RE: [NZbbshop] 'Four' may not be performing at 2005 NZABS convention

Yes - Four will not be competing, as one of their members will be
overseas - this from the singer in question, who told me yesterday in
Palmerston Nth, where he was directing the winning YMIH chorus.

So... going round the country, there were a few quartets scoring in the
60s, but none clearly in the 70s.

(1) Central Region Contest, Wellington:
415 69% FUSION (Harbour Capital)
390 65% RESONANCE (Vocal FX)
363 60% VOCAL ACCORD (Harbour Capital, Chapter at Large)
338 56% JUST FOR NOW (Harbour Capital)
325 54% OVER FORTE (Bay Harmony)
319 53% THE RAZOR'S EDGE (Harbour Capital)
308 51% WWW . DOC (?)

(2) Southern Region Contest, Dunedin:
418 69% CHECKPOINT (Cant'y Plainsmen)
414 69% T H B (Cant'y Plainsmen)
386 64% PAST TIME (Cant'y Plainsmen)
331 55% AT LAST (Cant'y Plainsmen)
324 54% CHORD ON BLUE (Highland Harmony)

(3) Northern Region Contest, Rotorua
Does anyone have the results?

(4) Young Singers in Harmony contest, Palmerston North
In the past, prizewinners in this contest have been invited to sing at
NZABS nationals. Also, I understand that Blue Tak's performance on the
show was evaluated by the judges for qualification purposes. I'd think
that Blue Tak and this year's prizewinners would all be in the 60s,
though I haven't got scores handy. So, the four possibilites from
Palmerston North are:

1st - SOUND WAVES (Tawa College)
2nd - GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS (Aotea College)
3rd - THE FLATMATES (Takapuna Grammar School)

evaluated - BLUE TAK (ex-Takapuna Grammar)

===============
There are no Musical Island Boys-level quartets in the field this year,
but I think the general level is rising. In June, I judged Music in the
equivalent contests in Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney. The main difference
between here and Australia is that we are a bit short on really low
scoring quartets!

My impression is that the contest is pretty much open this year. There
were several quartets who competed with limited rehearsal time, or
recent personnel changes that were yet to settle, and this all showed.
The contest will probably go to whoever makes best use of time between
now and Napier!

Cheers,
David Brooks
