Demo and discussion of basic fundamental origins of African drumming and traditions of the drum - telling the "Story of the Fire" within the drum. Explore the language of the vital instrument of the Afrikaans through the rhythms of the drums. You will learn the techniques of playing. This is a beginner's workshop.
Your instructor, "Griot-Warrior", Adisa Olubayo Bankole, is a performing arts-in-education professional - masterful African drummer, poet and storyteller. A soldier of education and lover of entertainment, he has extensive experience in the the theatre as a producer, director and choreographer. He has worked with the Paper Mill Playhouse, Umoja Afrikan Dance Co., Burundi African Dancers, Guardians Drummers & Poets, The Center for Modern Dance/Education in Hackensack, NYU Medical Center, Tusk Institute, NYC Public Schools, Newark's First Night, African American Festivals and more . . . .

Come explore drumming and percussion in a meditative atmosphere of fun, openness and spirituality where beginners are welcome and everyone (including musicians) have a great time. No musical training is necessary! We supply drums, but you are encouraged to bring your own drums and percussion instruments.
When drumming, everyone in the group can communicate at the same time by listening and responding sensitively, generating a joyous feeling of unity and power. This is our fifth year, and we really have fun!!

This circle has jamming and dancing, and it is also a meeting where some West African, Afro Cuban, and
Brazilian rhythms are taught.
Extra drums are usually available, and no previous drumming experience is required as beginners are
always heartily welcomed!
