PRESS RELEASE :: Thursday 20 March
Scotland’s leading musicbusiness scene social night, Born To Be Wide, is to mark its move to Edinburgh’s Voodoo Rooms on April 3 with a special talk and advice session with industry veteran Martin Atkins.
In a career which includes drumming for PIL, Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails and industrial supergroup Pigface, Atkins’ current activities include producing in his Chicago studio, running the Invisible record label and lecturing on touring.
He recently published the book Tour Smart, a comprehensive guide to taking to the road, which features contributions from dozens of people connected to the business, ranging from Henry Rollins to supergroupie Cynthia Plastercaster.
Atkins, who recently gave a seminar at SXSW in Texas, is a walking compendium of advice and tour tales. After his talk will take to the decks to play his favourite records.
“It’s great to be able to celebrate Born To Be Wide’s move with such a distinguished guest,” says the night’s co-organiser Olaf Furniss. “We are also thrilled to be able to offer a seminar for the first time and hope to invite other speakers in the future.”
Commenting on his forthcoming seminar, Atkins adds that the aim is to give acts a comprehensive overview of the best way to approach touring and playing live.
"This is valuable information that will help any band get further than they are right now and help them change their own future,” he says. “And it's funny as fuck."
Like Born To Be Wide, the seminar will be free, but those wishing to attend are requested to send their name to borntobe_wide@... to guarantee a place.
In addition to Atkins, guest DJs will include The Skinny’s music editor Dave Kerr and members of Lewis rock band Our Lunar Activites, whose song Little Finger was recently Track Of The Month in the BTBW column published in The Scotsman http://tinyurl.com/3538k8
“Since its launch two years ago The Skinny has provided an invaluable boost to the music and arts scene in central Scotland,” says Furniss. “And we are thrilled that after spending a big chunk of last year recording in the US, the guys from Our Lunar Activities will now be calling in to self indulge.”
The move to Edinburgh’s Voodoo Rooms will see Born To Be Wide marks a return to a live-music venue, with Born To Be Wide taking place in the Speakeasy room [not to be confused with the latest addition to Cabaret Voltaire].
“Our friends run the fantastic live music night Limbo every Thursday in the main room, which provides an additional opportunity for musicians to meet promoters, and also helps us spot potential guests,” says Furniss.
“We would like to thank Wendy and Lou at The Street for making BTBW possible for the past three years. Without them we would have given up long ago!”

NOTE TO EDITORS
Born To Be Wide was launched in February 2004 to provide a focal point for Edinburgh’s music scene and allow bands, promoters, journalists, record labels, etc to meet in an informal setting. The monthly social club invites people from music and the arts to play their favourite records for an hour, with guests encouraged to be completely self-indulgent.
Past guests have included members of Teenage Fanclub, Idlewild, The Fire Engines, Saint Jude’s Infirmary, Belle & Sebastian, The Go Betweens, The BetaBand, Attic Lights and the Fence Collective. Moreover, Vic Galloway, comedian Craig Hill, footballer-turned broadcaster Pat Nevin and numerous muscic/arts writers have also graced the decks at “the i-pod of the local music scene.” Guests are invited to play whatever records they like, as long as they are not by The Smiths/Morrissey or Joy Division.
Born To Be Wide has been the focus of a two-page feature in Dazed and Confused, and has been named NME Club Of The Week.
