Lighting Up Forgotton Faces
One quarter of Israel’s aged are immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Some 24 per cent
of all elderly people live under the poverty line. Scarred by the memories of the atrocities they
endured during the Holocaust, living under communist regimes and in concentration camps,
the aged population in Israel are now left to battle poverty alone, in a country gripped by
ongoing conflicts. To meet this growing need, Meir Panim, the largest supplementary welfare
services agency in Israel, established in 2000, provides food shopping cards,
to Holocaust survivors under the poverty line across Israel.
