Wednesday 28th April - Fleamarket Funk £3 (11pm-3am)
Fat Freddy's Drop are purveyor's of a freaky nu Pacific soul train,
smothered in bottom heavy funk, jazz, deep dub and skanking roots reggae,
they are a 7 piece band hailing from Wellington, Aotearoa (New Zealand).
The band grew organically from DJ Fitchie's improv style DJ sets, starting
out with vocals from Joe Dukie and growing as Wellington's most talented
jazz players joined the line up.
The jamming process now features; DJ Fitchie on beats; Joe Dukie with that
sweet sweet voice; Jetlag Johnson on guitar and Dobie Blaze on keys adding
layers of blues and funk. The horn section; Fulla Flash on Sax, Sugar 2
Tone
on Trumpet and Hopepa on Trombone - who together bring an old worlde jazz
charm to the unique fusion styles of Fat Freddy's Drop.
Mu AKA DJ Fitchie was recently awarded Best Producer at the New Zealand
Music Awards (comparable to the UK Mercury Music Prize), at the same
awards
Warryn Maxwell AKA Fulla Flash (sax player) was awarded Best Musician.
Singer Joe Dukie was recently described by Charlie Gillet (BBC LDN) as
sounding "...like one of the best singer-songwriters in the world...".
The bands influences and inspiration come from a depth of musical
knowledge
and a dedication to live performance, as described by Fitchie; "Our music
is
very heavily rooted in Reggae, Jazz, Soul and Funk but our interpretation
is
very modern. Live performance is where our music is written, we take
simple
rhythmic ideas and explore them on stage. We
believe that music is best when it is given space to breathe, space is
important !! We have many influences, they range from Alice Coltrane, the
Meters, Donny Hathaway and King Tubby thru to Timerland , D'Angelo and
Outkast. But our most important influences come from our peers here in NZ
,
our mates in other bands, our brothers we see every day and hang out
with."
A by-product of a vibrant live music scene steeped in jazz, dub, reggae
and
dancefloor orientated electronica, Fat Freddy's are best known for their
extensive late night sets with coatings of jazz, soul and funk, rooted in
Aotearoa and delivered with an island attitude!
"Definitely one of the best live shows I've seen at One World Live, if not
the BEST !" Olivier Tison promoter for BBC Radio 1's OneWorld live event
at
Notting Hill Arts Club.
Fat Freddy's Drop made their international debut in August 2002 on 12"
vinyl
under the production guise Joe Dukie & DJ Fitchie, whose Midnight
Marauders
was signed to Jazzanova/Sonar Kollektiv's prestigious Best Seven imprint
and
released to widespread underground acclaim and subsequently license to an
array of compilations.
August 2003 saw the next release, tracks Hope and Bluey, on limited
edition
10" vinyl, this time through management company Kartel. Hope in
particular
recieved outstanding critical acclaim, ending up in numerous year end
charts
including Gilles Peterson's (BBC Radio 1) top 20 singles for 2003.
The Band are currently in the studio in Wellington (New Zealand) putting
the
finishing touches to their debut album which is due out in September.
They
have also just completed their New Zealand Summer tour which was sponsored

Sat 1st May - Moving Through Birthday Special with New York's Qool Dj Marv
(£8 / £6 before midnight - 10:30pm-3am)
The Resonance + percussion join Qool Dj Marv for Moving through's last
ever
event at Cabaret Voltaire (new venue to be announced in a couple of
weeks).
Qool DJ Marv needs no introduction, but for the uninitiated:
Marv has made his reputation by his ability to mix diverse music styles
but
still keep the dancefloor grooving. His sets span from the 60's to R&B,
Hip-Hop, Reggae, & Latin, House, Jazz, Funk, Rock and Soul classics, and
Eclectic beats from around the world.
He attributes his wide-ranging appeal to his understanding of the
universality of good grooves. He has achieved a passionate following and
is
considered a 'tastemaker' amongst his music industry and DJ peers. Marv
has
been producing a mixtape series called Beats, Jazz, & Soul, (which used to
be called Acid Hip Jazz Hop) for 9 years. So infamous is the series that
he
has been asked to mix CDs for Universal, The Fader Magazine's Suite 903,
and
now his first official release which we proudly present on Grand Central
Records. Marv does this all with a big smile on his face as he truly is
doing what he loves and loving what he's doing.
Marv has been the DJ of choice for some of the most coveted gigs in New
York
City. From the gritty funkiness of Lower East Side lounges to stepping up
to
the decks at HBO premiere parties for The Sopranos and Sex In The City.
Gigs
that spawned from Marv's breakthrough performance as he held a crowd in a
groove for 21Z2 hours at one of Prince's spur-of-the moment Tramps jam
sessions until his purple highness showed. As the resident DJ at the
legendary Tramps nightclub (now Centro-Fly) , Marv opened for artists like
Erykah Badu, George Clinton and P-Funk, Busta Rhymes, and A Tribe Called
Quest.
It was back in 1999 when Marv made the pilgrimage to Manchester. DJing
between Grand Central's Mark Rae and Mo wax's James Lavelle at the
legendry
GC night 'Counterculture'. Marv is now a bi-monthly resident for Grand
Central club night Friends & Family.
"My relationship with Grand Central began with the purchase of the Tony D
album 'Pound For Pound' from a shop in the East Village NYC. I went on to
include the tune 'All I Have' onto the 20th volume of my bedroom
mixtape/CD
series, Beats, Jazz & Soul (of which, there are 64 volumes to date).
These mixes essentially represented my efforts to bridge the gap between
the
urban mainstream and the global underground. I apply long-standing hip
hop
DJing techniques like cutting or blending acapellas to make my mixes sound
like what a true hip hop and R&B head would feel. It was a down tempo
mixtape that I gave to DJ Spinna that got me that first gig in Manchester.
It was about 5 years after I put out my first mixtape"
"Grand Central is the label for the music listener that happily has no
regard for categorization. With Grand Central, you can't relay on 'it
sounds like this or that' classification. Each artist on Grand Central
has
a unique voice, sound, and style. Grand Central doesn't seem bothered
with
a made for masses categorization."
The prospect of doing this mix was exhilarating, especially after I
learned
that it was for release and not just a promotional showcase CD for the
label. When I received the tunes, I studied them to find the dots that I
wanted to connect to have 76 minutes of Grand Central's music move fluidly
along from vibe to vibe, and style to style, until you realize that you
actually have lost track of time while listening to it."
"I wanted the mix to translate Grand Central's tunes to the 'soon to be
aware'. My personal agenda though was also to use this mix as a vehicle
to
illustrate how good everything sounds when you listen to music with an
appreciative objectivity. Grand Central's authentic diversity and the
open
mind to 'take it all' in are the shining stars of this mix. Just check the
cast of characters...Mark Rae, Amp Fiddler, Souls Of Mischief, Pharcyde,
Veba, Kriminul, Kate Rogers, AIM, Niko, Fingathing, Nudge, Lightening
Head,
Craig G, Funky Fresh Few, Jungle Brothers, The Nudge, Skitz, Only Child,
Tony D, Jon Kennedy, Rob Smith, and Dubble D.Sall on one disc."
"My only regret, which is also a hope, is that I could have done at least
two more discs. I wanted to have a Dual Control and Riton track or two
included, as well as getting some bombs like the Llorca mix of 'Addicted'
on
the mix. I feel like the man came in and broke up the party 70 minutes
into
my 3 hour set, but let me play 2 more to cool down the crowd. While
listening to all things Grand Central I could hear 2 or 3 more CDs."
