FESTIVAL FRINGE @ THE DRILL HALL
In a first-time-ever partnership with Dance Base, the
Out of the Blue Drill Hall is opening up its doors this August under the fairly
self-explanatory title of Dance Base 2 @ The Out of the Blue. Dance
Base , Scotland 's
National Centre for Dance, is located in the Grassmarket in central
Edinburgh and is already a
well-established Fringe venue. It is expanding operations this year to fill two
whole venues with exceptional dance shows.
We have plenty of space down here at the Drill Hall
and the three very special shows we are hosting certainly take advantage.
Fidget Feet, an aerial dance company from
Ireland , will be swinging from the
rafters of the Drill Hall, in the kind of show which really will be something
to write home about! In addition, Fidget Feet will also be running workshops so
you can try out the moves for yourself. Herald Angel winning choreographer,
Darren Johnston, who recently completed a residency at the famous Roundhouse in
London , while
leaving gravity alone, will be breaking other boundaries in a dance show
involving projection and illusion.
Creative Scotland Award winner, Claire Cunningham,
features as part of the Made In Scotland thread of this year’s Fringe.
This is a brand new initiative designed to highlight and showcase a wide range
of innovative theatre and dance, all with distinctively Caledonian roots.
Cunningham’s show draws on a great deal of healthy Scottish humour and
has left audiences grinning with delight.

RAW mixes
contemporary dance and aerial skills using ropes, harnesses and poles. In a hot
and sexy club-land, the DJ slips into a shamanic counterpart that is taken over
by the group, providing a deep communication that has unexpected effects on
everyone. They slide into an inner, darker world where the mind exerts its own
dynamic over the dancers and their relationships. Is it a fun loving club or
are we in a social prison? Why do we go out? Is it to transcend our ordinary
lives, to go beyond ourselves, to forget the rules and to fly without ropes?

Double bill from award-winning dancer/choreographer
Claire Cunningham showcasing her exceptional technique, impressive power and
wonderfully direct Scottish humour. From the quiet, sculptural
Mobile , combining dance,
text and aerial work, to the uplifting beauty of Evolution.
Claire started aerial training in 2004, her particular
interest in this field stemming from a desire to utilise the upper body
strength created by having used crutches for the last 14 years, to investigate
her ability for free movement when uninhibited by the disabling factor of
weightbearing.
