FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
26 June 2008
Leading Scottish music scene social night, Born To Be Wide, is teaming up with the Musicians’ Union to present its latest seminar, Unveiling The Mind Of A Music Journalist.
The free event, which takes place on from 7.30-9pm at Edinburgh’s Voodoo Rooms on July 3, will feature some of Scotland’s most influential scribes including Mark Robertson [The List], Gary Flockhart [Evening News], Stuart McHugh [Is This Music/Jockrock] and ubiquitous freelancer, David Pollock [Mix Mag, The List, Daily Record, Sunday Mail].
Its aim will be to explain what motivates editorial decisions, as well as providing an insight into what the job of music journalist involves and the best ways of getting coverage.
“I’m delighted that we have such a great range of panelists who all have amazing track records when it comes to supporting Scottish music,” says Born To Be Wide co-organiser Olaf Furniss, who will be chairing the discussion and incorporating his experience writing for music-industry titles including Music Week, Audience, Record Of The Day and Billboard.
“It’s fantastic that the Musicians’ Union in Scotland is co-promoting the event and we hope to be able to make a small contribution to the service it provides. This seminar is a must for bands, managers, promoters and anyone else who has ever wondered how to get press attention.”
Jen Hunter, Musicians’ Union Regional Officer for Scotland adds:
“A significant part of our work is about providing useful information to our members, and the panels offered by Born To Be Wide are fantastic because they mean the musicians are getting the knowledge first hand from people involved in the industry.”
Following the discussion panel, the night will continue its long-standing commitment to random music, with guest DJs playing their favourite records. The line up features Jen Hunter, Edinburgh band Broken Records and literary pioneer and Rebel Inc founder, Kevin Williamson.

NOTES TO EDITOR
Born To Be Wide was launched in February 2004 to provide a focal point for Edinburgh’s music scene and allow bands, promoters, journalists, record labels, etc to meet in an informal setting. The free monthly social club invites people from music and the arts to play their favourite records for an hour, with guests encouraged to be completely self-indulgent. Since its move to Edinburgh’s Voodoo Rooms in April, the night has been preceded by a seminar.
Past guest DJs have included members of Teenage Fanclub, Idlewild, The Fire Engines, Saint Jude’s Infirmary, Belle & Sebastian, The Go Betweens, The BetaBand, Attic Lights and the Fence Collective. Moreover, Vic Galloway, comedian Craig Hill, footballer-turned broadcaster Pat Nevin and numerous music/arts writers have also graced the decks at “the i-pod of the local music scene.” Guests are invited to play whatever records they like.
Born To Be Wide has been the focus of a two-page feature in Dazed and Confused, and has been named NME Club Of The Week.
