-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone,

Are you keeping as busy as I am? Music promotion is an ongoing,
never-ending effort. For the last two and a half years, a good
deal of my time has been devoted to developing my own Internet
radio broadcast. Imagine having your own radio station to promote
your music on - one that thousands of people tune into every day.
That's what I set out to do.

The result is Whisperings: Solo Piano Radio, and it's been a huge
success. We're the #1 program on Live365.com right now, and the
show is serving well over a half-million listeners a month. On
average, 20,000 people a day tune in. You can tune in yourself at
http://www.solopianoradio.com if you like.

How did I do it? I started small and just kept growing it. Word
of mouth was a strong driving force (and still is). If you have a
great radio station, people get hooked, and they share it with
others. Most of my promotional work was on the front end, when I
first started the broadcast. Once I reached a certain point, the
momentum and enthusiasm of Whisperings listeners kept it going
and growing. Now most of my time is devoted to maintaining the
broadcast and to improving it.

While the success of the broadcast is obviously a good thing, it
has created some major challenges. For one, the station has grown
in popularity faster than I can keep up with financially. It
costs a lot of money to support all that bandwidth. I've had to
cap the station at 1500 simultaneous listeners in order to keep
the costs from spinning out of control. However, limiting the
number of simultaneous listeners means that once all those
listening spots are taken, it's much harder for new listeners to
tune in. In fact, they can't tune in until someone else has
dropped off. It's been a frustrating problem for both listeners
and myself.

The good news, however, is that I've found a solution - at least
for our devoted listeners. I've begun the process of setting up
my own servers for the broadcast, rather than using just
Live365's. This will keep my costs down in the long run. The
first server I'm setting up will be for a subscription-based,
commercial-free version of the broadcast. There's been a big
demand for this - listeners have been e-mailing me almost every
day asking for it, saying they'd be willing to pay to eliminate
the "commercials" that run asking for listener donations. Once
that is set up, for a small donation of $5 a month, listeners
will be able to tune in whenever they want from wherever they
want, get a commercial-free stream of music *and* a wider
selection and variety of music, too. If all goes well, I should
have this all in place by the end of the month. If you'd like to
help me beta test this system, you can tune in at
http://www.solopianoradio.com/pro_beta.htm . That version is
running off a test server and is free. When it goes live, it will
be a password protected, subscription-based stream.

At any rate, the ongoing development of Whisperings: Solo Piano
Radio is what has been consuming my time for the last many
months. It's why you haven't heard from me in so long via this
newsletter. However, despite my "busy"-ness with all this, I have
continued to add articles and resources to the
MusicBizAcademy.com web site. Links to a few of those are
included below.

I also just released the 2006 edition of my book, "How to Promote
Your Music Successfully on the Internet." In that, I devote an
entire chapter to the process of how to create your own online
radio broadcast. You can read all about it at
http://www.promoteyourmusic.com .

MARKETING YOUR MUSIC on MYSPACE.COM
I have also dived into the MySpace culture. I have found it to be
an exceptional way to build up my fan database. Did you know that
MySpace.com gets more page views than Amazon.com, eBay, and AOL?
It's amazing how big and popular this web site has gotten in its
short time of existence.

While I do cover the basics of MySpace in my book, I don't go
into as much detail as Bob Baker does in his terrific new report
on MySpace Music Marketing. He devotes 65 pages to the topic! I
just worked out a deal with Bob to offer his wonderful MySpace
Music Marketing guide to our visitors. If you're not promoting
your music on MySpace yet, you should seriously think about
starting. I have found it to be worthwhile. Read more about Bob's
report at http://www.musicbizacademy.com/bookstore/myspace.htm

And here's my space on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/davidnevue

In terms of music industry news, here are a few headlines that I
wanted to call out that I thought that would be of interest to
you as an independent artist.

First...

CD BABY SIGNS ARTIST DISTRIBUTION DEAL WITH SUPER D
You might have missed seeing this news, because I nearly did
myself. If you're a CD Baby artist, this is GREAT news because it
means that shortly your CD will be available by special order
at virtually any CD store in the country. Super D sells to over
1,300 retailers on a weekly basis and if you're a CD Baby artist,
your CD will be available for order from their catalog. Now when
a fan contacts you to ask if they can buy your CD in a local
store, you can give them the option of asking their local CD
retailer to order the CD straight from Super D. The news article
is at http://tinyurl.com/pzfxw and you can sign up for CD Baby at
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/cdbaby.htm

Did you read about the singer who set up her own webcast - a
"virtual world tour" - in her basement, and got a record deal
with RCA as a result? This is definitely a right place, right
time, right idea, right promotion kind of success story....

SINGER REACHES 70,000 VIA WEB CASTS, SIGNS WITH RCA
http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/6018.html

And finally, by the end of this year,
AMAZON.COM PLANS TO ENTER THE DIGITAL MUSIC MARKET
Read more about that at http://tinyurl.com/l8ypj

START A LABEL AND BUILD AND EMPIRE, PART 1
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/mg_startlabel1.htm
The traditional goal for many aspiring artists has always boiled
down to two words: Get signed. These magical words conjured
visions of stretch limos, screaming fans, endless bags of money…
but today's artists are a lot smarter. They now know that
"getting signed" seldom equals eternal bliss and security.
Artists have gradually realized in recent years that the
do-it-yourself model of putting out records and managing a career
from the grassroots can yield certain advantages. Article by Mike
Grebb

START A LABEL AND BUILD AND EMPIRE, PART 2
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/mg_startlabel2.htm
There’s nothing more difficult, time-consuming, frustrating and
masochistic than starting your own record label. Believe me, I
know. In addition to my job as resident mouthpiece here at Atlas
Plugged, I’m also a partner in BOS Music, a label that I started
with a few buddies about five years ago. Keeping BOS in the game
hasn’t been easy. But having all walked over hot coals together
at this point, we’ve become kindred survivors in the
small-business battlefield... Article by Mike Grebb

THE NEW RULES OF WRITING PRESS RELEASES

When do you write a press release? All the time. Press releases

specific editors. They can go out to tens of thousands of readers

PODCASTING MY TASTEBUDS INTO YOUR MIND
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/gm_podcasting.htm
It has been said recently that Podcasting is growing faster than
anything in history. To think that each and every one of us can
become a radio programmer and people can subscribe to our taste
in music is just simply amazing. One night, at about 2am when I
should have been asleep, I began setting up my own podcast, not
even knowing what it was, but ever so curious. Here's how I did
it. Article by Gilli Moon.

PREDICTING THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

WEB DESIGN 101 FOR RECORD LABELS (AND ARTIST'S TOO!)
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/kh_webdesign.htm
Websites have a very basic task -- to educate the public on just
what it is your company or your record label is all about, and
perhaps more important, it may also be a way of selling them
something. And if you're selling, you must be clear just what it
is you have for sale -- whether it's music, a service, or
something else. Article by Keith Holzman.

HOW TO BUILD A MUSIC WEB SITE THAT SELLS
http://musicbizacademy.com/bookstore/musicwebsite.htm
This book was written by one of my own clients (Mihkel Raud), who
bought my book "How to Promote Your Music Successfully on the
Internet" and applied it successfully to his music career. He
sold over 3000 CDs on the Internet in just 9 months! He's a
perfect example of what happens when someone really WORKS at
promotion. His book is a fun and informational read. For those of
you who may be wondering, Mihkel's book does not conflict with my
own. Mihkel's book focuses *specifically* on creating a web site
designed to sell, whereas my book focuses on promotion and
distribution to the Internet at large. Together, the two books
make a great one-two punch. $19.95, instant download.
