Welcome, subscribers to the April 1st edition of the Music Biz
Academy Digest!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT....
Last issue we told you about MusicCity.com's plans to start
promoting indie music through Morpheus, it's file-sharing tool.
We've followed up with Morpheus to find out more details, and
here's what we've learned:

The cost for artists to include their music on the Morpheus
network, will be $125 per song, or $495 for an entire 'album' of
songs (up to 12 songs). When you join the MusicCity.com roster,
8,000 – 10,000 copies of your song (or album) will be placed on
the MusicCity servers and from there it will be propagated into
the Morpheus P2P network where millions of users can download,
listen and have the opportunity to buy your music. Along with
your music, you'll be submitting pictures, a bio, a link to your
web site, and promo text to use for your 'description.'

Your pictures, bio, and links will be included, along with your
music, in a secure file-wrapper called 'CintoA,' a rules-based
security feature that allows you as the artist to decide how many
times a listener can preview your music before they are required
to purchase it. MusicCity recommends artists charge .99 per
single and/or an album for $8 U.S. Dollars. Artists will keep 70%
of the gross from sales, and checks will be sent out monthly.

The cost may be restrictive for many musicians, but those with
the money to invest certainly may want to look into this
opportunity. MusicCity appears very serious about this new
venture, and they certainly have the user-base to make it an
interesting investment.

We're going to be submitting our own music to Morpheus soon.
We'll keep you posted on our results.

'MAKING IT' IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS - AN ALTERNATE VIEW
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/alternateview.htm
As an independent musician you will find that many experts in the
music industry will be more than happy to feed you great morsels
of advice. Unfortunately, this advice can sometimes be exactly
what a budding musician does NOT need. Article by Graeme Kirk.

THE TRUTH ABOUT BARCODES
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/barcodes.htm
I see many places that offer one a "personal barcode" for a small
amount of money (which is illegal, by the way); or often a CD
manufacturing company will offer an artist a "barcode with your
OWN name" as part of the deal. But, let's talk about the ACTUAL
barcode number, all right? Article by Janet Fisher.

THE FUTURE OF MUSIC COALITION
http://www.futureofmusic.org/index.cfm
This fascinating web site features numerous articles and
commentaries on the state of the music industry, technology and
the evolving debate over intellectual property issues. One of the
stated goals of the Coalition is to educate musicians about the
critical issues shaping the industry. You'll find a large
selection of articles, news updates, a library of important
books, research areas, newsletters, and ideas for how you can
participate in the debate. Interesting reading.

GALARIS
http://www.galaris.com/
Galaris is an up-and-coming web/music hosting solution for
musicians. One thing we like about them is that they keep the
process simple. They'll set up a page for you for a flat fee of
$25, and they take $4 for each CD sale. You get paid immediately
when a CD sells - you don't have to wait until the end of the
month or until you hit a minimum amount in sales. And, Galaris
forwards the customer information to you so you know who bought
your CD. Galaris provides a number of other services as well,
including multimedia services, graphic design, and event
promotion.

SHORT RUN MUSIC
http://www.shortrunmusic.com/
Short Run Music specializes in, well, short runs - not just CD
Manufacturing, but promotion materials such as postcards and
flyers. What you get, for substantially less cost, is a quality
product, that looks and sounds professional. You can, for
example, get just 50 CDs done at a cost of $4 per CD - that's
$200 for a professional CD. The more CDs you buy, the less
expensive they are per disc. CD packages include full color
printing directly on disc, 4-panel (full color front and back)
folders, and full color tray card insert (full color, both
sides), assembled in jewel cases and shrinkwrapped. There are
other extras available, and of course other options for those who
want to do part of the job (such as folder insertion) themselves.
Short Run Music will even send you a single CD for your
inspection and approval before you run off a bunch. Short run
full color postcards and flyers are also offered at exceptional
prices. Very much worth a look.

http://mi2n.com/press.php3?press_nb=33162
Making a living in the music world can be a tough goal to
achieve. Many talented musicians go unnoticed because they don't
have the resources needed to display their talents. To help make
some of these life-long dreams come true, Jim Beam® Bourbon will
award another $100,000 in grant money in 2002 to unsigned artists
through the B.E.A.M. (Benefiting Emerging Artists in Music)

BILL GATES COULD PICK UP EMI FOR A SONG
http://www.forbes.com/home/2002/03/20/0320emi.html
Mariah Carey, as it turns out, is not the only person who no
longer works for EMI. Alain Levy, the music group's chief
executive, today announced layoffs amounting to almost a fifth of
his workforce. The stock moved higher on the news, but it remains
at anemic levels that reportedly are tempting Microsoft to
consider a bid.

GOODBYE NAPSTER, HELLO MORPHEUS
http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1107-861914.html
It's happening again. No sooner did the music industry
effectively kill Napster than a dozen imitators started vying for
its vacated throne. And now they're not swapping just music, but
movies, software, and any other content that can be condensed
down to 1s and 0s.

DUTCH COURT BACKS MUSIC SWAPPING
http://news.com.com/2100-1023-870396.html?tag=cd_mh
In a setback for efforts to halt copyright abuse, a Dutch appeals
court on Thursday told a technology company it could distribute a
software program that is designed to let people share music and
films on the Internet. The ruling in the case between Internet
software company Kazaa and Dutch music rights organization Buma
Stemra overturned a decision in November in favor of the music
industry.

NAPSTER TO REMAIN OFFLINE, COURT SAYS
http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article/0,,3_998431,00.html
As Napster continues to take it in the teeth from the Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA), the San Francisco 9th
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a ruling this week that will
keep the popular file-swapping music service offline until it
rids its service of all copyright-protected material.

NAPSTER PUTS OFF RELAUNCH
http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,51357,00.html
Napster has postponed its planned relaunch, saying the company is
taking some more time to make sure they get the very best deals
they can from major music labels before it reopens for business.
The company has not set another relaunch date but its chief
executive, Konrad Hilbers, said it will not reopen a
copyright-friendly Napster service for another nine months.

NAPSTER ALLOWED ACCESS TO RECORD LABELS' DOCUMENTS
http://www.nandotimes.com/technology/story/327242p-2759743c.html
Napster will get a closer look at documents from major record
labels that reveal the underpinnings of their business agreements
in forming two online music ventures, a federal judge ordered
Tuesday. The song-swapping network is looking for evidence of
copyright misuse to bolster its legal defense and limit damages
in the record labels' copyright infringement suit against it.

EMI CUTS MEAN 400 ARTISTS MAY BE SINGING THE BLUES
http://www.usatoday.com/money/media/2002-03-20-emi-cuts.htm
British music power EMI Group said Wednesday that it will slash
about 20% of its nearly 9,400-person workforce and dump about 400
acts from its roster in an effort to improve profits during an
industrywide slump. EMI is the No. 5 record company in the USA
with 9.3% of album sales so far in 2002, down from 11.2% in the
same period last year, according to Soundscan.
