I just spoke to Michael Parr of the Salem National Historic Site about
the performance schedule for this weekend's 17th Annual Salem Maritime
festival. He was not sure if the schedule would be published in the
local Salem newspaper. However, there will be programs at the festival.
Since I was trying to write the list down as Michael dictated it,
there may be spelling mistakes:
Saturday:
10:00 Michael O'Leary and friends (I did not get the name of the
group)
11:00 Geoff Kaufman (from Mystic)
12:00 Poor Richard's Penny
1:00 Danny Spooner
2:00 Ye Mariners All (We know John Roberts won't be part of the
group this weekend)
3:00 Tiaras (sp?)
4:00 New England Rhythm Collection
5:30 Jambalaya Jazz Band (start time approximate)
Sunday:
12:00 Tiaras (sp?)
1:00 Danny Spooner
2:00 Ye Mariners All
3:00 Daisy Nell & Capt. Stan
4:00 New Bedford Harbor Sea Shanty Chorus
5:00 Pub Sing (not part of the official festival) @
O'Neill's Pub & Restaurant, 120 Washington Street, Salem
I have a lot of fun gigs coming up in August. Many chanteys will
be sung at the shows listed below!
For those of you in Massachusetts
a house concert in Rowley and another MIT Chantey Sing. If you are in Maine do stop in at the MaineMaritimeMuseum for one of their family picnics. Bring a
meal to enjoy at their picnic tables on the banks of the mighty KennebecRiver.
Chanteys and a stunning view, who could ask for more?

Does anyone have photos of the last chantey sing? We would love to have them
posted to the
Yahoo! group site. If you're willing to do this yourself, it's very easy:

If you're more comfortable with email, you can email them to me

will post them. Look forward to seeing your photos soon!

As requested, I've posted some of the photos I took at the July shanty
session at MIT. The photos aren't great - I only had my little
camera, and the lighting there is challenging - but they do give a
sense of the session, I think. Lynn - I think I made an album for the
July session and a sub-album for my photos (new to Yahoo groups) - I
know other folks had cameras there, so wasn't sure how you wanted to
handle that. Feel free to rearrange them any way that seems to work
for you.
Thanks,
Judy

Going to a chantey sing? A maritime festival? Have a sea music gig? Please
update the group
calendar! I have been busily adding events I'm aware of for the fall, which will
also help us
schedule future chantey sings and minimize conflicts where possible.
Massachusetts events
have highest priority for scheduling the MIT sing, but let's say the group range
is a day's
drive from Boston: NY, CT, RI, MA, NH, VT, ME, and perhaps eastern Canada.
While you're at it, where are the most important sites for sea music in the
Northeast? Add
some URLs to our Links section for venues and other organizations of interest to
sea
musicians. I've started with a few examples: add your descriptions of what this
link has to
offer.
Help us build a magnet site for chanteys in New England and the Northeast.
What's your sea
music calendar look like? What are your favorite bookmarks?
Thanks,
Lynn
Great job here. Just wondered if you have Don Duncan on your email list.
dduncan@... He has a wealth of information on sea music
at his own website and may have ideas for this group site.

Does anybody know whether the Portsmouth Maritime Festival is scheduled to happen this fall? If so, any/all information would be very helpful. Jeff Warner told me that Tom Hall and Lynn Schultz (not sure how she spells her name) were the organizers this year, but I e-mailed them a month or so ago, and I haven't heard back.

Hi April and others,
I don't have much more info than you do. When I saw Jeff Warner at
Summerfest, he said that the festival was going on. However, Jeff was
no longer actively involved in the organization. Peter Contrastano,
the other principal organizer is now in North Carolina.
When I just checked Peter's site: http://www.folkhorizons.org/, he had
a link to the festival, with the date of 24-25 September.
Check it out.

Because September is racing season at the MIT Sailing Pavilion, we will be
exploring the
waterfront across the harbor for our September sing. Kudos to David Kessler and
the MIT
Nautical Gallery for finding us this new venue.
Piers Park has a sailing center and a greenway on the pier, featuring stone
gazebos
dedicated to the original Noddle's Island and to Donald McKay. Bonus points to
anyone
who comes prepared to tell us--or sing us--more about either one!
Around us will be the annual East Boston Harborfest, and we will encourage
festival
participants to join us. Our regular singing session begins at 1:30 to
accommodate the
Harvestfest September 11 Memorial at 1:00.
Piers Park is a short walk from Maverick T, and we'll send an update as we learn
more
about available parking. See you in East Boston on Sept. 11!

There will be many
opportunities to sing chanteys with me in September. Details are listed below.
CDBaby.com has set up a
special gallery of albums by
artists donating all profits to the Red Cross. I am one of the many
participating artists. Visit www.cdbaby.com.
Fred Gosbee & Julia
Lane (Castlebay),
Arlo Guthrie, The Poxy Boggards, and a host of local MA talent are
participating.
I won’t be able to
come down for the MIT Chantey sing on 9/11 because I will be performing at a
benefit for the ChocolateChurch in Bath, the
City of Ships. Very sad to miss the sing, but I
couldn’t turn down this opportunity. I was part of the first group that
performed at the ChocolateChurch back in 1977. They are raising money for much needed
repairs so I can continue to perform there for another 30 years.
Monday 9/12 I will be the
feature at TCAN’s open mic. Bring a song and sign up to play and
come prepared to sing a long on some chanteys.
Sunday 9/18 is a house
concert at the home of Chuck Hall in Rowley, MA.
This should be a lot of fun. Please do reserve a space soon and plan to
arrive early for the potluck before the concert. I am planning on
bringing my famous Uncle Bailey’s Toll House cookies! Also, the older
of my two Guild twelve strings is now back from MockingbirdMusic with a new
bridge and it sounds fabulous. Both of them will be with me for
this show. No plastic guitar for this gig!
September 24& 25th
it is hard to know where to be because we have both the Portsmouth Maritime
Folk Festival and the Boston Folk Festival. I will be performing at the
PMFF, but will also be at the BFF on Saturday afternoon at the FSSGB table.
Safe bet there will be a chantey raid.
Please support local
music and come out to a show!

Hi All,
For those of you who weren't at today's Chantey Sing, at the Piers
Park Harvestfest, you missed a great sing. We met in a gazebo on a
pier in Boston harbor. The singing was superb, as always. The view of
Boston harbor was fabulous, with many boats and ships passing in the
background.
Just to make the weekend of 23-25 September crazier than it already
was, with the Boston Folk Festival and the Portsmouth Maritime
Folk Festival, I just found out about another festival that weekend.
The New Bedford Working Waterfront Festival appears to have a
fantastic lineup.
You can find much more information about the festival, including
performer bios and the schedule, on their website:
http://workingwaterfrontfestival.org/
The Working Waterfront Festival is free.
The performers include:
The Beans
Gordon Bok
Richie Canastra & Company
Jon Campbell
Culture*Park
Gary Fish and the Bottom Feeder Band
Tom Goux
Grupo Fuerza Quichelence & Tipico Mayan Dancers
David Jones & Heather Wood
Cindy Kallet
Geno Leech
New Bedford Harbor Sea Chantey Chorus
The Ivo Pires Band
The Providence Wholebellies
John Roberts and Tony Barrand
Rum Soaked Crooks
The Souls of the Sea Band
Tesseract
TLC
Vestafor
Ana and Jose

"I handled her, I dandled her,
And found to my surprise,
She was nothing but a fire ship,
Rigged up in a disguise.
She had a dark and a rolling eye,
And her hair hung down in ringalets.
She was a nice girl, a decent girl,
But one of the rakish kind."

We had a splendidly rakish demonstration by Boston Harbor's own Fire Ship this
weekend.

"Three Sheets to the Wind", a group made up of Schooner Adventure crew

Fame sailing out of Salem. Please join us Wednesday September 28, at
5:45PM at Pickering Wharf (vessel leaves promptly at 6PM). $25 per
adult. Log on to www.SchoonerFame to see photos of previous sails.
This is a great time of year on the water, don't get left at the dock.
Sounds great. Where do I sign up? Also, does leaving Cambridge at 5:00
sound right w.r.t. traffic, etc?

Unfortunately, we have to postpone the Chantey Sail slated for Wednesday evening due to a scheduling conflict. We very much hope to reschedule the sail for a Wednesday in October. Stay tuned!
