Red Vodka Club, 73 Cowgate, Edinburgh
My Wet Calvin
+ special guest YourboyBlair
20:00 on Saturday 21st April 2007
entry: 3£
My Wet Calvin are a analogue lo-fi pop duo from Athens Greece, on their first
mini
UK tour. They are well know for their very impressive stage appearance which
includes various costumes and party tricks. They are also known for their hard
to
find fantastic DIY jewel case cdrs that they give away for free in every gig.
Their
guest, yourboyBlair is a one man band, playing a mixture of
laptop/singer-songwriter
pop. He is a famous scene hero and vagrant in Edinburgh.
Say the band: stereo's dead. long live stereo!
- My Wet Calvin was formed during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and support the
Athens 2004+ campaign for the salvation of this city after the games. Leon and
Ar
Ar, formery potential guitar heroes, aim to overcome their technological
ignorance
in order to produce digitally processed music. As a result, an analog-like vibe
without retro or futuristic angles is born. MwC give out their cds (usually for
free) every time they perform live, carefully packed in a sense of a
want-to-have
object. “My Greatest Hits” was their debut free-cd (dec/2004) while “Have A
Tangerine!” was served during their Lali Puna support appearance (apr/2005).
Brand
new "Hercut" appeared on their recent show at Gagarin 205.

3: New quarterly residency at The Caves under the NEW CLUB banner 'Dfrnt
Trouble'
THE CAVES, NIDDRY STREET SOUTH, EDINBURGH
Dfrnt Trouble - Triptych Special
FRIDAY 27th APRIL
THE CAVES

£7 (tickets available + booking fee in advance from Ripping, Ticketweb and
Tickets
Scotland), 11pm - 3am,
Venue: www.thecaves.eu / thecavesedinburgh@... / 0131 557 8989

Background:
- Innovative London punk-funk quartet Spektrum were originally booked to play
live
at Dfrnt Drum (the monthly mid-weekly post-punk/alt-pop/indie-disco session
Trouble’s resident DJ, Hobbes, promoted at Cabaret Voltaire and Ego between May
2003
and December 2004 with fellow 80s indie veteran Bob Cairns), in early May 2003.
But
the band were forced to cancel that show at the last minute and have been on the
club’s wish-list ever since. How fitting, then, that we should finally see these
future popstrels perform under the aegis of Dfrnt Trouble, as this special in
association with the Triptych festival sees the night launch a brand new,
quarterly
residency at The Caves.
Dfrnt Trouble?
- We’ve been looking for a more regular outlet for Dfrnt Trouble since we
started
promoting a series of nights under this banner at Cabaret Voltaire early last
year
(not to mention the numerous nights when Dfrnt Drum filled the back room,
offering
an indie disco alternative to Trouble’s more soul/dance-oriented fare in the
main
room at the Cab). Dfrnt Drum pre-empted the current obsession with guitars
blended
with computer chips on the dance floor by a few years. Coincidentally, so did
Spektrum.
Spektrum:
- Imagine a singer with Grace Jones’s style, Siouxsie Sioux or Ari Up’s spirit
and
Kelis’s sass and soul fronting the rhythm section from Talking Heads, who have
got
the groove locked down tight, while Timbaland makes it all sound totally poppin’
from the engineering booth. In other words – that’s right – PURE GENIUS!
- It’s eighteen months since their Edinburgh debut at Optimo and six months
since
superb second album Fun At The Gymkhana Club (Non Stop) emerged (a remix album,
Death Of The Gymkhana Club, is out in September), so high time for a return from
one
of London's most buzzing live acts.
- With ace hit single Kinda New – a worldwide club smash following THAT remix by
German boys Tiefschwarz (Playhouse) and now scheduled for re-release by the
Ministry
Of Sound label on June 4th – also bound to make an appearance in the group’s
set, it
seems guaranteed the place will veritably ignite like a bush fire in the
Australian
desert when Lola, Teia and Isaac strut their stuff on stage. What an ACE way to
launch our new residency at The Caves…
- Some Spektrum Trivia: Teia and Isaac are both from down under (New Zealand, if
my
my memory serves me well…) while ace producer Gabriel Olegavich family heritage
includes a famous Russian composer. Gabriel was also the studio boffin behind
various grime anthems, not least Lady Sovereign’s massive Random (a bona fide
Trouble hit in 2004-5). We don’t currently have any trival knowledge about
singer
Lola Olifasoye in our arsenal, but we suspect she might be worth her weight in
gold!
