-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hello everyone! My goodness, it's been a LONG time since I sent
out a newsletter! Well, despite the silence, I can assure you
I've been very much "here," and working very hard too, I might
add.
Here's what I've been up to...
Just over a year ago I launched an Internet radio station to
promote my music called "Whisperings: Solo Piano Radio."
(you'll find it at
http://www.solopianoradio.com if you're
interested.) Since the launch, the broadcast has taken off. We're
doing over 100,000 listening hours a month now, and we've already
signed our first syndication deal. On top of all this, I've been
organizing (and performing at) concerts to promote the
Whisperings broadcast across the country. All of this has taken
up a good deal of my time.
I must say, however, that it's been fantastic! We have over 50
piano artists involved in this joint effort, including some names
you might have heard of (David Lanz, Suzanne Ciani, Wayne Gratz).
I'll be performing a Whisperings showcase with David Lanz and
several other artists in January.
All of this just goes to show how you can use the Internet to
promote your music not only to thousands of people every day
ON-line, but also to many, many people OFF-line. When you get
your Internet presence working together with live performance,
they tend to feed off each other.
So as you can see, I've been a bit busy.
Despite all of this, I am hard at work on the next edition of my
book (How to Promote Your Music Successfully on the Internet)
which I hope to have ready by the years end.
I have also been making a lot of updates over at the Music Biz
Academy web site. There are TONS of new articles on the site.
I've included links to the most recent in this newsletter.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
First off, you GOTTA read this article, called THE LONG TAIL.
It's from Wired Magazine. It's long article, but is perhaps one
of the most in depth commentaries I've seen on the future of the
music business:
THE LONG TAIL
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.10/tail.html
Also, check out this article in PC WORLD magazine about recording
and promoting your own music. It's pretty basic, but they mention
yours truly in it, so I can't help myself:
THE HUMAN ELEMENT: RECORDING AND PROMOTING YOUR OWN MUSIC
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,117926,00.asp
And beyond these, here are a few other hand-picked news stories
I thought worth passing on...
MUSIC INDUSTRY FACES US RADIO PLAYLIST PROBE
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200410/s1226377.htm
New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who has already taken on
the investment banking, mutual funds and insurance sectors, has
served subpoenas against Universal Music, Sony BMG Music, EMI and
Warner Music requesting information on the companies'
relationships with independent promoters who serve as middlemen
between music companies and radio stations.
EDONKEY OVERTAKES KAZAA
http://tinyurl.com/4x6hf
Kazaa, once a top nemesis of record companies and movie studios,
appears to have lost its role as the world's most popular
file-swapping software, network watchers have said. According to
BayTSP, a California firm that monitors file-swapping networks on
behalf of entertainment companies, Kazaa rival eDonkey was the
most widely used peer-to-peer application last month. Kazaa's
lead on rivals has been sliding for more than a year.
APPLE ITUNES DOMINATES PAID DIGITAL MUSIC DOWNLOADS
http://www.mi2n.com/press.php3?press_nb=72499
More and more companies are working to gain a foothold in the
paid music download category; however, according to new data
released today by The NPD Group, Inc., early entry Apple iTunes
continues to dominate this market. Nearly 70 percent of music
files downloaded legally between December 2003 and July 2004 were
downloaded from iTunes. Napster's share for the same time period
was 11 percent, while MusicMatch, RealNetworks and Wal-Mart each
reached a six percent share.
CD BABY PAYS $10 MILLION TO MUSICIANS FOR CDS SOLD
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/cdbaby.htm
In case anyone tries to tell you that independent music has no
value, is small potatoes, is just "garage bands", or anything
else like that - you can tell them that CD Baby has now sold over
$10 MILLION in independent CDs. Have you signed up yet?

ARE YOU OVERLOOKING LIVE SHOW OPPORTUNITIES?
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/bb_liveshows.htm
Let me ask you ... What has to happen for a person to be
converted into being a fan of your music? There are a number of
possible answers, but at the most basic level, one thing has to
happen: The person must hear your music. Let's focus on that,
because even with all of the advancements in technology, live
performance continues to be one of the best ways to connect with
fans, sell CDs and prosper as an artist. Article by Bob Baker.
MUSICIANS AND VENUE OPERATORS: HISTORICALLY, AT ODDS
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/aw_venues.htm
Venue operators and musicians have historically been at odds. It
seems we have a love/hate relationship and each, at times, wants
to bite the hand that feeds us. After conducting interviews over
the last year online, in person and over the phone, I have come
to a basic understanding of what the rift is between musicians
and venues. Article by Annette Warner.
THE 6 RULES OF COMMERCIAL MUSIC SUCCESS
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/gf_6rules.htm
Over the years I have had many conversations with music artists
about commercial music, which usually leads to them disclosing
their disdain and hatred of it. Some refer to pop music (pop, as
in what’s popular now) as commercial music. Others think of
anything that is receiving heavy rotation on radio as commercial
music. Whatever their definition, one thing is often overlooked:
commercial music is the heart of the music industry which pumps
the blood that keeps it alive. Article by Gian M. Fiero.
THE X FACTOR: WHAT IS IT AND DO YOU HAVE "IT"?
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/gf_xfactor.htm
What exactly is the “X factor?” You hear professionals and
artists alluding to it, but you rarely hear anyone defining “it.”
If you are an aspiring music artist or an entertainer, it’s
important to know what "it" is because in the mind of the most
seasoned and powerful industry professionals, having “it” is what
determines if you are worth the investment of endless amounts of
time and money. Article by Gian M. Fiero.
THE "CREATIVE" YOU AND THE "BUSINESS" YOU
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/knab/articles/creativeyou.htm

'make it' and others don't for a long time. Here are some
thoughts on the subject... Article by Chris Knab
THE NUMBER OR RADIO STATIONS IN THE U.S.
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/radio/stations.htm
No conversation about music marketing would be complete without
the word RADIO rearing its ugly head time and time again. Few
songs sell well at retail without it. None sell millions without
it. You've got your CDs manufactured...now what can YOU do about
it? Article by Bryan Farrish.
CAN YOU HELP? AND PLEASE, NO HYPE!

A recent letter: "Can you help? Please, NO HYPE. Either yes or no
is fine. Would you GUARANTEE your success to me?" Response by MBA

ARTIST / BAND INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/knab/articles/artistinterview.htm
These questions are useful for any artist or band serious about
conducting their music careers as a business. Thoughtful, honest,
and detailed answers to these questions NOW will prepare you for
the questions when they come up in interview situations LATER and
will also aid you in writing bios, fact sheets, and press
releases. Article by Chris Knab.
I GET SO MANY CLUELESS LETTERS!
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/knab/articles/clueless.htm
I have been writing this and other columns for over 10 years now.
I post my email address on my website for potential clients to
reach me, so, I am not surprised that I get a lot of email
messages every day. Most of them are very polite ‘thank-you’
messages letting me know how much they appreciate all the free
articles and columns I have written, but I have a problem with
some of the messages I get, and the problem is getting worse
every day. Commentary by Chris Knab.
