PRESS BLURB :: THE CHAT.
Rob Da Bank - Fresh Air - Trouble DJs & MC Ratty B
Last year, the Trouble crew made a new friend when we supported DJ Rob
Da Bank at a launch party for local student radio station, Fresh Air,
in February. Other than his post-club session, The Blue Room, on
Radio 1, and a few killer releases on his burgeoning Sunday Best
label, we were most familiar with RDB from his reputation as a highly
eclectic selector on the club circuit during the Big Beat explosion in
the mid-Nineties. However, since he had also recently been tipped to
fill the shoes of John Peel (RIP), none of us were quite sure what to
expect. In the event, RDB proved he was worth his salt, playing
something of a blinder of heavy, dance floor beats, bootlegs &
mash-ups, clubs classics and a few unexpected surprises, rarely
sticking to one groove for too long and ultimately keeping the party
going in a freestyle manner not unlike the Trouble DJs' own. More to
the point, though, RDB enjoyed the Trouble crew's support set so much,
especially MC Ratty B (who he invited to keep MCing throughout his own
set), that at the end of the night he was heard to comment:
"I'm not sure I've ever seen anything quite like that before. Why
don't you come to Bestival this year."
And so we did. And what fun it was, rightly deserving the crown of
Best Medium-to-Large Festival at the 2006 UK Festival Awards.
There was a peculiar poetry to this development, as Trouble DJs
Hobbes, Erik d'Viking and Flanners had all initially met via the
then-fledgling Fresh Air FM while under the auspices of getting
degrees from Edinburgh University. And so, exactly a year on, we're
doffing our caps to Rob once more. But, not forgetting who
facilitated the chance meeting of kindred spirits in the first place,
we've invited Richard Davie of the Fresh Air DJs down as a support act
as well.
Surface Emp
MC Sum (Dominic Flannigan) won Radio 1's 8 Mile contest, consequently
recording a session for Tim Westwood at the Maida Vale studios with
Blak Twang. Hudson Mo (Ross Birchard) has won the Scottish ITF title
and was also the youngest ever Technics DMC finalist at the age of 15.
They have been gigging as Surface Emp since 2004, sharing a stage with
diverse luminaries such as Caribou, Roots Manuva, Autechre, Ty, RJD2,
Ice T, DJ Premier and Snow Patrol.
Promoting their recent debut, the Lucky Me EP (Far Cut), this
Glasgow/Edinburgh hip hop duo graces the Trouble stage for the first time.
This is a new generation of hip hop music, deliberately devoid of
cliché. It is new British music that hopefully relates to an audience
beyond that dubbed `urban'.
Eat your heart out, Nas. This is the bona fide hip-hop deal, UK-style
and it sure ain't dead.

Paddy Freeform
In the back room, we invite another new friend up from London. Paddy
Freeform was trying his best to help coordinate the circus that was
on-site radio station Bestival FM on the Isle of Wight this summer.
He also manages the Universal Vibes web site as well as promoting and
DJing at myriad nights in the Big Smoke which share Trouble's passion
for innovative grooves and classic dance moves. Expect a crate-load
of soul and a heady cocktail from him, with Richard Davie (Fresh Air
DJs) warming the room.
We think you'll agree this has all the hallmarks of another very
special Trouble.
