::3 - Andi Neate, Live CD recording, Bongo Club, Edinburgh
The Bongo Club, Holyrood Road, Edinburgh
tel 0131 228 8844

Tue 6 Mar,
7.30pm
£4 (from Ripping, Tickets Scotland and on the door) Live CD recording

Scottish singer/songwriter Andi Neate is looking for people to come to
the Bongo Club, Edinburgh on 6 March to be part of the audience when
she records her new CD (her fourth). The CD will include several brand
new songs as well as a selection of favourites from her live repertoire.

Andi said: "People will get a full concert (with maybe a little
starting and stopping) and they'll get to be part of the recording
process. So if you've got a distinctive whistle or cheer get in
practice and you may hear yourself on the CD. You'll also get your
name on the CD cover and be the first to hear the new songs. I am
really looking forward to recording in a different way. I get a huge
lift from performing to a live audience. "

Andi will be performing with her full band – Paul Gilbody (double
bass), Anne-Sophie Valdal (backing vocals), Lauren Hayes on the piano
and renowned Scottish cellist Wendy Weatherby.

Probably not appearing at the Bongo Club but who will be teaming up
with Andi in the not too distant future is actor David Prowse (aka
Darth Vader and the Green Cross Code Man). Both have been signed up
to the Peace Song – the brainchild of Carlisle based journalist Les
Floyd whose aim is to create the loudest, most widespread and
synchronised shout for peace in human history. Other confirmed
contributors include Grammy winning guitarist John Jorgenson, former
M-People member and Eurythmics saxophonist Snake Davis, singer/actress
Hazel O'Connor and globally-renowned Irish harpist Cormac De Barra.
Writing and recording are well underway and the Peace Song will be
released on the internet later this year.

Andi Neate is a singer/songwriter of exceptional talent and a powerful
voice. She is a compelling live performer, who has been compared with
Suzanne Vega and Ani Difranco. Recent appearances include Prague
Festival, Cambridge Fringe Festival, Wickerman and Solas Festivals,
The Famous Spiegeltent, and support for Rab Noakes. She has released
3 CDs, including 2005's Paper Animals, featuring a range of original
songs about life and the road – from California Coffee Police Boxes to
origami and sandcars. A woman of many talents and formidable
determination, she once spent 3 years building her own house
completely from scratch.

Review: Big Word Poetry Performance (Thursday 22.02.07)
By: C. Duffy.

What started out as a quiet night of Poetry recital immediately became
something bigger, as Jenny Lindsay took the stage to kick off Big Word
in its new home at City Café, (Blair St.) As seats were filled,
leaving standing room only, Robin Cairns launched into an energetic
set. Erudite but always in his native Glasgow tongue, this wit of
performance poetry danced as he thrilled the audience with frenetic
movement and big-brained insight.

Although a hard act to follow, Thick Richards, (1 half thereof at
least), were more than up to the task. Taking an educated Scally look
at the world with rapid fire technique that's been wowing folk all
over the country, and splitting sides with such humorous arguments as
to "why weed should not be legal". These guys hit the right note with
the crowd.

American Poet Jennifer Williams took the mic after the break, with a
voice of pure Americana honey and poetry of such imagery that one
relaxed into hazy smiles. I looked; the room was full of them!

A surprise floor-spot from new-comer Rachel Wylie with a single,
clause 22-inspired poem of a teacher asking her class to draw "a
family picture within government guidelines" had the gathering in
creases and local songster Jim MacAteer was definitely the right
choice to warm the heart before the varied crowd were treated to the
verbal vortex that is Ash Dickinson.

Another treat of the night was a performance from the Scottish Poetry
Slam Team, consisting of Milton Balgonie, Stephen Barnaby and Jenny
Lindsay. (And yes, we beat the English and Irish at something with
these three in the recent national competition.)

All interlocked with poems by the maestro herself, who can be one
minute funny, then touching, before reaching a sodden condemnation,
Jenny Lindsay did not disappoint.

If you thought poetry was a dry topic reserved for books and lonely
wanderers, then Big Word is just the medicine to prove you wrong.
