The Road to Ruin: 7 Ways to Destroy Your Music Career
rev,
Everybody wants to know the easy, proven steps to music success. Therefore, every expert offers tips and strategies to help you reach your goals -- including me.
Well, it's time to shake things up and serve a new audience -- which explains why this post takes a look at the dark side: How to ruin your music career in seven easy steps ...
1) Give Away Your Personal Power
The first step to destroying your music career is to realize that your destiny is in the hands of other people and circumstances beyond your control. Fully embrace the fact that you need to be in the right place at the right time to get your "lucky break" and be "discovered."
Industry people and music critics must deem you worthy of success for you to have value as a musician. Also, cling to the belief that all the answers are "out there" somewhere and you will be incredibly successful at failure.
2) Turn Marketing, Promotion and Sales Into a Huge Burden
Do you really wanna fall flat fast? Then start referring to marketing as a "necessary evil" quick. Realize that you don't have what it takes to "sell yourself" and reach more fans. In fact, there's probably a biological reason you hate promotion: you were born without the critical marketing gene that all those "gift of gab" people have. Therefore, you are destined to live a lifetime of hardship as you struggle with having to engage in the ugly chore of self-promotion.
3) Be Fearful of Being Perceived as a Greedy, Capitalist Pig
Paranoia will go a long way to helping you fall short of a thriving music career -- especially when it comes to earning money. Just know that every one of your fans is watching you and waiting to jump ship the second they smell any scent of capitalism. Therefore, if you make any sales pitches at all, they better be so low key as to be barely perceptible.
In fact, it would be best not to even make people aware that you have things for sale. Just wait till they come to you. If they're interested, they'll ask. And if you want to score extra points, when they do ask, tell them you left all your CDs and T-shirts at home.
4) Use a Lack of Time, Money and Connections as Your Biggest Excuse
Here's a surefire way to go down in flames. Have convenient scapegoats based on scarcity. Tell anyone who asks (as well as a lot of people who don't ask or care) how lousy your career is because of all the lack in your life. Frequently use phrases such as "There aren't enough hours in the day," "If I had that kind of money, I'd be a rock star too," and "It's not what you know, it's who you know." To spice things up, every now and then throw in an angry reference to "The man."
5) Market Yourself to the Faceless Masses Using Traditional Big Media
Why spend all that time dealing one on one with fans, when someday someone could just throw a bunch of money (you know, the funds you don't have enough of now) into a massive marketing campaign? Realize that it takes big bucks spent on radio promotion, retail placement, billboards, and paid display ads in national magazines to succeed. This mass media mindset is your ticket to success ... at hitting the fast track to failure. Bonus tip: Never answer your email from fans, and rarely -- if ever -- log into your Facebook, MySpace or Twitter accounts. Better yet, don't even start these accounts.
6) Promote Yourself Sporadically and Only When It's Urgent
If you have a mailing list (and with sucky email delivery and open rates these days, why bother?), be sure the fans on your list don't hear from you very often. One of the best "road to ruin" marketing tactics is blasting your fans with urgent "come to my show" or "buy my new album now" messages when they haven't heard from you in months. Your ultimate goal is have fans read your promotions and go, "Who is this band again?"
7) Know That Everyone Owes You Something Simply Because You Exist
I've saved the best way to destroy your music career for last. Simply know that everyone will care as much about you and your music as you do. Understand that complete strangers will indeed listen to every note of your 70-minute concept album and read every word of your 10-page bio. Be sure to send long, in-depth emails and leave lengthy, rambling voice mail messages for the imbeciles who don't recognize your greatness. Also, be sure to insult anyone who doesn't get back to you within 10 minutes. There you have it -- the top seven ways to ruin your music career.
So ... what are you waiting for? Now get out there and demote yourself!!! Have anything you want to add to this discussion? Please leave a comment on this page.
Using 'Augmented Reality' to Promote Music
Ready for the next generation of computer interactivity? Say hello to Augmented Reality! And start thinking about how you might some day use it to promote your music.
Not sure what it is? Don't worry. It's only recently become a hot buzz word (or phrase), even though the term has been around since about 1992. Here's the most basic way to describe it: Augmented Reality (AR) involves the combination of real-world, real-time activity with computer-generated elements. It's the merging of the real and virtual worlds. Continue reading this post here ...

Subject: Remarks from CBS Sunday Morning (everyone should
read!)
The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by
him on CBS Sunday Morning
Commentary.
My confession:
I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And
it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful
lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees.. I don't feel threatened.
I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas
trees.
It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me.
I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a
ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it It shows that we are all
brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't
bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key
intersection near my beach house in Malibu . If people want a crčche, it's
just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.
I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think
Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think
people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around,
period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America
is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the
Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.
Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we
should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as
we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old,
too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these
celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.
In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a
little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not
funny, it's intended to get you thinking.
Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane
Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?'
(regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and
insightful response.. She said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened
by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out
of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And
being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How
can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand
He leave us alone?'
In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc.
I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her
body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our
schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the
Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not
steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.
Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they
misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might
damage their self-esteem (Dr Spock's son committed suicide). We
said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK.
Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they
don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill
strangers, their classmates, and themselves.
Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out.
I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'
Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the
world's going to hell Funny how we believe what the newspapers say,
but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes'
through e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending
messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.
Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through
cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and
workplace.
Are
you laughing yet?
Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your
address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will
think of you for sending it.
Funny
how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what
God thinks of us.
Pass
it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it.....
no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process,
don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.
My Best Regards, Honestly
and respectfully,
Ben Stein

> >That surprises you, doesn't it?" the young woman asked. > >"Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request," said the Pastor.
> >The young woman explained. "My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement.

Paul Harvey and Prayer
Paul Harvey says:
I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I'm not going to sue somebody for singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December. I don't agree with Darwin , but I didn't go out and hire a lawyer when my high school teacher taught his Theory of Evolution.
Life, liberty or your pursuit of happiness will not be endangered because someone says a 30-second prayer before a football game. So what's the big deal? It's not like somebody is up there reading the entire Book of Acts. They're just talking to a God they believe in and asking him to grant safety to the players on the field and the fans going home from the game.
But it's a Christian prayer, some will argue.
Yes, and this is the United States of America , a country founded on Christian principles. According to our very own phone book, Christian churches outnumber all others better than 200-to-1. So what would you expect -- somebody chanting Hare Krishna?
If I went to a football game in Jerusalem , I would expect to hear a Jewish prayer.
If I went to a soccer game in Baghdad , I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer.
If I went to a ping pong match in China , I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha.
And I wouldn't be offended. It wouldn't bother me one bit. When in Rome .....
But what about the atheists? Is another argument.
What about them? Nobody is asking them to be baptized. We're not going to pass the collection plate. Just humor us for 30 seconds. If that's asking too much, bring a Walkman or a pair of ear plugs. Go to the bathroom. Visit the concession stand. Call your lawyer!
Unfortunately, one or two will make that call. One or two will tell thousands what they can and cannot do. I don't think a short prayer at a football game is going to shake the world's foundations.
Christians are just sick and tired of turning the other cheek while our courts strip us of all our rights. Our parents and grandparents taught us to pray before eating, to pray before we go to sleep. Our Bible tells us to pray without ceasing. Now a handful of people and their lawyers are telling us to cease praying.
God, help us. And if that last sentence offends you, well, just sue me.
The silent majority has been silent too long. It's time we tell that one or two who scream loud enough to be heard that the vast majority doesn't care what they want. It is time that the majority rules! It's time we tell them, You don't have to pray; you don't have to say the Pledge of Allegiance; you don't have to believe in God or attend services that honor Him. That is your right, and we will honor your right; but by golly, you are no longer going to take our rights away. We are fighting back, and we WILL WIN!
God bless us one and all ... Especially those who denounce Him , God bless America, despite all her faults. She is still the greatest nation of all. God bless our service men who are fighting t o protect our right to pray and worship God.
Let's make 2009 the year the silent majority is heard and we put God back as the foundation of our families and institutions .. And our military forces c ome home from all the wars.

I just wanted to share with you that we have lost one of the most amazing musicians/ singer/ songwriters in our movement. Linda Webb Kakhaba passed yesterday after a long battle with Cancer. I wanted to let you all know. If you never heard her, you missed out. Her music is available on CD contact Santa Rosa CSL for info. Her voice, passion, chants and her vibrant Spirit will be missed and will always be with me.
I have so much more to be grateful than to be sorry for!

HI EVERYONE. AS MOST OF YOU KNOW, I HAD A VERY BAD HEART ATTACK ON DEC 9. I HAD RECEIVED THIS SAME EMAIL THE WEEK BEFORE AND I WANT YOU TO KNOW IT SAVED MY LIFE. I LIVE ABOUT ONE MILE FROM THE ST JOHNS MERCY HEART HOSPITAL. I WOKE UP AT MIDNITE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS HEART ATTACK. MY ARMS ACHED HORRIBLY AND MY CHEST FELT LIKE IT HAD BEEN HIT WITH A SLEDGE HAMMER AND I COULDN'T GET MY BREATH. I WAS AFRAID TO WAIT FOR AN AMBULANCE AND I REMEMBERED WHAT THIS EMAIL HAD TOLD ME SO I STARTED COUGHING AS HARD AS I COULD AND DROVE MYSELF TO THE HEART HOSPITAL. THAT COUGHING KEPT ME FROM PASSING OUT AND I MADE IT TO THE HOSPITAL.
AS SOON AS I GOT THERE, THEY DID NOT ASK ME ANY ADMISSION QUESTIONS. INSTEAD THEY TOOK MY BLOOD PRESSURE, DID AN EKG AND TOOK ME DIRECTLY TO THE OPERATING ROOM. I DON'T RECALL THEIR EVEN ASKING ME MY NAME. THEY JUST WENT TO WORK ON ME. IN THE OPERATING ROOM THEY PUT A STINT IN MY GROIN AND THATS WHEN MY HEART STOPPED. I WAS DEAD. THEY SHOCKED ME WITH THE PADDLES AND GOT ME BACK. THE "WIDOW MAKER" ARTERY WAS 80% BLOCKED AND THE AEORTIC ARTERY WAS 90% BLOCKED.
IN SHORT, I AM STILL ALIVE AND NOW DEALING WITH SEVERAL HEALTH ISSUES BUT I AM ALIVE AND IT IS ALL BECAUSE SOMEONE SENT ME THIS EMAIL ABOUT SELF CPR. I DON'T KNOW WHO THEY ARE BUT I AM GRATEFUL TO THEM BECAUSE THEY SAVED MY LIFE. I HOPE YOU WILL READ THIS SELF CPR AND REMEMBER IT BECAUSE IT MIGHT SAVE YOUR LIFE SOME DAY.

NOT SURPRISINGLY, SOME WORSHIPERS AT SUNDAY SERVICES WILL GIVE CASINO CHIPS RATHER THAN CASH WHEN THE BASKET IS PASSED.
SINCE THEY GET CHIPS FROM MANY DIFFERENT CASINOS, THE CHURCHES HAVE DEVISED A METHOD TO COLLECT THE OFFERINGS..
THE CHURCHES SEND ALL THEIR COLLECTED CHIPS TO A NEARBY FRANCISCAN MONASTERY FOR SORTING AND THEN THE CHIPS ARE TAKEN TO THE CASINOS OF ORIGIN AND CASHED IN.

hi everyone. i hope you had a wonderful thanksgiving and continue to be filled with gratitude for all you/we have.
i just received this email from carrie cohn who founded www.carriesheart.org. the 2008 recording artists retreat was so phenomenal and we raised a lot of money for 13 handicapped children and their families. if you weren't at the 2008 festivities let me just say it was the best yet and those beautiful kids and their siblings touched all our hearts. Little Valerie, who was our first client, made her transition and moved only a few months after the retreat and concert. the memory of her beautiful smile and laughter will always be with me. and the work will go on. the 2009 retreat will include another benefit concert for the 12 children and families that carrier provides such wonderful medical and nutriional and emotional and other care, for.

Gifts of Gratitude
Dear Carrie's Heart Family,
I intended for this letter to get to you all by Thanksgiving. However, I have been struggling to find the way to express what is in my heart. For almost two months now I have lacked the words to express what I feel. Those closest to me know that Valerie and I shared a very strong connection. Not having children of my own, I truly feel that my Carrie's Heart kids are my children. Valerie holds a very special place in my heart. I now understand the deep pain of losing a child
I often feel that I am unable to put into words the intensity & impact of the work that we are doing with our children in Mexico. Those who have had the opportunity to travel to the Yucatan and to visit the families have all expressed that my words & pictures did not come close to capturing the reality of the lives of the children. The need there is immense.
So...in thinking about what I would want to share with you all at this time of year...I think of Valerie and all the other children we will help in her name. My hope is to share with all of you who help to make up Carrie's Heart the thanks and gifts that we have received....THEY BELONG TO US ALL!
Gifts of Gratitude: A deeper appreciation for what we have...Health, Home, Family and the simplest pleasures of life. Being humbled by receiving expressions of gratitude from families who can barely meet their basic needs...a soda right when we arrive from Juan Diego's mom, Lucelly's mother making tortillas to feed us each time we visit. David reaching out to hold your hand. A mother expressing the difference we have made in their life...knowing that they have help in caring for their child...no longer feeling alone. Jose's smile when he sees us! Experiencing firsthand the truth in that if you give you will receive. Being given little love notes and pictures from the siblings of our children...giving back to us a gift from their heart. The laughter of a child who is so excited to see you again & uses their laugh to say hello!
TOGETHER we bring joy into the lives of some very special children...whose lives are very different without us. This is the greatest lesson I learned from Valerie. When I look back over the past years I remember most, the moments of true joy that we experienced with her...visiting Santa, her first Christmas tree, blowing bubbles, laughing at Dora and playing with Valerie and her boyfriend "Panchito". All of these moments are the most important moments of giving & receiving. Thank you to each of you for helping in your own ways to bring these moments of joy to our children's lives.
It has been difficult for me to prepare for the holiday season this year. However, I know that the work is not done. Our other children still have great needs to be met. David & Lucelly have been having medical complications throughout the fall. We have children who are still in need of wheelchairs. We have children living in homes that expose them to the elements and are in need of blankets & clothing this winter to keep them warm. Our families are being directly affected by the financial crisis that we are all experiencing. Their livelihoods depend on tourism and this has been a very difficult year for them.
We have also accomplished a lot this year. We are continuing to sponsor the needs of twelve children. We have provided for the nutritional, personal care and medical needs of the children. Over the past few months all of the children are now receiving physical therapy for the first time in their lives...and we wish for that to continue because of the noticeable changes in the children physically. We have seen positive changes in all of our families...some greater than others...but all making changes in their own way.
I believe that we are to continue on, helping the children who come across our path. I did not come across Valerie by accident. Her story did not touch so many by accident. She was a light...illuminating our way, teaching us what we needed to learn and continuing to direct our way in helping others. We can only continue this work, helping children that no one else is reaching out to, with the support of each of you. It takes each of us giving of ourselves in different ways, knowing that nothing given is ever too small...when together we are making the difference in the life of a child.
At this time of year when we all reflect on what we are thankful for....I am thankful for each of you for the ongoing support you have given Carrie's Heart that allows us to continue our work in Valerie's name.
Hi,
I am sending this email to everyone on my contact list.
As most of you know I am an ordained minister operating
Contemporary Spiritual Arts and besides working with spiritual
recording artists and songwriters, a major facet of my ministry
involves working with prison inmates in the state of missouri
and it is this that i write to all of you about today.
I work with an organization called COPE (Congregation Offenders Partnership
Enterprizes) and we assist paroled inmates in successfully
re-entering society upon parole. I have been working with inmates as a
spiritual correspondence partner for over fiften years. COPE was founded in 1983
and together, we provide transitional housing for the first 9 months to a year
when an inmate is paroled. "We create partnership teams from congregations all over
the st. louis area for each inmate. the partnership team becomes this parolees extended
family and assists them in acclimating to freedom in ways you cant even begin to imagine.
do you know that the average return to prison (recidivism) rate for all paroled prisoners
is almost 80%. thats because of the perceived need to return to crime in order to survive that
almost all parolees have upon release.
WELL HERE IS SOME GOOD NEWS, SINCE 1983, WITH HUNDREDS OF CLIENTS AT COPE,
OUR RECIDIVISM RATE HAS BEEN LESS THAN FIFTEEN PERCENT. OUR PROGRAM REALLY WORKS
AND THESE MEN AND WOMEN BECOME ACTIVE, PRODUCTIVE MEMBERS OF SOCIETY.
Now, I am writing to you today because I have my 7th COPE partner, Jon Stacey, being released
on June 27, 2008. John is 69 years old, has served 29 years in prison and is presently somewhat
disabled with arthritis. Taking a bus everywhere would be difficult on him and a car would alleviate
that problem. SO, I AM LOOKING FOR A CAR THAT RUNS AND IS STILL MECHANICALLY DEPENDABLE.
If you have an older car you are thinking of selling, or know someone else who is thinking of
getting a new car, donating your car to my ministry might be very advantageous to you tax wise,
versus selling it or trading it in.
In return for your gifting your car or your friend gifting their car to my ministry I can offer a tax
credit letter which can be used in your 2008 tax preparations as a contribution. This would be for
the highest possible retail value of the car.
Many of you who i am writing to are pulpit ministers. i am asking you to make an announcement from
your pulpit or publish the need for a car donation in your newsletter. i will be happy to fly anywhere
in the usa to pick this car up and drive it back to st. louis for jon stacey to use when he is
released on June 27, 2008. If you aren't a pulpit minister and don't have a car you are thinking of trading
in, perhaps someone you know does. Won't you please ask around for me.
I THANK EACH OF YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE IN MAKING THIS REQUEST A REALITY.
Suggested love offering: $15.00. Coffee and light refreshments will be served
