I just moved to Melbourne last year from the northeast region where I played
(snare drum) with many pipe bands.
Can you tell me what grade the City of Melbourne Pipe band is? How often do you
compete and how many jobs do you perform at throughout the year (on average).
I'm still trying to decide if I want to join a new band here or not. I still
have my snare drum, sticks and assorted supplies.
Hi jim, I'm George one of the Pipe corporals. Tim Ridner is our Drum Sargent and would be the one to really speak with. We are a different bread of Pipe band. We care about our music and like to have a good time when we play. We do local gigs about 6-8 times a year. We are debating whether to go back into a competition season since the changes in the competition rules. I will forward your information to Tim and I'm sure he will be in touch.

Hi Jim, I am David Spurlock, Pipe Major of our band. We would love to have you join us. The different breed of band George referred to in his email only means that we are not focusing on competition at the moment. We are a good grade 5 band who could easily be grade 4 if we so intended. Lately we have been working on adding an Albannach style drumming segment into our performance repertoire. It still needs work from the pipe and the drum section but we've been having great fun with it. You may want to check out the band this Saturday at the Space Coast Stadium in Viera. We will be performing at 3:15. Due to the holiday we will not be fielding our full band of 12 pipers and 6 drummers but we should have enough to have a good showing. I am looking forward to meeting you and hope you will consider becoming part of us.
Thank you very much for introducing yourself. I'll try to come to the performance at 3:15pm at the Viera stadium and we'll hopefully meet in person. If not, I'll come to practice on Sunday the 12th for a meet and greet and we'll take it from there.
It's interesting that you mention that you're adding a more (non-tradiditional) flare to the repertoire. Over the course of my drumming career (30+ years), I have been in over 7 pipe bands (both Irish and Scottish) and the drumming techniques have progressively become more and more "non-tradiditional" so it seems to be the common practice these days, which I think is great. To give you an example, please feel free to visit the website of the band which I left when I moved down here (Police Pipes and Drums of Waterbury). Go to http://www.policepipesanddrums.com and click on "Our Music". There you can see the listing of tracks from our latest CD and hear a sample of 3 song sets (Pub Set: Irish Eyes/Wild Rover/Whiskey In The Jar, The Gael, and Caber Feidh). My 2 favorites are Amazing Grace and our Drummer's Salute which I've attached to this e-mail for your pleasure. Our version of Amazing
Grace is a perfect example of how we did things "differently".
I look forward to meeting you in person.
Thanks again,
Jim Adams

Is the band performing at 3:15pm in prelude to the game at 7pm or is this a special performance just for the band?
Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim, we will not be meeting this Sunday. Our next practice will be the following Sunday the 12th. Do you know where we meet? Looking forward to meeting you. David
The band will be the opening fanfare for the Brevard Tea Party. From what I can glean from talking to the promoter, it is a protest against taxes and government spending. I am not interested in using the band to make any particular political statements but he assured me it would be a bipartisan event. There will be a two hour event following our performance. I will not be able to stay for it but hopefully we can meet up and talk.
Thank you for the update. I'll be there for the 3:15pm performance and hopefully we can chat a little afterwards.
Jim

If everybody shows who has said they would, I have 7 pipers not counting yourself. Myself, Annie, George Bell, Mike Dalton, Mark, Adam, and Janet. Jeffrey is going to be there to play base. This will be good exposure for the band. I would like to have as many there as possible. It's likely to not take much more than an hour out of your day.
As always, your revered friend and Piping God, David
Dave, I'm not going to be there. I have to 'babysit' 5 accounts at the race in Daytona all day on the 4th.
