Hobbes bags XFM / DJ Mag accolade in Eddy Temple-Morris competition

Hobbes
, one half of Edinburgh's Trouble DJs duo (alongside Erik d'Viking), has won a competition in DJ Magazine for a slot on Eddy Temple Morris's Dance Rocks stage at this weekend's Secret Garden Party near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

Some one and a half dozen DJs answered the questions posted by Temple Morris on his myspace blog, after announcing the competition in the latest edition of specialist dance music guide DJ Magazine.  DJs were asked to name the three tracks they would choose to play at the start, middle and end of a set, warming up the Dance Rocks stage this weekend. Hobbes's winning response was Santogold's LES Artistes, MGMT's Electric Feel, Justice Remix and David Bowie's evergreen Ashes To Ashes

Hobbes's previous DJing achievements include touring China as support act for Bugz In The Attic live and DJ duo The Nextmen, playing clubs in Poland, France, Germany and Belgium, as well as bagging spots at award-winning festivals Bestival (2006 & 2007), The Big Chill (2005) and at this year's T In the Park (on Cabaret Voltaire's Boombus).  In the Scottish capital, his Trouble residency (bi-monthly at Cabaret Voltaire) recently celebrated its sixth anniversary, was twice nominated for Gilles Peterson's Club of The Year in his Worldwide Awards on Radio 1, as well as being the first club in Edinburgh/Scotland/the UK to host many an up-and-coming DJ/producer and live act.  See here for more info on Trouble's colourful and broad-reaching history.

As well as Trouble, Hobbes is currently holding down residencies all over Edinburgh (Mondays - Tomorrow People at the GRV, Tuesdays - Synthetic Love at Lulu, Thursdays - Limbo at The Voodoo Rooms, plus New Idols, monthly Sundays at Cabaret Voltaire), not to mention the new Slabs Of The Tabernacle monthly at the Twisted Wheel in Glasgow.

The Secret Garden Party, which boasts a headline appearance from living legend Grace Jones has only been on the go for a few years but is fast becoming the talk of the festival circuit.  More info hereTemple Morris hosts The Remix radio show on XFM and is also one half of production outfit the Losers.  More info here

TROUBLE, FRI 1st AUGUST: MO' BASS SPECIAL at CABARET VOLTAIRE with PIRATE SOUND SYSTEM (DJ SET) + HOBBES & ERIK D'VIKING (TROUBLE DJs)

ABOUT:

Our special guests for this month's Trouble were discovered in the most modern of ways: on an internet blog, searching for new music.  Pirate Sound System are so fresh, they have hardly even been signed yet, although on current evidence that looks set to change very soon.  It turns out MIA / Santogold producer Diplo is also a fan and recent remixes for the likes of 'nu rave' indie noise-mongers Hadouken (Atlantic), grime star Wiley (Atlantic), Brazilian baile funk popstrels Bonde do Role and maverick old rave veteran Si Begg, not to mention a few of their own productions that have leaked out, prompted Trouble DJs' Hobbes to send a myspace message to Pirate Sound System bass camp in the Big Smoke.  Apparently this message got lost in the cyber ether – how very typical – but it rapidly transpired that Trouble cohort Giles Walker in Aberdeen (Electrique Boutique, Hush Hush/Snafu), similarly impressed by some of the aforementioned studio works, had also recently booked Pirate Sound System for a date at his Hush Hush night (pipping Trouble to the post with the Scottish debut by a mere week, people).  Following a phone call between Trouble HQ and Giles, he sent the Pirates his own message and within a matter of a few days, one email and a couple of phone calls, the headliner for August's Trouble was sown up - no screwing around with wide-boy agents, just plain ol' fashioned chat between like-minded souls: 'we like your style, why don't you come party with us?' Bingo.  Job's a good un, Bob's your uncle and Fanny is, indeed, your aunt.

PIRATE SOUND SYSTEM BIOG:

Pirate Soundsystem's Josh Console had this to say, biographically-speaking:

We talked about some of our history and stuff in this interview: http://electriqueboutique.blogspot.com/2008/02/piracy-funds-terrorism.html

"Release wise, we were asked by Diplo to take part in Mad Decent's first remix release and that started the whole musical thing. Since then, we've been approached by many artists (discography on myspace page) and we're proud of everyone we have remixed. They are all quality artists who we felt we wanted to remix, rather than just a remix by numbers to cram another genre into the promo disc.

UPCOMING THINGS:
Carvadeya & Jeeday Jawz - She Loves Me (Pirate Soundsystem remix)
*Upcoming artists with major label interest
Si Begg - Big Boy DJ (Pirate Soundsystem tropical remix)
1992 rave piano collaborations Jack Beats coming up, as well as an EP release on Cutlass Supreme's heavy bass label WIDE.

Also, here's a mix we did for Xfm in Scotland: http://www.zshare.net/audio/1445543147c08093 "

TROUBLE, we don't really give a d*mn if you've heard of Pirate Sound System yet or not, coz we think they're the sh*t.
