FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BORN TO BE WIDE EDINBURGH - ANNOUNCES MUSIC MANAGER SEMINAR on Thursday 1 May
Released 24 April 2008
Scotland’s leading and only music scene social night, Born To Be Wide, is set to host a seminar featuring some of the country’s top music managers on Thursdasy 1 May. The move follows the success of a talk given by former PIL, Killing Joke and NIN drummer Martin Atkins, earlier this month.
“We had overwhelmingly good feedback from people attending the Martin Atkins lecture and so decided we should continue to host seminars prior to the DJ slots,” says Born To Be Wide co-organiser, Olaf Furniss.
He adds that the topic was chosen after numerous bands and budding managers had asked him for information. Participating in the seminar will be Cara Anderson [Theatre Fall], Dee Bahl [Biffy Clyro], Bruce Finlay [Aberfeldy, Simple Minds] and Francis Macdonald [Camera Obscura, Attic Lights].
The panel will provide an overview of what managers and artists should expect from each other, as well as dealing with legal agreements and how to adapt to the changing face of the music industry.
“We invited a diverse range of managers based in Scotland so that we can cover the broadest range of experiences,” says Furniss. “Having such excellent people come together is very rare and normally only takes place at music industry conferences.”
Following the seminar, both Bahl and Anderson will play their favourite records. The self indulgent DJ line up will be completed by SonyBMG scout Sharona Stephen and Dazed and Confused editor, Rod Stanley.
“Dazed and Confused was the first publication in the UK to write about Born To Be Wide and it is great that Rod is coming up to self-indulge,” says Furniss. “Although I never ask what guests are going to play, I know that Rod’s taste is rather eclectic and I’m sure he is going to pull some excellent surprises out of the bag.”

Born To Be Wide was launched in February 2004 to provide a focal point for Edinburgh’s music scene and allow bands, promoters, journalists, record labels, etc to meet in an informal setting. The monthly social club invites people from music and the arts to play their favourite records for an hour, with guests encouraged to be completely self-indulgent.
Past DJs have included members of Teenage Fanclub, Idlewild, The Fire Engines, Saint Jude’s Infirmary, Belle & Sebastian, The Go Betweens, The BetaBand, Attic Lights and the Fence Collective. Moreover, Vic Galloway, comedian Craig Hill, footballer-turned broadcaster Pat Nevin and numerous muscic/arts writers have also graced the decks at “the i-pod of the local music scene.” Guests are invited to play whatever records they like, as long as they are not by The Smiths/Morrissey or Joy Division.
Born To Be Wide has been the focus of a two-page feature in Dazed and Confused, and has been named NME Club Of The Week.
