Hello everyone,
I hope you are all doing well. I am currently in the midst of a
two week concert tour of the Midwest, so I'm experiencing a nice
stretch of concert performances - half of them house concerts -
my favorite kind! Over the last three years, one of my most
unexpected and happy achievements has been using the Internet to
create and book my own concert tours. What an adventure! There's
a link to fine article on house concerts below called HOUSE
CONCERTS: BUILDING YOUR FAN BASE ONE LIVING ROOM AT A TIME. Read
that. I also cover the topic in my book, "How to Promote Your
Music Successfully on the Internet." You can read about that at
http://www.promoteyourmusic.com
But first, here are a few headlines from recent weeks that I
thought that would be of interest to you, my fellow independent
artists.
MYSPACE: MEET THE BAND, BUY THE SONG
http://tinyurl.com/lownn
Technology is taking the middleman out of the music business,
giving artists a bigger array of tools to get their songs in the
MP3 players of potential fans around the world. Now MySpace is
adding a music-store feature that will allow artists, labels and
the site itself to cash in on the popularity of those songs. The
new feature will allow musicians -- whether they are backed by a
record label or not -- to sell songs directly from their MySpace
profile pages. The service is in trial and will be available
broadly by the end of the year.
MUSIC INDUSTRY GOES AFTER GUITAR TAB SITES
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060814-7498.html
First it was services that provided music, then it was sites that
offered lyrics. Now the music industry has trained its legal guns
upon guitar tablature, and several of them have already been
shuttered.
THE RIAA VS. JOHN DOE,
A LAYPERSON'S GUIDE TO FILESHARING LAWSUITS
http://tinyurl.com/emchs
Ray Beckerman of Recording Industry vs. The People put together
an article that explains how the RIAA's legal team find, obtain
records on and sue ISP account holders who may or may not have
ever been users of P2P applications. I decided to take a stab at
rewriting it in something closer to English than lawyer. In hopes
that it would be more accessible. So, with thanks to Ray
Beckerman, let's take a look at The RIAA vs. John Doe, in what I
hope serves as a layperson's guide to filesharing lawsuits.
NY SINGER BUILDS BIG FOLLOWING WITH WEB EXPOSURE
http://www.theepochtimes.com/news/6-8-8/44695.html
Inside a disheveled Long Island beach cottage on a muggy summer
day, Jamie Kristine Seerman sings into a microphone, strumming a
battered guitar, recording on a computer a song that she hopes
will be a hit. She has no financial backing or marketing plan,
but with the help of new technology, the 25-year-old who performs
as Jaymay has quickly graduated from Manhattan open-mike nights
to become a folk music darling. "I've been offered conventional
contracts from major record labels and very indie-friendly,
unconventional contracts," Seerman said during a break from
recording. "They have offered me everything I could want." But
with the music industry in flux because of the Internet, iTunes
and inexpensive recording, she said that for now she would rather
maintain control of her work.

FINDING TRUTH THROUGH STAGE PERSONAS
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/gm_stagepersonas.htm
Developing an "act" is more than just putting a good CD together.
It's about the way the musicians play (live), the clothes they
wear on stage, the way they relate to the audience, how they
stand on stage, the patter in between songs,.. the whole "live
stage persona." Article by Gilli Moon.
GOING POSTAL ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/bb_goingpostal.htm
"Dear Bob, I am sooooo tired of the music industry as it stands
now. Everywhere my band goes and performs, people flock to our
shows. They love us and they all have the same feeling: 'Ya'll
should be on radio and TV,' etc. However, the powers that be
continue to force feed that garbage that's out there to people
and it frustrates me. What am I supposed to do? I can't even get
"industry" folks to return my phone calls. I'm about to go postal
on the music industry!" This question addressed by Bob Baker
HAVING TWO EARS
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/eb_twoears.htm
As a record producer and A&R man on the French music scene, I
always wonder why artists hardly ever think about why they have
two ears. Obviously, it has a lot to do with successful
communication, but communicating what? Article by Eric Barouti.
HOUSE CONCERTS: BUILDING YOUR FAN BASE ONE LIVING ROOM AT A TIME
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/mg_houseconcerts.htm
House concerts are predicated on the notion that the most
intimate listening-room on the planet might just be home, sweet
home. A fan invites friends to attend the show, requests a modest
donation to the artist and maybe makes an offer of alcohol or
food to the collective pot. People eat. People drink. People sit
down to hear some great live music. And because the Artist eats,
drinks and shmoozes with the audience, merch sales and fan
mailing lists increase dramatically. Go figure. Article by Mike
Grebb.
HOW TO "FIX" THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/bb_fixit.htm
Changing the music industry is not unlike trying to change where
and when the sun rises every morning. You can expend all the
anger and energy you can muster, but the sun is still going to do
its thing -- blissfully unaware that you're even unhappy with it.

INDIE ARTISTS MEET CLEAR CHANNEL EXECS
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/gman_clearchannel.htm
"What does it cost to get a record on the charts?" The question
was directed to Mike McVay, programming consultant to about 400
radio stations owned by media giant Clear Channel. A hush fell
over the audience, as this was a piece of information that could
determine the fate of independent artists everywhere... Article

MAKE A MUSIC VIDEO IN 5 EASY STEPS
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/mg_makeavideo.htm
Music videos don't need to be expensive or glitzy these days. In
fact, fans often appreciate an underground feel that makes them
feel closer to the artist. "I don't think for an independent
artist that it's practical to spend a boatload of money to
compete with the majors," says big-time producer Marcus "DL"
Siskind, In fact, Siskind says artists are sometimes better off
going beyond the traditional music video... Article by Mike Grebb
MUSIC BIZ FUTURE SHOCK

You know the story. There are huge cultural and economic shifts
taking place in the music business. One of the biggest changes
involves the evolution of the tech-savvy, modern music consumer.
This is crucial to your future success with music, so read
carefully:... Article by Bob Baker
MUSIC FOR FILM AND TV: CAN YOU TALK THE TALK?
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/sf_filmtvtalk.htm
I've worked in film and video for the last several years and have
always been the one to place most of the music in commercials and
TV shows I work on. What's surprised me throughout my career is
discovering some musicians who know how to talk the talk, and
some who don't. So how can I tell? What do I hear? Article by
Susan Finch.
SELLING YOUR MUSIC ONLINE - A REALITY CHECK
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/internet/101_realitycheck.htm
I am often asked how much money a person can really make selling
music online. I hear both extremes, both from artists who think
they'll use the Internet to make it rich, and others who don't
believe anyone can make any money online selling music. The truth
is somewhere in between. Article by David Nevue.
SMART MARKETING: BUILDING A FANBASE
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/cs_fanbase2.htm
"Once I have a subscriber in my database, it is like gold dust,
and provided they really want to be on that list, the chances of
converting them into a sale when a new album comes out are pretty
high. And with this in mind I started thinking, "Gotta get more
on my list, gotta get more on my list...but how do I do
that?".... Article by Chris Standring.
THE POWER OF TOOTING YOUR OWN HORN
http://www.musicbizacademy.com/articles/dn_poweroftoot.htm

business side of the music. But hey, it's called the "music
business" for a reason you know. So I'm gonna show you some ways
to make it fun, instead of it seeming like work. I'm going to
show you a perfect way to get other people to do most of the work

BROADSKY: NEW YORK'S LOWEST PRICED LAW FIRM
http://www.lawyer79.com/music/
Having never used their services, we can't necessarily vouch for
these guys. However, the price is right, and if you're in need of

different kind of music law firm. We know that young musicians

are about 70 to 80% lower than the average at only $79 per hour.
With us you get the same experience and better service without
any pretense.
