Given the Viking’s severed roots in the north-west, Trouble support
DJ/illustrator
Ingram’s continuing home there and regular Troublesome trips to the Southport
Weekender, it was only right we developed some sort of alliance with the
soul-boys
and tech-girls of the North of England. This month we ask the Liverpool’s
Bommynite
Troublemakers (who run regular nights at the city’s notorious Dragon* hot-spot)
to
don curly wigs, shell suits, “come ‘ed” and explain why Liverpool will be
European
City of Culture 2008. “Is it the banging club scene !” we wonder. “Eh, eh,
calm
down, calm down! Just kidding!!” See below for more info on them.

And, with an abundance of vital new house and electro(nic) dance music out just
now,
we invite Fever and Taste resident Martin Valentine to stoke the fire in our
back
room alongside regular sidekick Steven Wanless.

*According to our Scouse spy, The Dragon is one of the most buzzing, wee,
late-night
joints in Liverpool and home to regular after-hours affairs, so it looks very
much
like Trouble will be going back to its roots – and in more ways than one… He's
requested that we bring 'loads of rave tunes' when we head down there and we'll
of
course be all too happy to oblige. We're expecting equally po-face-free
entertainment from Bommynite when they come to Trouble.

Get the bleeps out, there’s a proper rave happening down at the Cab. ‘Gonna make
you
sweat ‘til you bleed’ etc.

BIOGS

Nick The Greek aka Nick Street (Bommynite Music/Brazilica)

DJ with 19 years experience, back in the 80s Nick started off his craving for
music
at 14 with the Chicago house groove thang that was going on. So with a passion
for
music and a record collection to suite, Nick like most of the coolest djs
started
with a mobile disco, as he found that getting in clubs was hard due to looking
so
bloody young. After hanging around the record shops in Norwich (just like a
vinyl
junkie), he developed contacts, which was the turning point. This progression
from
mobile disco led onto djing in the 90s at raves and clubs in and around East
Anglia
to the South East. In 2000 while Nick was studying for a Law degree in
Sheffield, he
entered a dj competition at the home of Gratecrasher and was lucky enough to
win.
He warmed up for Gatecrasher resident Matt Hardwick on several occasions in the
main
room and did he rock the crowd!! In 2002 Nick moved to Liverpool and as they
say
'the rest is history'.

Main musical influences – House music, Drum & Bass, Techno, Disco, Rare Groove,
Miles Davis, Nicola Conte, Fela Kuti, Kerri Chandler, M.A.W, Colin Salmon,
Japanese
Jazz, Afro Beat and all things Latin.

Technical inspiration – Masters at Work, C & C Music Factory, Roger Sanchez, DJ
Sneak, Jeff Mills, Def Mix Crew, Carl Cox, Grooverider, SL2, Mark Bell aka
Blakkat,
DJ Cozzie, Keith Thompson, Joe Clausell, Frankie Feliciano, Josh Wink, Ian
Greenwood, and Nicholas Addo Nettey.

Prior to establishing Bommynite Music, Nick worked as a buyer for X-Fade Records
(Liverpool) from January 2003 – February 2005.

Nick covers dance music events for BBC Liverpool Online
(www.bbc.co.uk/liverpool)
and has interviewed Louie Vega, Danny Krivit, Steve Spacek, Fergie, Southport
Weekender and many others.

Alex 'Slippers' Sweeney (Bommynite Music/Footworks)

Alex Sweeney aka alex vest aka ali bongo aka bongovision aka Alex 'slippers'
Sweeney...the list goes on, DJing for 9 years (since 16). When Alex was based in
Southport the home of the Weekender, he had plenty of inspiration with
world-class
artists arriving in his back garden twice a year. Closely watching other talent
around him, including Chibuku residents Phil Charnock and sister Sarah Sweeney,
he
went from strength to strength gaining musical knowledge, embracing new skills
and
finding inspiration from original djs such as Danny Krivit, "Little" Louie Vega
and
François K.. a love for soul music grew and helped him develop his own style of
dj-ing and to look into many genres of music which incorporate the soul edge.

Since moving to Liverpool over 3 year ago, he has locally supported Mr Scruff,
Giles
Peterson, Phil Asher, Layo & Bushwacka and Roni Size among others, featured at
The
Magnet boat party on the River Mersey, plus Sick Trumpet and Chibuku's 'let off
steam' steam train party, which travelled through North Wales. He has also
played
The Faversham (leeds), Lincoln Lounge and Battersea Park (london), City bar
(chester)..... he djs because “it's expressive and a good outlet”. He also hopes
in
a way he has inspired the listeners the way he was inspired when he began his
journey into music. Alex also works for Bommynite Music as an assistant manager,
in
sales, djing etc.

Strangely Alex doesn't own a pair of decks which is probably why everytime he
plays
its like watching a little kiddy that's deeply hypnotized by the wheels going
round...

Emkai a.k.a Mark Heaslip (Bommynite Music/Footwork)

Emkai was introduced to underground music in 1991. He was handed an unlabelled
cassette tape which he thought was blank, however, this tape would prove to
completely change Emkai’s musical direction. On the tape was a mix from one of
the
North’s most popular underground…yet overground… radio shows, the “Hardcore
House
Hour” with Stu Allen on Key 103. At age 14, this tape proved to be the starting
point of a long, and still continuing musical journey, which Emkai doubts will
ever
end.

DJ experience came in many places, mainly in Birmingham whilst studying at
university, from house parties, bars, clubs, even down to the Student Union
Following moving back home after a small stint in Leeds, alongside Alex Sweeney,
Sarah Sweeney and Phil Charnock he became a resident at the coolest bar in
Southport, Bar Flava.

He has since followed his previous music compadres to Liverpool, and has began a
new
journey to inject the soul back into the Liverpool house scene which began with
his
own night “Release” at Dragon bar, the occasional “New York Sessions” night
alongside Nick The Greek, the first featuring Keith Thompson (Break 4 Love).
From
this partnership Emkai has also become part of the Bommynite crew as a resident
DJ,
and has other plans to run bigger events to bring the soulful sound to more
Liverpool ears.

Trouble DJs & MC Ratty B – Biog (2007)

Resident team and brains behind the only Scottish club nominated two years on
the
trot for Best UK Club Night in Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Music Awards on BBC
Radio
1, and Runners-Up in December 2005, the Trouble DJs & MC Ratty B are a unique
proposition in today’s hackneyed club climate.

Widely regarded as the rising stars of Britain’s leftfield club scene, the
Trouble
DJs don’t have much truck with the ‘music policies’ of the British clubs of
yesteryawn and really just like to play the best of everything and anything they
can
lay their grubby mitts on. Provided it will keep people moving on the dance
floor,
they’re happy to drop anything from old soul, p-funk, electro, hip hop, boogie
and
rare groove to the freshest nuggets from the global disco, house, techno,
electro,
broken beat, drum n bass, grime and hip hop scenes. Basically this means dance
music
of black origin. However, that’s not to say they won’t play a classic piece of
Talking Heads, The Police, Blondie, Bowie or the latest indie-disco banger, say,
to
spice things up. Trouble is about having a good party first and foremost and if
the
record’s got a decent beat, a good tune and enough soul coursing through its
grooves, the Trouble crew will probably be into it.

As stylish, eccentric and original as the Trouble DJs’ selections, MC Ratty B
adds
his own unique flair to the mix. Don’t be fooled by the image, though (or rather
do
be fooled – that’s part of the fun!). After years of honing his skills at jungle
and
drum n bass clubs, this floppy-haired, bespectacled young squire can rhyme and
flow
like the rudest of bad bwoys from Britain’s inner cities, as well as singing in
key,
bringing something genuinely distinctive to the table and ensuring the Trouble
crew
stand out even more.

With an all-singing, all-dancing web site enticing you to get into Trouble, this
crew’s freestyle party gospel is currently being preached further and wider than
ever before. And, wherever they go, people are just lapping up the Trouble DJs &
MC
Ratty B. How much longer can they remain a best-kept secret

Well-established players on the club scene, the Trouble DJs currently hold down
residencies throughout the Scottish capital, including monthly at Cabaret
Voltaire
(Trouble, Fridays), a new quarterly night at the Caves (Dfrnt Trouble, Fridays)
and
weekly spots at the Opal Lounge (Rope, Mondays - Hobbes & DC), Lulu (Tuesdays -
Hobbes & Dava), Assembly (Fridays - Trouble DJs & friends) and the Jazz Bar
(Saturday Night Fish Fry - Erik d'Viking & Astroboy).

live

...
the 'bombers can expect another homely reception for the luscious party
platters"
The List, September 2005.

"...a great example of a club night that was born out of a love of music, not a
desire to make money…. Having spent the last couple of years pushing the music
forward rather than seeking a profit, let's hope Trouble gets its reward..." The
Edinburgh Evening News, November 2004.

4: Sat Fish Fry 28th July, touring band Kokolo Jazz Bar - Edinburgh
- Supplementary Fish Fry Press Release

Saturday Night Fish Fry
11pm 3am, The Jazz Bar, 1a Chambers Street, Edinburgh
3 B4 11.30pm / 5 after / Kokolo advance tickets at 4 + b.f. available from
Ripping Records, The Jazz Bar & Ticketweb.co.uk

Sat 18th August 2007
On Stage:Touring band Kokolo (Freestyle Records) + DJ Astroboy

"We ve got our own thing", states matter-of-factly Ray Lugo, leader of New York
City
powerhouse KOKOLO. Based on the spiky and hyper-funky grooves found in the group
s
latest album, "Love International", it would be difficult to argue with the man.

Few groups in today s global Afro scene generate as much attention and
excitement as
they do debate and criticism as KOKOLO. "It s the result of going against
conditioned expectations", expands Lugo. "People are used to expecting the
familiar,
but I m doing my thing in my time. This is music that comes from my heart,
humble
music for the whole world. " KOKOLO s ever-growing international appeal (to
date,
the band has performed in over 14 countries) appears to lend weight to Lugo s
words.

A former punk rocker that grew disenchanted with the promise held by that genre,
Lugo formed KOKOLO in 2001 in the Big Apple s Chinatown district, along with
long
time cohort Chris Morrow. He took the name from Spanish Harlem slang used to
refer
to devout fans of afro music. From the outset, the duo sought to carve a path of
their own. There may be better afrobeat, funk, latin or polka groups around but
we
were going to be the best KOKOLO in the world . Within weeks of forming the
group,
they recorded their urgent Fuss and Fight debut and soon found themselves
playing
to receptive audiences both at home and abroad.

Their second album, More Consideration , further expanded their audience and
afforded the band performances in a score of new countries and on some of the
world
s premier stages, such as The Montreal Jazz, Glastonbury Festivals and many
others,
where they shared the spotlight with acts ranging from Gilles Peterson, Roots
Manuva, Taj Mahal and Issac Hayes to Zap Mama, Chic and Roy Ayers.

During this time, their discography grew exponentially as well, giving them the
opportunity to reach new audiences through a number of releases that also
feature
acts such as Zero 7, Femi Kuti, Masters At work, Ladysmith Black Mambaso,
Quantic
Soul Orchestra, U-Roy, Tony Allen, Afro Celt Sound System, Jazztronik and many
others.

KOKOLO s reputation for mounting an explosive live show is the reason they
continue
to rack up frequent flyer miles year after year. No one is expected to be a
disciple of afrobeat in this band just come as you are . Darren Lipper loves
his
hard rock, Casey Howard is a Jazz and Country music head, Eladio Gonzalez is Mr.
Salsa personified, Chris loves his Zappa, John Turner is on the experimental
side of
the dial, Ando Kal lives for Reggae and lately, I ve been getting into lots of
classical music, actually , says Lugo, These guys have a lot of soul and
together
we bring our own experiences to the table. That s what makes us unique onstage .

On Love International , the group s third studio album released on Adrian
Gibson s
Freestyle imprint, KOKOLO astutely combines an intoxicating blend of afrobeat,
funk,
latin, hip hop and jazz elements into a sound that is at the same time
thoroughly
familiar yet remarkably fresh and intriguing. On tracks like the muscular Our
Own
Thing they spell out in no uncertain terms where they stand on the matter, on
the
brilliant cover of The Clash s The Magnificent Seven they masterfully inject
more
fire into a song that was burning to begin with, musical worlds collide on the
irresistible The Way Up , and we get transported to the motherland on the
hypnotic
Let Compassion Be Your Fashion . The Lyrics, half-sung, half-scatted in English,
Spanish and even Portuguese, wiz by like sparks after an explosion at a
firecracker
factory. Yes, this is in fact, something new and exciting.

Lugo s ideology draws more from humanist philosophy than from conventional
political
ideas of right and wrong. Billions of people today are manipulated via empty
political slogans and organized religion , he continues, Only through changing
how
we educate future generations can we begin to move the human experience towards
a
universal spirit of brotherhood the eradication of fear.

The socially conscious aspect of the group is reinforced through their
consistent
participation in a variety of projects and benefit concerts for causes ranging
from
the environment, to the Darfur Crisis, youth empowerment groups, and urban
development organizations. It s not about ego or rock-star clich it s about the
luxury that is to be alive and have the opportunity of bringing a positive
message
to people.

The future looks bright for KOKOLO. For the moment, expectations seem to be the
least of their concerns. - Malcom Traficant

5: Sat Fish Fry 18th August, Guest DJ Red Rack'em - Edinburgh
- Supplementary Fish Fry Press Release

Saturday Night Fish Fry
11pm - 3am, The Jazz Bar, 1a Chambers Street, Edinburgh
Free B4 11.30pm / £5 after / No advance tickets available

Sat 18th August 2007
On Stage:Guest DJ Red Rack 'em (Stealth, Nottingham) + Gecko 3 LIVE
Red Rack'em burst onto the scene in October 2004 with their remake of 'I'm Not
Feeling You' by Yvette Michelle which had DJs wetting their pants everywhere -
Fat
City described it as "The best remake in recent memory". Since then they've
'worked'
with Missy, Busta, Guru, Tweet, Ty, Nas and many more on their voyage of audio
plunder. There has been 5 chapters of The Smugglers Inn series so far and they
have
been awarded record of the week at both Piccadilly and Fat City several times
for
different titles. The label has had continued support from the likes of the
Nextmen,
Kid Sublime, Yam Who, Diesler, Swag and the Unabombers. The disco re-edit sister
label Rack'em Up has been a similiar success story with DJ support from the
Idjut
Boys, Jazztronik, Rune Lindbaek, Unabombers and even some chap called Carl Craig

As a DJ, Rack'em has over 12 years experience and has always been a keen
contributor
to whatever UK city he resided in at the time - Hip hop, jazz and funk in
Edinburgh
(95-97), Drum and Bass and Detroit House in Bristol and Liverpool (97-99) and
laterally Broken Beat, Disco, more Hip Hop and genuine eclecticism in
Nottingham,
his current home. Well for his genre busting sets, Rack'em is able to play
mental
dubstep at local 'big club' Stealth on a friday night, then play a loads of
leftfield detroit and broken in award winning cocktail bar Chino Latino on a
Saturday night. Then play loads of wacked out, wonky electronic at the Broadway
Arts
Cinema on a Sunday night. This diversity is the key to Rack'em's musical ethos -
he
likes a lot of different music and this is highlighted by his DJ sets.

Out of town it's a similar story. Hip hop sets at Native in Bristol, upfront
broken
pressure at Best Kept Secret at Shoreditch Medicine Bar and wonky warm up sets
at
international festivals for local band Skinny Sumo. The eclectic route has
worked
also worked overseas with gigs in Sarajevo, Lisbon and regular visits to
Budapest to
play with the IKZ/Lick The Click crew supporting the likes of Modeslektor and
Chris
Carter.

2007 has already been a busy year for Red Rack'em - with an EP on Steve Koteys
Bear
Funk (home to the norwegians, idjuts, mudd etc) in the bag, an EP forthcoming on
Solid States Product of Society records, Dubstep remix work for Tubbs on
Exceptional
- with Dallas from Fat Freddys Drop on vocals , remixes for Ed Spaceks Earlyman
project and the forthcoming dubstep project D-Nile...

"Genius" - Dom Servini, Straight No Chaser
"The Captain" Yam Who, Uptown Safari
"No Wonder the like of the Idjut Boys and the Unabombers are fans....."

Gecko 3
Gecko 3 are an awesome Edinburgh trio and firm Fish Fry favourites. They have
performed at Ronnie Scott's jazz club and London's Kashmir Klub as KT Tunstall's
backing band (They also sang backing vocals on her Mercury nominated album 'Eye
to
the Telescope').

and
they know it" Daily Record
