So, I've just heard that Waikato Rivertones won the Division AA competition
at IES... scores below.
Division A Results:
5 - 1129 - Profile
4 - 1166 - Bathhurst Panorama
3 - 1209 - Carolina Style
2 - 1249 - Voices Unlimited
1 - 1293 - Alba Show
Division AA Results:
5 - 1168 - Gateway
4 - 1170 - Vienna-Falls
3 - 1284 - Midwest Crossroad
2 - 1286 - Farmington Valley
1 - 1312 - Waikato Rivertones
1312 is scored with a double panel, so it would be about 656 at the normal
Region 35 contest... not too bad!

You mean the whole caber tossing, Scottish heritage thing? The only reason
I brought it up is cause I think it's kind of obvious... just saying there
might have been some better choices made for how to draw it, or even other
ideas/options that could have been better and less "provocative"...

➢ The scores from Wellington are HUGE! It's hard to believe that YWIH quartets
and choruses would be scoring in the 600's (700s for Tawa!) if they were in the
SAI competition. Were they also judged more generously as well? I do not believe
that the judges up here did so, but will check.
The judges were using the YWIH scoresheets, which are quite different from the
standard Sweet Adelines ones. At the Rising Star contests, there have been
performances earning 100%, but the same quartets have then gone on to compete at
SAI regionals and scored at B- or B level. The training given by Jackie Hall a
couple of years ago gets drawn upon with level-setting, but there are no
levelling tapes for the YWIH contests, hence no way of ensuring consistency
between centres.
To get an idea of where the scores lay – if we compare the 2006 and 2007
National finals with the 2007 Wellington regional, we see with quartets:
Abrachordabra: 349 - 2nd (2006), 346 (2007)
Strike Four: 353 - 1st (2005), 339 - 4th (2006), 332 (2007)
Both quartets sang much better in the 2007 Regional than at the 2005 or 2006
National finals. My feeling is that to get scoring parity you'd have to add 30
pts to the 2007 Regional score.
Looking at choruses:
Maiden Tawa: 376 (2005), 379 (2006), 356 (2007)
ACBC: 374 (2005), 368 (2006), 340 (2007)
Neither chorus was as well-honed here as it was at National finals, so I
wouldn't want to draw too many conclusions about scoring consistency.
Cheers,
David

YMIH
Singing: Tony Roberts
Presentation: Dave Jackman
Music: Paul Hopley
YWIH
Sound: Jill Rogers
Music: Melody Lowe
Expression: Margaret Thomas
Showmanship: Sheryl Willis
No wildcard recommendations were specified on the day... however I was
multitasking away and didn't exactly ask them to make recommendations!
Will do so and let you know.

Thanks, Angela!
12 schools participating – good going!
Just wondering - who were the judges? Were the men’s judges scoring at
the standard BHS judging level, or were they following the practice of
the YMIH national and Wellington contests by judging everything 10
points more generously (so a 60 performance would be scored a 70, for
instance)? And were there any recommendations for wildcards?
Also, does anyone have the results from the Christchurch or Waikato
contests yet? I think Napier has their contest next weekend.
By the way, below are the results from the Wellington contests. All the
qualifying spots went to schools within 3 km of central Porirua (Aotea,
Tawa, Mana, Bishop Viard), except the spot for the much improved Queen
Margaret's College.

Hi all,
Just wanted to say thanks to all the people who helped in their
various ways to make the 2007 Auckland Regional YSIH comps the
success it was.
Fortunately Auckland had power this year (last year we had a power
cut) so things went much, MUCH better... the results are posted in
the 'FILES' section, and are also available from
www.southcitysoundz.com/ysih.html.
On a related matter, Auckland is hosting a fundraiser concert for
Vocal FX:
Date: Monday 25 June, 2007, 7:30pm start
Venue: Bruce Mason Centre, Takapuna, North Shore City
Tickets: Adults $25.00; Concession (Under 18 and over 65) $20.00
Available from Ticketek -
http://premier.ticketek.co.nz/shows/show.aspx?sh=VOCALFX07.
Look forward to seeing you there!!!
Cheers,
Angela

Jim passed away at about 10:10pm this evening. His and Glenda's family
were there for support. At this time arrangements for any services have
not been made. There will probably be a service in the last half of
this week - Wednesday or later. As soon as arrangements have been made
I will let you know.
This is a huge loss for all of us.
I will see to it that Glenda gets all of the notes you sent to me in the
last week or so regarding Jim and your memories.
Please keep Glenda and the family in your prayers.

In case anyone was interested and didn't already know, Vocal FX now
has a website and a myspace page! Check out:

They're looking good, even if still a little bit under construction.
> The "Harmony Achievement Award" recognises that smaller choruses may
be doing a fantastic job but just can never sound quite as
impressive as the bigger ones. This year the cut-off (number on
stage) was 75. The winning chorus was O.K. City Chorus, with 75 on
stage, scoring 1216 points. If only they had one more person on
stage! Then the award would have gone to Wellington City!
Well picked, Angela! The formula for Harmony Achievement is "no more
than 80% of the number of people on stage of the average chorus. So -
with 3099 on stage in 33 choruses, the cutoff was 75.12. We worked that
out at the pre-contest briefing, but by then it was too late for us to
"help" OK City with their recruitment programme!
Anyway... thanks for all the support given to Wellington City. We had a
ball in Las Vegas! While we wer there, our performance improved out of
sight, with help from Ase Hagerman, Janet Ashford, and Lynne Smith -
also, Melody came to some of our rehearsals and helped our front row.
A great performance on the day - free, joyful, uninhibited - all the
things we knew we had to develop. So, certainly we connected with the
audience, even if if wasn't as tight as our set that won Regional. The
feedback we got was enough to make our heads swell! One of my
favourites: "you're so free! We Americans are so buttoned-up!!" (!!!!)
Apparently we had the only standing O of the first session, and plenty
of people were keen to let us know it was real one, and nothing to do
with where we came from. Lots of SAI and BHS bigwigs were surprised how
well we sang - the point being that the competition in NZ has become
strong, so they don't get hear NZ choruses at int'l until they've
reached a pretty good level!
Overall, we were "seeded" 22nd on Regional score, and finished 20th. We
were in the middle group of choruses, and the biggest gap in the table
was the 68 pt gap between us and the 21st-placed chorus.
A great experience!
Cheers

QUARTETS:
Perfect Timing did a grand job, placing 34th (1120 points) out of 49
quartets.
Order of appearance for finals (Saturday our time):
Mic-tester: B.L.A.K. VELVET (1200 points)
1. Zing!
2. JACKPOT!
3. FOUR BETTYS
4. XTREME
5. SALT

CHORUS:
Wellington City came 20th out of 33 choruses!!!
66 on stage
Score: 1155
The "Harmony Achievement Award" recognises that smaller choruses may
be doing a fantastic job but just can never sound quite as
impressive as the bigger ones. This year the cut-off (number on
stage) was 75. The winning chorus was O.K. City Chorus, with 75 on
stage, scoring 1216 points. If only they had one more person on
stage! Then the award would have gone to Wellington City!
The largest chorus (North Metro) had 180 singers on stage.
Order of appearance for top 10 finals - Sunday our time:
Mic-tester: Pacific Empire (1288 points)
1. Velvet Hills
2. Skyline [Melody Lowe, director of Greater Auckland Chorus is
singing with Skyline]
3. Rich-Tone
4. Gem City
5. Melodeers
6. Channelaire
7. Pacific Sound
8. San Diego
9. Spirit of the Gulf
10. North Metro
Both quartet and chorus finals begin at 8:00am New Zealand time, on
Saturday and Sunday respectively. Viewing is free via this link:

Enjoy!
