MELODIC RHYTHMS -- a Native American Flute Circle; Morris Plains, NJ
Date: Sunday, April 24, 2005
Time: 3:00pm-5:00pm
MELODIC RHYTHMS -- a Native American Flute Circle; Morris Plains, NJ
~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of the keys to tasteful improvising within a drum circle is to be able to hear and imagine simple melodies within the drumbeats surrounding you. What happens when we reverse this process, and listen for rhythms within simple melodies?
Come and help explore. We will apply easy drum circle techniques to create a playful flute choir, which is sensitive & faithful to the underlying beat!
What to Expect:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Native American flutes with their beautiful yet simple scales are extremely accessible to beginners; so newbies welcome! If you've got flutes, bring them, but plenty will be available. A blend of flute circle and drum circle enthusiasts will attend -- bring your experience and curiosity. We will use light timbre rhythmic accompaniment as a base: the heartbeat. But emphasis will be upon the flutes: the breathing lungs.
Part of the session will be devoted towards playing within a simple Southern U.S. blues call and response structure. We will also use pattern games to build up listening and playing together, as well as warm-ups exhaling long tones. Another exercise will involve simulation of early morning forest bird calls. As usual within flute circles, there will be plenty of time for show-and-tell about various flutes and an informal sharing of techniques, songs, fingering, and other sorts of de-mystification. (Or is it re-mystification?)

What you will learn…geared toward those who have little or no experience, Mark will cover the basics of playing a Djembe (pronounced “gem bay”). He will teach the three sounds (base, tone, slap), the proper way to hold the drum, as well as the history of the instrument. He will also teach a basic rhythm.
Benefits of drumming…Apart from being incredibly fun and providing an atmosphere that encourages social interaction and engagement, research has shown that people who consistently drum also experience the following health benefits:
Alleviation of anxiety
Improvement in mild depression
Improvement in chronic pain disorders
Inspiration
Provides a release for stored up energy
The list goes on and on…in fact, a neurologist by the name of Dr. Barry Bittman (http://www.mind-body.org), along with his research team, has shown that specific group drumming increases the disease-fighting capacity of white blood cells…natural killer cells that seek out and destroy cancer and virally infected cells. Pretty cool, huh?
