THE EVENT

THE DARK CITY FESTIVAL 2005 in Edinburgh will be held from Friday
29th April to Sunday 1st May 2005 over the first May bank holiday
weekend. This is Scotland's Premier Alternative Music Festival
featuring Electronic, Darkwave and Gothic music acts.

Intended to provide something for everyone who enjoys alternative
music; it is hoped that the city will host a second great influx of
like-minded people to dance the night away. Edinburgh possesses
beautiful architecture including an amazing skyline, running down the
Royal Mile, from the imposing Castle to the Scottish Parliament and
Holyrood Palace. This together with its scenic, historic and haunted
'Old Town' is considered the perfect location for this grand, aptly
named 'Dark City' festival event.

The festival is brought again to Edinburgh by the 'Dark City Events
Ltd.' team. These are James Lile and Jonathan Haynes who have joined
forces to promote and DJ for 'ASCENSION' the capital's (Edinburgh)
leading and favourite Alternative music club; together with Julia
Lile proprietress of 'Underground Nation', the alternative clothing
store in Edinburgh.

EDINBURGH

Visitors will be pleased to find that the main bus, train stations
and airport bus link are all centrally located and it is only a short
cab ride or walking distance to affordable city centre hostel and
other accommodation. All is also within a short walking distance of
the festival venue, 'Teviot Row House', students union in Bristo
Square. Edinburgh the Capital of Scotland is easily accessible to the
rest of the UK, Ireland, Europe and the USA through its road, rail
links and airport.

FESTIVAL ARRIVALS

Friday festival arrivals should expect their accommodation to be
central and easy to find. The short walking distances afforded by the
festival's central location should give them ample time to settle in
and visit the main festival rendezvous, the 'Underground Nation' shop
at 46 Candlemaker Row. Here tickets can be exchanged for wristband
passes from 11am to 6pm on Friday and until 5pm throughout the
weekend. This is advised to avoid any last minute rush or queues
forming at the festival venue. Once equipped with wristband passes,
festival goers should have ample time to visit one of the many nearby
bars and restaurants and prepare for the evening.

DOORS

Tickets may also be exchanged for wristbands at Teviot Row House on
Friday from 8pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 4pm. The reception
area at Teviot Row House will also have a ticket box office selling a
limited number of day tickets for the event. Availability will be
subject to sales of the three-day tickets and will cost, Friday £14,
Saturday £20, Sunday £20. Purchasing the three-day weekend ticket is
advised to avoid disappointment and is better value at £34.00. the
reception area will have a festival information point and an ample
cloakroom facility.

THE VENUE

'Teviot Row House', where the festival is to be held, is an imposing
gothic building dating from 1889. It is the oldest purpose built
student union building in the world. The building has a huge array of
rooms spread over 7 floors, including 5 bars, a cafeteria and a games
room.

Teviot Row House is used as the famous Gilded Balloon during the
world-renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It has played host to The
Fringe performers club and past music festivals including folk. It
now regularly accommodates student social life as well as diverse
other large club events in the city from Goth to salsa. It has a lot
to offer the festival and will be fully utilised throughout the
duration of the event.

BANDS

Dark City Festival 2005 will be featuring 15 great bands from the UK,
Germany, Holland, Norway and USA.

Absurd Minds (Germany): Dark Electro at it's finest.
Often compared to Project Pitchfork's sound, but it would be Project
Pitchfork at their best. Note: This will be their first UK
performance.

autoclav1.1 (UK): Electronic Obscura.
Exciting new one man project offering something a bit different.
Image projections triggered by the music will create an interesting
visual and aural experience.

Clan Of Xymox (Holland): Legends of the Gothic genre.
After 20 years together they have brought out a 'BEST OF' album. A
melancholic stage show befitting of their acclaimed musical work.

CombiChrist (Norway/Germany): Aggressive Electro. (The new sound of
Terror!)
Very quickly amassing an army of fans with their harsh yet catchy
songs. An amazingly energetic live act. Project of Icon Of Coil front
man Andy LaPlegua.

Conspiracy (UK): Electro Pop.
Electronic with a guitar twist providing music with a sleazy sounding
edge to it.

Das Präparat (Germany): Operatic synth pop. (With a blend of male,
female and robotic vocals). Unmistakable, unique live performance.
Note: First performance in the UK. Side project of WELLE:ERDBALL.

Deviant-UK (UK): Electro Goth.
Impossible not to mention the brilliant 'Numanesque' vocals of this
up and coming band. Catchy as hell tunes with a malevolent stage
performance.

E.S.A. (UK): Noise driven beats.
Provides exactly what it says on the tin! 'Electronic Substance
Abuse'.

Icon Of Coil (Norway): Dancefloor friendly Electro.
Now settled in the top echelon of Electro bands, a firm favourite on
the 'scene'. Energetic live performance from front man Andy LaPlegua.

Inkubus Sukkubus (UK): Pagan Goth Rock. (With rich, lush orchestral
sounds)
Definitely one of the biggest and most prolific bands of the genre.
Have performed at many high profile festivals throughout the world.

OVNI (UK): Electro Pop.
Side project of SEIZE with a completely different sound, mainly due
to male vocals. Interact with their live audience, creating a feel
good factor.

Rotersand (Germany): Electro Pop.
Rising stars on the Electro scene. Their debut album 'Truth is
Fanatic' has been Highly acclaimed in the media as has their
energetic live performances.

Scrap.EDX (USA): IDM/Noise
One of the stand out live performers on the IDM scene. Pulsating and
rhythmic soundscapes to lose yourself in.

Tactical Sekt (UK/Germany): Harsh Electro.
Much respected distorted vocal Electro act with killer dance floor
friendly beats. Performance element enhanced with live drumming from
FEINDFLUG drummer.

The Way OF All Flesh (UK): Goth.
Old school Goth at it's best. Have been on the go for a number of
years performing live at various events throughout the UK..

Bands will be performing in the main hall on the top floor of the
venue. They will commence at 9pm on Friday and 5pm on Saturday and
Sunday. When the band events end at midnight, festival goers will
fall back to the club and lounge areas in the rest of the building
until 3am.

CLUBS AND SPACES

Clubs will run from 10.30pm until 3am each night and giving festival
goers an added choice to the live music in the debating hall.

There will be 3 different clubs on each night providing EBM,
Industrial, Electro, Futurepop, Noise and Trad-Goth music.

These include: Ascension, Edinburgh; Batfink, Sheffield; Cryotec,
Glasgow; Dark Flower, Leipzig, Germany; Dominion, Dublin; [Implant]
from Manchester; DJ CyberChrist, UK; DJ Tryste, from Seattle, Tacoma.

These are mostly from around the UK collaborating to showcase their
unique club nights at the DARK CITY Festival in Edinburgh. There will
also be a collection of special guest DJs combining to create another
unique club called 'Fusion'.

There will be an ambient lounge for people to relax and socialise in,
with music provided by 'Finsternis' (Edinburgh) and their guest DJs
playing, dark ambient, neo-classical, neo-folk and ethereal music.
This will be held in the 'Middle Bar' area.

The Mezzanine area or 'Mezz' will host the Bazaar. It also has a
Costa coffee outlet serving a range of hot beverages, light snacks
and hot food which can be consumed in the 'Sportsman's bar' area,
containing tables and chairs.

Access to the 'Terrace Bar', another of the club areas is through
this Mezzanine floor.

The 'Underground' is the main nightclub space in the venue. With a
400 capacity, it usually caters to regular Goth and rock nights,
indie and world music.

Adjacent to the 'Underground', the 'Sportsman's bar' area will also
be available as a socialising area, with pool tables and an array of
games machines.

THE BAZAAR

An alternative Bazaar will run in the Mezzanine area on Saturday and
Sunday from door opening time at 4pm until 3am. There will be an
extensive range of quality stallholders, supplying a range of gothic
and alternative club clothing, accessories and music CD's.

SOME FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT THE EVENT

Some interesting information about the previous Dark City Festival
Event. The 2004 event attracted 400 people on the Friday night, which
was purely a club event with no performing bands and 800 people on
the Saturday and 800 people on the Sunday when the bands were
performing. This was a huge success in terms of the turnout for a
first time event. The Festival instantly acquired the reputation of
being one of the best produced events that the participating bands
had ever performed at.

Festival goers drank the bars dry of Lager, Cider and Vodka, but
there should be ample supplies for 2005. The promoters continue to
maintain very high standards in meeting the requirements of visiting
bands and other musical personnel, from sound and technical
requirements to catering and hospitality. It is said that Mark
Jackson, drummer of VNV Nation acknowledged that the drum kit
supplied to the band for the event was better than his own!

HOW DIFFERENT THIS WILL BE TO THE 2004 EVENT

The 2005 Dark City event will differ from last years event in the
following ways. It will be enhanced with more bands, more
participating clubs and a larger bazaar with more stallholders. There
will be more choice in terms of bands and clubs on, some running
simultaneously to keep most festival goers interested throughout the
event. In this way it will run more like a German Festival than
anything seen in the UK to date.

There will be more multimedia projection in 2005, this includes the
main hall and throughout the festival venue, provided by a dedicated
company, '[alternative]perspective'.

Festival goers should not only expect an enhanced festival experience
over the 2004 event but a more user-friendly Dark City Festival 2005.
This is because the whole Festival has been located in 'Teviot Row
House' rather than the two venues used last year. Due to the venues
central Edinburgh location, it will mean less time spent travelling
from personal accommodation to the venue for people. This should
afford visitors to the capital a more leisurely festival experience
with more opportunity to see the historic locale before opening times
and on the Bank Holiday Monday should they prolong their visit.

The Dark City Festival 2005 'unique selling proposition' relates to
the incredible value for money afforded by having 15 great bands and
several great clubs all available under one roof for one ticket price
over three days.

LIST OF CREDITS, THANKS TO

The Dark City Festival 2005 would not be possible without the hard
work, dedication and talents of the following people: James and Julia
Lile, Jonathan Haynes (Promoters / Organisers); Simon Barber (Website
Design); [alternative]perspective (Visuals); E.U.S.A (Edinburgh
University Students Association); all of the participating bands and
clubs as well as a host of others too numerous to list but to which
the promoters / organisers give their heartfelt thanks.
