Hi everyone, Philip and I have been working for about 2 years on a project
that combines music and Kabbalah, and have now brought out a CD based on
this, called 'Songs of Eden'. As the project evolved, we took the music to a
number of audiences, and were really excited by their responses.

Now that the CD is done, we are taking it out on the road this autumn to
perform the full sequence of songs and meditations as evening concerts.

Kabbalah, properly understood, is embedded in ancient Jewish tradition,
teachings from the Torah, and the ritual cycle of the Jewish year. Philip
and I are both members of an active North London Jewish Renewal community
that is, in turn part of a global Jewish Renewal movement that has returned
to the earth-centred roots of Judaism that regard energy-consciousness and
the mystical as integral to spiritual experience. Kabbalah provides one of
the oldest maps of human consciousness and the universe that we have, and
has strong correspondences with, for example, the chakra system and
cosmologies that honour the four (and six) directions.

Philip Clouts and Alexander Massey have woven together elements of the
Jewish musical tradition with their expertise in jazz and classical music to
create a unique song cycle of voice and piano that takes us into direct
experience of the mystical, poetic core of Kabbalah.

Philip is well versed in the ways of the kabbalah. Since he first learned to
meditate over 20 years ago, he has studied many texts of this ancient
system, and spent time with a number of the key teachers who have devoted
their lives to the subject. Philip is also well known here and abroad
through his work as a pianist in performances (including WOMAD, Glastonbury
and Ronnie Scott's) and recordings with world music groups Zubop
("...luxuriant, exotic...irresistable" - Dave Gelly, The Observer ) and
Klezmania and his jazz group the Philip Clouts Trio ("deft, lively,
intensely rhythmic piano" Chris,Parker, Jazz Review).

Alexander has performed internationally as a versatile solo vocalist and
instrumentalist in the classical, opera and folk worlds - from the Salzburg
Festival, to Sydney, and the UK ("Eloquent ... Alexander Massey projected a
honeyed tenor line" Gloucestershire Echo; "Alexander Massey was excellent."
Hugh Vickers, The Independent), performing at the Guernsey Festival of Folk
and Blues, and singing regularly in a duo with the violinist David Roth from
the Allegri Quartet.
