. Besides,
I don't go out and spend $10,000 a day on stuff. I'm not frivolous.
I love jeans and T-shirts. I'm eternally shopping for those. I have
a hundred pairs of jeans. I don't buy jewelry, cars or houses.
ENW: Are you going to join the ranks of other celebrities and start
your own clothing line?
Moore: Yeah. It's sort of in the works. It's a line of T-shirts that
have to do with music. There are some quotes from my favorite songs.
I'm involved with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, so I wanted to make
the shirts and have some of the proceeds go to the society.
ENW: Are you working on another album or movie?
Moore: I'll work on an album this summer and maybe a film will sort
of come about. They're always sort of lying about. It's kind of nice
not knowing exactly what I'm going to do.
ENW: Are you proud of the music you've done?
Moore: I'm proud of the last record, "Coverage," and some of the
songs on the album before that, but anything earlier than that, uh-
uh. No.
ENW: Did you outgrow it?
Moore: No. I didn't even necessarily like it at the time, but being
a young artist and not necessarily having my voice heard -- just
because maybe I was a young person -- I ended up having to sing a
lot of music that I'm not really proud of or passionate about.
That's not a fun feeling. So I'm really glad to be at the age and
with a group of people and a new label that really allows me to be
creative and collaborative, but with my own opinion being heard.
There's nothing worse than schlepping out on the road and singing
and dancing when it wasn't me at all in the beginning. I just want
to make the coolest pop record I can. I feel like I'm in a
completely different place now. I actually have something to say and
something to write about. And I haven't in the past.
ENW: Did you get feedback from any of the artists you covered on the
last album?
Moore: Elton John told me he loved it. He gave me a hug and a kiss.
I've seen him a couple of times, actually. He's so wonderful. He's a
great, generous, lovely man. I've been so flattered that he even
took the time to listen to it. Carole King really liked my version
and so did Carly Simon. Those are three people that I heard from. I
was like, "Oh my God, these people have heard my voice. They know
that I'm a singer and they know that I've sung their songs." That's
just way too much for me to process.
Saved! took in $195,668 on Wednesday, ranking at # 12.

Saved!
6.25.2004
Al Simonis
In My Humble Opinion
Jesus saves sinners, and redeems them for valuable prizes!
The current art house darling Saved! is the most recent addition to
the panoply of controversial religious-themed films. Although it
hasn't been getting quite the press of some of the other movies
mentioned above, Saved! did have the distinction recently of being
denounced by the Christian Film and Television Commission. On May
19th, CFTVC founder Ted Baehr issued a statement calling the
film, "a sad, bigoted, anti-Christian movie that mocks the Christian
faith," and that its distributor, MGM studios, "is marketing it to
Christian children to try to divorce them from their faith!"
(source) With all due respect to Mr. Baehr, I could not disagree
more with his assessment of this film.
First off, I would not call this movie "sad" at all; on the
contrary, I found the film's overall mood to be rather bright and
cheery. The photography is lush and vivid, the music is upbeat, and
the characters are, for the most part, positive and happy. To be
fair, many of these qualities border on becoming caricatures of
themselves, however the film is intended to be a comedy and
therefore the hint of irony is appropriate for the film. Of course,
that's just my opinion, humble as it may be; Mr. Baehr is certainly
entitled to his viewpoint as well.
"Bigoted" is also a judgment call for each viewer to make. Obviously
Mr. Baehr feels that the film is intolerant of his belief system; I
on the other hand found nothing that conflicted with my conception
of Christianity. Perhaps it is because the Christianity portrayed in
Saved! is so far removed from my ELCA Lutheran upbringing, that I
was able to see it without any hang-ups. On the contrary, I was
actually offended by Mr. Baehr's remarks, on two distinct points:
first, his attempt to prejudice the potential audience by releasing
his statement over a week before the movie's scheduled release date,
and second his tacit implication (by using the phrase "the Christian
faith") that his statement represents the opinions of all Christians
of all denominations. That, sir, is called hubris.
Now then, on to the meat of the issue: is Saved! an "anti-Christian"
movie? Well, for starters, I'd like to once again point out that
there hasn't really been a single "Christian" faith for well over
500 years, starting with the Great Schism between the Catholic and
Orthodox faiths. Since then, there have been innumerable other
splits and splinters, and each resulting religion is slightly
different from the next in terms of structure, doctrine, social
beliefs, and numerous other points and positions. Methodism is not
like the Russian Orthodox church, and Catholicism is not
Pentecostal, etc.... I can tell you from my own experience that
there are at least three distinct forms of Lutheranism, which for
some people is as astounding as realizing that there's more than one
brand of stapler.
The exact denomination represented in Saved! is not implicitly
named, however it looks pretty fundamentalist. The moral code
enforced at the film's American Eagles Christian High School seems
fairly reactionary, although the atmosphere feels almost
progressive, with it's Christian Rock Music and jive-talkin' Pastor
Skip (Martin Donovan). The combination doesn't match any form of
Christianity I'm presently familiar with, although it's not too
dissimilar to what I like to call Stadium churches: those vast arena-
like structures that seat several thousand people, and require video
feeds for people to see the preacher. If anything, the film takes a
few lighthearted jabs at the contemporary aspects of the school's
Christianity, but outside of die-hard fans of Creed and Jesus
Christ: Superstar, I don't think anyone needs to fear their religion
is being made fun of.
Getting back to Mr. Baehr's arguments though, on the films opening
day (May 28th) he issued another statement, presumably after he had
actually seen the film. In this press release (found on
Movieguide.org, one of his group's websites), he states that in his
opinion, "The one character who tries to preach the Gospel in the
movie...is actually the villain." He is referring in this case to
Hillary Faye, played by pop singer Mandy Moore. Well Mr. Baehr,
you're right on one count: Hillary Fay is the "villain" of the film,
however she does not preach the Gospel, she uses it as a weapon to
assert her own dominance over her peers. She is prideful, vengeful,
ignorant, and mean-spirited, and uses her appearance of piety the
way the popular kids in secular teen films use their cars, clothes,
and cash to, ahem, "Lord" it over her classmates. Hillary Fay is all
about the "Good Deeds" or "Works of the Law" that St. Paul talks
about in the Bible, without any real hint of the "Faith" that he
says truly justifies a person's relationship with God. Mr. Baehr, if
this is the character you most related to your own religion, you
have some serious issues you need to deal with: I'd start with
Romans 3:28.
If Hillary Fay were the only major representation of Christianity in
this film, Mr. Baehr might have a point. However, I'd suggest he
also take a closer look at Pastor Skip's son Patrick (Patrick
Fugit). Patrick is certainly a religious guy, after all he was
member of a Christian skateboarding team, and played Jesus in the
production of Superstar I mentioned before. Beyond that though, he's
kind, patient, inquisitive, and open-minded. When it is revealed
that the lead character Mary (Jena Malone) is pregnant out of
wedlock, Patrick is one of the few people in the film who doesn't
write her off or abandon her. Hmm, sounds like something Jesus
would've done...
Otherwise, Mr. Baehr also points out that the film contains
homosexual characters, a lone Jewish student who "claims" to be a
stripper (he said she claims -- I assumed from watching that it was
a rumor started about her by others), a wheelchair-bound atheist,
and other assorted misfits. Mr. Baehr calls the film's attitude,
presumably with these characters in mind, "politically correct;" I
call it Christ-like. Jesus associated with prostitutes and other
social outcasts. He used nonbelievers as the heroes in his own
parables. And, most notably, Jesus healed the sick and the lame,
instead of wheeling them around to make himself appear compassionate
and involved like Mr. Baehr's friend Hillary Fay.
Finally, what of his assertion that Saved! is part of a master plan
by MGM to corrupt America's youth? Personally, I can't think of any
motive a movie studio could have besides making money. Whether or
not they have good instincts when it comes to cashing in on religion
remains to be seen, however I can't conceive of any reason why they
would actively attempt to alienate the pan-Christian audience by
releasing something that would offend them. And guess what -- they
didn't! Saved! is an entertaining film with interesting ideas, none
of which should be of any danger to someone whose faith is firm, but
open to discussion. In fact the only real issue I had with the film
was a somewhat preachy ending, where even Hillary Fay sees the error
of her ways -- Mr. Baehr, perhaps there's hope for even you as well.
As of Tuesday 22nd June, "Saved!" has taken in $6,985,585 in box
office receipts. However, its revenue has continued to shrink. On
Monday in took in $246,220 and Tuesday in took in less, $237,844. It
is likely that the film may last only a couple more weeks in
theatres.
The film performed alright considering its production budget 0f 5
million. I was hoping for a much better performance.
I uploaded "I Wanna Be With You". It is an live acoustic version
that was performed on the "Late Late Show", with Craig Kilborn, back
in 2000.

Mandy Moore - Hey
C'mon!
One! Two!
One, Two, Three, Four!
Verse:
It was a couple of years ago
I was sitting beside my window
And never will make the same mistake
'Cause that's when he walked on by
For almost a year, I followed
And I don't regret a single day
Bridge:
And then he changed
And proceeded to tear from me
Every inch of soul, you see
And he's kept it to this day
Chorus:
And I turn,
Everytime
I find a piece of him in corners of my mind
So I washed it all away
And time, it took me time
But I have left those memories back and far behind
He called me yesterday
Just to say hey!
Verse:
I was the last to know
Such an infatuation
That I can say with certainty
Bridge:
And then he changed
And proceeded to tear from me
Every inch of soul, you see
And he's kept it to this day
Chorus:
And I turn,
Everytime
I find a piece of him in corners of my mind
So I washed it all away
And time, it took me time
But I have left those memories back and far behind
He called me yesterday
Just to say hey!
Verse:
It took me a lifetime to forget you, but I did
I never want to see your face or speak your name again
Chorus:
And I turn,
Everytime
I find a piece of him in corners of my mind
So I washed it all away
And time, it took me time
But I have left those memories back and far behind
He called me yesterday
Just to say hey!

Hypocrisy, religion comedic fodder for new teen movie 'Saved'
By Jean Gordon
Details
Saved! will show through Thursday at Tinseltown Theater on Riverwind
Drive in Pearl. Phone: (601) 936-5856.
Christianity Today offers a discussion guide for the film at
www.christianitytoday.com/movies/reviews/saved.html#talk.
The film's distributor has also issued a study guide for youth groups
available at: www.savedmovie.com/studyguide.pdf.
Steve Craft admits to lingering a few minutes whenever he pops into
Tinseltown's theater number four to sweep up popcorn and collect
drink cups from the floor.
That's because theater four is currently showing the movie Saved!, a
new teen comedy set in an evangelical Christian high school.
Craft, 21, said though he's curious about the film, he doesn't plan
to watch it straight through.
"It's a mockery," he said about the movie's portrayal of the
Christian faith.
Though some critics say the film depicts evangelical Christians as
judgmental hypocrites, many say the movie's ultimate message is pro-
faith.
"It's about life, not Jesus," said Ottar Mobley, 19, who saw the film
Thursday. "But that doesn't mean life can't include faith."
The movie tells the story of a devoted Christian high school senior
named Mary (Jena Malone) who believes the best way to rid her
boyfriend, Dean (Chad Faust), of his homosexual feelings is to have
sex with him.
Her plan doesn't work.
When Dean's parents find out about his sexuality, they ship him off
to a Christian home for "de-gayification."
Soon after, Mary discovers she's pregnant, which sets off her crisis
of faith.
Rejected by her self-righteous friend Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore), Mary
finds acceptance from the school rebel Cassandra (Eva Amurri), who is
Jewish, and her wheelchair-bound boyfriend Roland (Macaulay Culkin).
For Caroline Ficara, a 24-year-old case assistant at a Jackson law
firm, the film's depiction of life at a Christian high school was
actually more liberal than her experience at a nondenominational
Christian high school in Baton Rouge.
There, she said girls who got pregnant were quietly shuttled out of
school and barred from walking across the stage at graduation to pick
up their diplomas.
Rather than being offensive, Ficara said the movie offered a positive
message.
"It's about acceptance," she said.
Tinseltown staffer Murray Nichols, 18, agreed Saved! presented a
constructive lesson about tolerance, but he said it also put forth
some troubling ideas — particularly the suggestion that it's OK
to be
homosexual.
"I'm strong against homosexuality," he said. "It made it seem like
being gay is right in the eye of God.
Christianity Today called the movie "ultimately pro-faith," but said
it makes some perceptive criticisms of evangelicals. A review posted
on the magazine's Web site said the film explores and satirizes "the
sometimes hateful and hypocritical ways some Christians treat
homosexuals and anyone with apparent sin."
Still, the review took issue with the movie's "lack of balance
between hypocritical, judgmental Christians and loving, accepting
Christians."
"It's kind of a liberal movie," Nichols said. "And I'm pretty
conservative."

No Box Office Miracle for Saved!
The religious satire starring Mandy Moore, Macaulay Culkin and Jena
Malone sinks quickly in wide release despite a promising debut and
perceived heat about its subject matter.
By FilmStew Staff Report
Other than both being ingenues, actors Macaulay Caulkin and Jena
Malone have little in common right now beyond the surprising box
office drop-off of their religiously themed teen drama Saved! in its
second week of wide theatrical release. According to
BoxOfficeMojo.com, the film experienced a 51.6% tumble this past
weekend as it played in just under 600 theaters across the United
States.
While the film's cumulative take of $6.5 million certainly
isn't
terrible and now surpasses the total production budget, it's
something of a disappointment in light of the anticipated
controversy surrounding the film's subject matter and some very
healthy per-screen averages - from $10,000 to $22,000 - during
Saved!'s first few weeks of limited release beginning Memorial
Day
Weekend.
When Culkin spoke to FilmStew last month, he recalled going to a
Christian rock concert in Anaheim, CA for research purposes and
noticing a group of fundamentalist Christians picketing outside the
arena. The actor thought to himself that if Christians could find a
reason to picket other Christians, there was no way his movie Saved!
would not offend someone.
However, although there was some chattering from naysayers on the
Internet and elsewhere during the production of Culkin's PG-13
rated
satire, it would appear that the threat of a public outcry in the
shadow of the fury accompanying The Passion of the Christ did not
nearly come to pass. In all likelihood, Saved! will quietly slip
away from theaters in the next few weeks and perhaps provoke more
discussion when it comes out later this year on DVD.
"It was so funny to see Christians picketing each other,"
says
Culkin of the concert experience. "So what makes us think that we
can get away with a movie where someone isn't going to be
offended,
at least on the outside of it. From the outside, we're dealing
with
unwed teenage mothers and homosexuality and things like that, and so
from the outside it could be semi-taboo."
In the end, both Culkin and his co-star Jena Malone's hope at the
time of their interviews that Saved! be perceived as having a pro-
faith spiritual message may have been closer to the mark. "To me,
I
find, as an audience member, that it's very much pro-faith,"
suggests Malone. "It's got a very pro-Christian message about
the
basic teachings of what Jesus was sort of saying, like acceptance
and do unto others as you'd have done to you. What you put out
into
the world is what you're going to get."
Adds Culkin: "It's really a faith-based movie with a good
Christian
message, with a good message overall," he argues. "The basis
of any
religion, let alone one with Christ in it, is be a good person, be
good to the people around you and accept people for who they are.
And I think that's the underlying message in this movie."
At this point, comments such as the May 28th pronouncements of Ted
Baehr, founder of the Christian Film & Television Commission, who
according to IMDB called Saved!, "A sad, bigoted anti-Christian
movie that mocks the Christian faith," seem like a tempest in a
teapot that never boiled.

Look who's dancing to Mandy Moore's tunes!
Washigton | June 20, 2004 3:51:24 PM IST
Mandy Moore just can't help but be amused at the fact that
a "ridiculous" dance choreographed by her is now to be enacted by
Kate Winslet And Susan Sarandon for their new movie Romance
Cigarettes.
"John told Mary-Louise (Parker) and me to choreograph a dance for
the movie. So we decided we'd become Paula Abdul. I'm the worst
dancer in the entire world, so we choreographed this silly, stupid
thing - we're doing the chicken dance in one part," Rate the
music.com quoted her as saying.
"But Kate Winslet and Susan Sarandon and these dancers studied our
tape and learned the routine from us. And it's in the movie!
It's the most ludicrous, ridiculous thing you've ever seen - and we
are getting choreography credit. That cracked us up," she added.

Moore steps out of pop-star shadows in `Saved!'
Friday, June 18, 2004
By AMY LONGSDORF
For the Courier-Post
A few years ago, Mandy Moore was a pop singer who always seemed to
be in the shadow of Britney Spears, Christina Aguliera and Jessica
Simpson.
Today, she's at the helm of a burgeoning film career that allows her
to mix commercial projects such as January's Chasing Liberty with
more offbeat films such as Saved!, which opened last weekend to
positive reviews and surprisingly solid business.
Does Moore ever ask herself, "How did I get here?"
"Yes, all the time," she says. "I feel incredibly lucky to have been
able to do Saved!, in particular. It was my first indie movie, and
everyone involved with it was there for all the right reasons. It's
my favorite of my films."
A black comedy set at a Christian high school, Saved! stars Jena
Malone as Mary, a teen who hopes to "cure" her boyfriend of his
burgeoning homosexuality by sleeping with him. She succeeds only in
getting pregnant. Soon, she's questioning her faith, a move that
brings disapproval from her best friend, the Bible-thumping Hilary
Faye.
Moore insists the movie, which was produced by R.E.M.'s Michael
Stipe, is not a satire of the Christian Right, but an affectionate
salute to the importance of having a belief system.
"I don't think that this film is controversial at all," she
says. "At the end of the day, it has something really human to say
about faith. It's a comedy. You're supposed to laugh. But I don't
think that we're making fun of any particular group of people. My
character has her heart in a really good place, but she's just a
little overzealous about things."
Earlier this year, Moore, 20, split from tennis superstar Andy
Roddick. The singer, who lives in Los Angeles with her folks, claims
she's happy to be single again. "I'm good, yeah," she says when
asked how she's handling the breakup. "Life is good. I've always
been independent."ADVERTISEMENT - CLICK TO ENLARGE OR VISIT WEBSITE
Next up for Moore is Romance and Cigarettes, a musical co-starring
Kate Winslet, James Gandolfini and John Turturro.
"We're doing songs by Bruce Springsteen and James Brown," reports
the singer. "I get to perform Bow Wow Wow's `I Want Candy.' It's
been so much fun."
And what does Moore make of Monica Lewinksky saying she'd love the
singer to play her in an upcoming HBO movie?
"I'm definitely very flattered," says Moore. "I don't know if I can
see it. I'm a pretty modest girl. I don't think that I'd be going
down that road any time soon. But I'll take it as a compliment
anyway."

A tale of four (now and former) blondes
By Malcolm Mayhew
Knight Ridder Newspapers
Five years ago, the only ones who could tell them apart were,
possibly, their parents.
Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson
looked alike, sounded alike and even acted alike - you know, each
claiming that she was "different" from the other three.
At that point, whatever. Same hair color (blond), same music
(fluffy, innocuous pop), same videos (looked like workout tapes).
Half a decade later, however, each has not only managed to stick
around - a feat unto itself in pop music - but also to strike out in
her own direction. Who'da thought?
Britney Spears
Age: 22
Flashback: With the success of her debut, 1999's "... One More
Time," Spears led the teen-pop revolution of the late '90s. The
Spice Girls might have left the door ajar for her, but Spears kicked
it open, wearing both high heels and sneakers, preaching the values
of abstinence while at the same time sexily cavorting on MTV.
Road she took: Unlike Aguilera, Simpson and Moore, Spears can barely
sing. She has made up for it, though, becoming the most
controversial female pop star since Madonna. Basically, she sells
sex more than music.
Hair is she now?: Back in March, London's "Evening Standard"
reported that Spears had been spotted with brown hair, though photos
this month showed her back to platinum blond.
Current project: She was about to resume criss-crossing the country
on her Onyx Hotel Tour, but Tuesday she canceled the remaining dates
after suffering a knee injury last week during a video shoot.
Jessica Simpson
Age: 22
Flashback: Simpson had moderate success with "Sweet Kisses" and "I
Wanna Love You Forever." Her biggest moment, perhaps, was opening
for Ricky Martin at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, the show
is memorable to her for another reason: She ripped her leather pants
onstage. Right between her legs. And no, she was not wearing
underwear. Thankfully, mom was handy with another pair of pants.
Road she took: Simpson got lost in the blonde blitzkrieg and was
pretty much a wash until she appeared in another medium, television,
first with a recurring role on "That '70s Show" and then
on "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica," her reality program with husband
Nick Lachey. As a result of the show's popularity, sales of her
latest disc, "In This Skin," have been boosted.
Hair is she now?: The only one who has stayed blonde. "Ditsy"
and "brunette" just don't go together as well.
Current project: Besides "Newlyweds," Simpson is hawking edible body
creams called Dessert Beauty. What she says about the Deliciously
Kissable Lip Fragrance Gloss (Juicy or Luscious): "The best ...
never sticky, and my lips look full and taste sweet. Makes your
breath nice, too."
ABC recently rejected "Jessica," her stab at a sitcom. But rumors
are rumbling that she'll star in the big-screen version of "The
Dukes of Hazzard" as, of course, Daisy Duke.
Mandy Moore
Age: 20
Flashback: Moore wasn't even old enough to drive when her first
record, the falsely named, dance-pop disc "So Real," came out.
Hoping to capitalize on the Britney boom, her record company
rereleased it a year later and changed her image from innocent to
not-so-innocent.
Road she took: Not only did she change her hair color, she switched
career paths, focusing on films ("A Walk To Remember," "How To
Deal") rather than music. When it came time for her to do a new
record, she freaked everybody out by putting out "Coverage," an all-
covers disc made up of rock-folk renditions of songs by Elton John,
Carole King and Joni Mitchell.
Hair is she now?: To avoid getting tagged a Britney clone, she
whacked off her hair and painted it black.
Current project: Her latest movie, "Saved!" just opened.
Christina Aguilera
Age: 23
Flashback: Aguilera's first single, "Genie in a Bottle," was typical
teen pop, but huge, putting her in direct competition with onetime
friend Spears. There still exists a McCartney-Lennon conflict
between the two, only the question isn't talent as much as: "Who's
hotter?"
Road she took: Of the four, Aguilera's the one who made a serious
bid to be a singer. Underneath the hair spray and makeup and flimsy
pop music, a pretty decent voice is begging to get out.
Hair is she now?: Black. Er, brown. Um, strawberry. Well, what day
is it?
Current project: Recovering from vocal strain; because of it, she
had to ax her Stripped Tour.

Saved!
The lowdown: Mary (Jena Malone) is a good evangelical Christian
girl. She attends a private Christian high school, is a member of
her school's prayer squad and her mom recently was recognized as her
city's top Christian Interior Decorator.
However, when Mary finds out her boyfriend is gay, she decides to
sacrifice her virginity in an attempt to change his sexual
orientation.
Soon, the worst nightmare of every teenage girl occurs: She's
pregnant. While attempting to hide her pregnancy from her friends
and the high school faculty, she befriends Cassandra, the school's
notorious rebel and only Jewish student, who is dating a boy in a
wheelchair (Macauley Culkin).
Mary soon finds herself questioning her rigid faith, and defending
herself from judgmental friends and adults while taking her
pregnancy to term.
The bottom line: A plethora of serious societal issues are addressed
with constant humor by a great cast. It is an entertaining movie
that keeps you thinking after leaving the theater.
The good stuff: A star-studded cast complements a wonderfully
designed plot. The actors portray their characters perfectly.
Significant issues - such as teenage pregnancy, religious fanaticism
and homosexuality - pervade the core of this movie. Add Culkin
smoking in a wheelchair and one humorous scene after another and
you've got a devilishly funny flick.
The other stuff: Evangelical Christians are treated too
simplistically, such as the character of Hilary Faye portrayed by
Mandy Moore. These characters are portrayed as one-dimensional to
better serve the purpose of humor in the movie, but are not always a
true reflection of what most evangelical Christians believe.
However, the movie does embrace a message of compassion and
acceptance of society's outcasts that is central to Christian belief.
The details: Rated PG-13 for strong thematic issues involving teens -
sexual content, pregnancy and mild language. Playing at Cinemark.
The final grade: A-
- Adam Stater, Marist High
