The Probe Louisville website with a new and exciting feature. It is
called News Headlines.
Sure sounds boring or normal but how about having the headlines
delivered to your workstation automatically as they are released - not
spam - real news that you subscribe to (or unsubscribe from) and want to
hear.

Well it is now a reality. We have added a RSS feed to the Probe
Louisville website.
OK I hear you asking - What is RSS?

Please bear with me while I explain.
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a lightweight XML format designed for
sharing headlines and other Web content. Think of it as a
distributable "What's New" for the site.
Originated by UserLand in 1997 and subsequently used by Netscape to fill
channels for Netcenter, RSS has evolved into a popular means of sharing
content between sites (including the BBC, CNET, CNN, Disney, Forbes,
Motley Fool, Wired, Red Herring, Salon, Slashdot, ZDNet, and more). RSS
solves myriad problems webmasters commonly face, such as increasing
traffic, and gathering and distributing news.
RSS can also be the basis for additional content distribution services.
Ala a News Service - this is what we are using it for.

It is a bit complex to discuss here but if you want to know more do a
google search on RSS and read about it.

Basically , what it is is a web page that is able to feed information
to RSS Reader software on peoples workstations according to a schedule
defined by the recipient. ( It can also be displayed on a web site
which is one option we have implemented)

The recipient installs reader software onto their PC and this reader
then can be set to automatically obtain the latest news on a schedule
and make it available to the recipient. The reader software can either
be stand alone software or an add-in to your favourite email package. I
already use NewsGator in Outlook for other RSS feeds and it is
brilliant.

We have put a few links to RSS readers that we have found to work well.
But there are plenty out there on the internet.

Check out the Louisville web site for this new feature, download your
RSS Reader software and be kept informed about what is happening at
Louisville.
