...let me put in a good word for Jim Dodge's late '80s novel "Not Fade
Away," in which the main character (a San Francisco tow truck driver) heads out
on the road in a late '50s Cadillac that was intended as a present for the Big
Bopper. It's been a few years since I've re-read it (probably ten, actually),
but it's something of a road novel; a cross between "On the Road" and "Fear and
Loathing in Las Vegas." Unlike the other book, this one is still in print.
