MP3'S NEW FRONTIER: CARS

market catering specifically to MP3-loving motorists is just now

RECORD LABELS SCOFF AT NAPSTER'S $1 BILLION OFFER

Napster's offer to the music industry of a $1billion payment over
five years met with a cool reception today. Industry experts had
predicted that the offer would not come close to covering the
amount that Sony, Universal, EMI, Warner and BMG believe they are
owed by Napster for the copyright violation caused by its users
copying songs from each other for free. Now the record labels
have confirmed that view. Universal Music was the first of the
Big Five labels to respond to Napster's offer.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI)
has been waging a battle against Belgian Napster users over the
last few months. Adrian Strain, a spokesperson for the
federation, Strain said the IFPI started with a list of 12,000
Napster users in Belgium, whose e-mail addresses were expanded to
include postal details by staff within IFPI's Belgian operation.

put forth a two-tiered pricing plan for users. Napster said it

The music industry is developing software that will automatically
detect people who are illegally swapping songs over the Internet
-- and it is prepared to pass the information onto the police.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI),

In the new Napster, which the company says will be launched "as
soon as possible," users will still be able to swap MP3 files
ripped from their own CDs. But Napster will add a new "protection
layer" to MP3s as they move from one user's computer to another,

The record industry poured a little more fuel on the online
piracy wars Friday, blaming a steep decrease in CD singles sales
in 2000 on unauthorized Internet downloads. Shipments of singles
fell by nearly 40 percent last year, after relatively flat growth

America said.
