WELCOME!
Welcome to the May 2nd edition of the Music Biz Academy digest!
Most exciting news this week? Don Henley's alternative to the
RIAA, the Recording Artists Coalition (RAC) is getting some great
attention in the press. Whether or not the RAC can create a
formidable opponent to the RIAA remains to be seen, but at the
very least artists concerned over sleazy and unfair recording
contracts are finally having their voices heard. The RAC
announced they will be opening offices in L.A. and D.C., and
currently boast 57 high profile members, including Billy Joel,
Eric Clapton and others. Check out the story link below for more
details on this fascinating development.

MOSES NEEDS YOU!
Record producer and industry watchdog Moses Avalon is seeking
artists in song-writing teams that are split in their performing
rights organizations. For example, one writer on a team is ASCAP,
and the other is BMI or SESAC. If you would like to participate
in a survey regarding the implications of this kind of
arrangement, contact Moses directly at MosesAvalon1@... .
While you're at it, don't miss Moses' very cool web site at

RADIO AIRPLAY 101: TRADITIONAL RADIO VS. THE WEB
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/radio/index.htm
How is web radio (and downloading) going to impact your efforts
in reaching mass numbers of people with your songs? Fortunately,
for those who have studied media there is an answer that we can
use. But you need to separate "radio" from "downloads" in order
to understand it.

GETCHRISTIANMUSIC.COM
http://www.getchristianmusic.com/
Here's a musician's community for independent Christian
musicians. Participants get their own web page with sound
samples, images, etc., and may be featured on GetChristianMusic's
MP3 radio station. Good points? Well, it's a Christian community,
working together to promote independent Christian music. Bad
points? The commission is rather hefty, as GetChristianMusic.com
takes 45% of your sale. Example, if you sell your CD retail for
$13.99, you get $7.69 of that.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR FANS
http://www.musicdish.com/mag/?id=3636
Stop trying to get a recording contract, you have no idea what's
inside one of those 100 page, single space contracts anyway.
Instead get to know who your fan is. Study who the people who
come to see your live shows, buy your records and merchandise,
and visit your websites. Those folks are the most valuable assets
you have outside of the great songs you have written. Article by
Christopher Knab.

WHAT IS "FAIR USE?"
http://www.musicdish.com/mag/?id=3583
Copyright law makes several limited provisions for copying
without first obtaining permission from the copyright holder.
These include situations where material is copied for the
purposes of review or criticism, educational use, or news
reporting. All these factors, specified in Section 107 of
copyright law, are to be used in determining whether a particular
situation qualifies as a fair use. Article by Jay Lickfett.

JUDGE ALL BUT GIVES UP POLICING NAPSTER
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/sci_tech/story_8451.asp
A federal judge overseeing the case against Napster Inc.
essentially threw up her hands and appealed for help today in
stopping the exchange of copyright songs. For the moment, her
ruling guarantees Napster users can continue downloading
copyright music at will. Major record labels want the online
music-swapping service to remove any copyright songs from its
Internet site, but removing the songs has proved exceptionally
difficult, since Napster users constantly make them reappear
under different file names.

watch its back. The Recording Artists Coalition — which counts
founder Don Henley, Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morissette among its
members — is making strides toward becoming a formidable
opponent.

REPORT SAYS MUSIC INDUSTRY SELLS VIOLENCE TO KIDS
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010424/ts/media_violence_dc_8.html
America's music companies were labeled the bad boys of the
entertainment world on Tuesday in a government report that said
they were still marketing songs with violent and lewd lyrics to
children. The Federal Trade Commission's study on the
entertainment industry and its marketing practices was a
follow-up to a scathing September report that accused the entire
sector of aggressively selling violent and sexually explicit
films, video games and music to kids.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA ) has sent
hundreds of letters to major Internet service providers and
universities, warning them that some people on their networks are
violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) by trading

STREAM DIGITAL MUSIC TO YOUR HOME STEREO
http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2708585,00.html
It's all fine and good to listen to your MP3 music on your PC or
portable player, but once your digital audio collection has
reached a critical mass, you're bound to want to listen to your
Napster favorites on that home stereo system you paid thousands
of dollars for. Well, if you have an Ethernet or Home PNA (Home
Phoneline Networking Alliance) network set up at home, you're in
luck: Digital audio receivers have arrived on the scene.
