WELCOME....
Welcome to the July 3rd edition of the Music Biz Academy digest!
It's been another fun two weeks for Napster. The service, while
still alive, has been struggling to find itself while pleasing
everyone. As a result, it's pleasing no one. While you can never
call anything truly dead on the internet, Napster appears to
getting weaker...and weaker...and weaker. Early Monday morning,
Napster began blocking all song transfers as it prepares it's
system for a pay-service upgrade. More information on that in the
news section below.

Rich DiSilvio specializes in what he calls "Visual Promotions"
which includes web design, CD cover art and multimedia. In
reviewing DiSilvio's portfolio we must say we were quite

touch, with a visually stunning presentation. Those of you
looking for a fantasy art/otherworldly look for your CD covers
check this out! Digital's CD cover art work would certainly make
your CD stand out on the rack! Clients include some names you may
have heard of: Alice Cooper, Yngwie Malmsteen, Krokus, Lita Ford,
K7, and more. Add'l services include computer illustration and

STATIONMP3.COM
http://www.stationmp3.com/
How would you like to upload your MP3 song files to one place and
have them automatically distributed to places like IUMA,
MusicBuilder, MP3.com, Vitaminic, BeSonic, and others? Even
better, how would you like to be able to check your listener
stats for all of these places from one centralized location?
That's what StationMP3.com offers to it's Platinum members -

NAPSTER'S LATEST BID TO STAY ALIVE: SHUTTING DOWN
http://www.mtv.com/sendme2.tin?page=/news/articles/1444905/20010702/index.jhtml
It took Napster's own new filtering technology to do what much of
the recording industry has been trying to do since 1999 — shut
the system down, if only temporarily. Early Monday morning,
Napster began blocking all song transfers. In a message to users,
Napster promised that the shutdown is only temporary and blamed
it on problems with the database used in its new screening
technology.

YAHOO LAUNCHES INTO WEB MUSIC
http://www.wired.com/news/mp3/0,1285,44884,00.html
The startup era in digital media ended Thursday when heavyweight
Yahoo moved to become the fourth major distributor of music
online. After years of struggling to develop a cohesive
entertainment delivery strategy, Yahoo (YHOO) said it would
purchase Launch Media (LAUN) for $12 million.

MUSIC WAS EASIER WHEN IT WAS FREE
http://www.wired.com/news/mp3/0,1285,44858,00.html
The first online subscription service that offers major label
music will launch near the end of the summer. Then a few months
later another subscription service will roll out. Then another.
And another. By the end of the year, no fewer than 11 companies
are expected to offer subscription services. None will offer
music from all five major labels. None will offer unlimited
listening. Many won't allow consumers to burn their music onto a
CD.

HIT LIST DWINDLES IN NEW NAPSTER SOFTWARE
http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,5093396,00.html?chkpt=zdnn_nbs_hl
Napster is funneling people to a new version of the software that
includes technology supposedly able to identify a song accurately
using a digital representation of its sound. When it released the
software last Friday night, the company touted it as a way to
release many previously blocked songs back into its network.
Readers, however, report that almost no songs are getting through
the network with the new software.

JUDGE PUTS AN END TO NAPSTER APPEAL
http://siliconvalley.internet.com/news/article/0,2198,3531_790981,00.html
Napster will not get another chance to lift an injunction that
prohibits the Redwood City-based company from allowing its users
to share copyrighted music files. An attorney for the Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA) confirmed the news saying
that the judge denied Napster's request Monday for a rehearing of
the music industry's landmark copyright lawsuit.

NAPSTER COULD PROVE A TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW
http://www.nationalpost.com/tech/story.html?f=/stories/20010615/592658.html
Two industry-backed Internet music services are expected to roll
out by the end of this summer, hoping to replace the hugely
popular free music-sharing Internet service that ran afoul of
copyright law. They are the products of a year dominated by
soul-searching, chest-thumping and high-profile lawsuits over who
gets to control the sounds of the Web. But can these pay services
succeed legally where Napster did illegally? Much is riding on
the answer.
